My son is almost 10 months old and will not drink his formula any more. I want to switch him to whole milk. My other 2 kids were easy to switch they had no tummy problems but this one is a lot different. If I give him something new you can bet your bottom dollor he will have the runs or be constipated. Like I said I never had any problems with my other 2 children and was wondering if there is something I am suppose to do to switch him over to cows milk. He is on soy formula right now but does not have a problem with cheese or puddings so I know he is not allerigic to dairy. I know he is suppose to be on formula until he is a year but he won't drink his formula all he wants is his juice. I have tried giving his formula cold, warm and room temp. Any advice?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your advice. I decided to call my sons Doc and he said not to worry about him not taking his formula as long as he is eating good during his meals and for the next three weeks start mixing his formula and milk starting off with 1 part milk 3 parts formula. I have been doing this since yesterday and so far I have had no problems. Also just for some extra info my Doc says soy milk and anything other the whole milk is not good for a baby because they need that fat, when they turn 2 is when you can switch them to 2% or even soy. That was my docs opion anyway. Thank you again. My sons tummy is doing great!

My oldest daughter was the same way. I had to start her off on skim milk. Then went to 1%, then 2% and then whole milk. She just had to slowly adjust to the change.

Have you talked to your pediatrician about this? I am curious about this also. My daughter is on soy and about 3 1/2 weeks ago we tried giving her yougurt and about an hour later, we had to rush her to the ER. She had projectile vomiting and was white as a sheet and almost unconscious. We took her to the allergist in Houston last week and she has no allergy but is very intolerant. The allergist suggested keeping her off ALL diary until 18 months and retest.

Poor kid! Have you ever tasted formula! I would want juice instead also! :) My son did the same thing at 10 months. You know they have milk that is lactose free. I would switch him to that for a bit until his little system develops a little more.

T.,
Instead of switching him to cow's milk, try soy milk. That is the only milk I use. There is a lot of debate going on whether milk is good for children, but there are so many health benefits with soy. That is the only milk my children drink.

I would suggest taking the child to a pedi gastro. My eldest girl had issues with formula and regular milk. I recently took her to Dr. Brigman a pedi gastro in SA. She found several food allergies. Even a milk allergy. Not lactose intolerance but an actual allergy. That with the other food allergies she has had been the problem. Now, no more tummy issues. We avoid foods she is allergic to like milk, apples, peanuts. Good luck to you. I hope your baby is better soon. I know what it is like to be a worried mommy. :)

Maybe try slowly incorporating the milk into the formula, like 1 part milk to 3 parts formula, then the following week/day whatever, half and half... you get the idea. You may also want to try soy milk if he has stomach issues with regular milk. When I switched my daughter, I had no problems and haven't heard of anything special to do in order to switch them "properly." Good luck!

My son did the exact same thing at 10 months, although he refused to take any kind of milk including breast milk. I mixed formula in with his cereal in the morning until he turned one and then I talked to his pediatrician about it. He told me not to worry about the baby not taking milk. He said the necessary amount of calcium can be given in yogurt and cheese (full fat, not light yogurt or cheese). I continued to offer my son milk at every meal and now he loves it.

If he's on soy formula, I wouldn't switch him to cow's milk. There's too much stuff in there to upset his tummy regardless of sensitivities. If you go to http://notmilk.com/ there are a lot of articles on what cow's milk actually has in it and what it can cause (i.e. skin allergies, over-productive mucus glands, etc). I would switch him to soymilk. It's a lot safer and a lot healthier. My little girl is having the same problem and that's what her pediatrician recommends. Good luck.

Maybe you should try switching him to 2% or 1% milk, at least at first. It is not as thick and has less fat, but no less calcium.
