Switching Formulas

I recently started to supplement my eight month old with formula as I could no longer pump enough milk for her on the days I work. She seemed to be doing OK on the milk based formula but has recently started to have diarrhea and spit up some after she has a bottle of formula. I also noticed a rash on the back of her leg so I think she has developed an intolerance to formula based on cow's milk. (My other daughter was only breastfed until she was a year old so I never had any formula issues. Wish I could have done the same with this one as well)I think I am going to try soy milk to see if that helps but I don't know how to switch her. Can I just stop the milk based and start giving her soy or do I need to do it gradually? And if gradually do I combine the two or just slowly replace one bottle at a time? Thanks so much for any advice.

What can I do next?

I am not sure what others have done but whne I switched my son to soy as an infant I just switched it and never went back. It didn't bother him because he handled the soy so much better. I switched him back when he was older to milk based just to make sure he cuold handle it before we got to weaning to regular milk.

But, each baby is different with formula, even milk based ones. i had one breast fed baby at daycare that took Carnation Good Start while at daycare, BM at home, he did fine. I had another breast fed baby that mom couldn't keep up, he puked Good Start but kept down similac just fine. So it may be that it's just the brand of formula. I personally lie Good Start and have had 4 different babies that use it. I would probably call the doctor and find out about the rash, but some babies just tend to spit up formula. It can be so frustrating can't it?!

Since she is reacting to the milk formula I wouldn't bother with a gradual transition. There's no point in continueing subject her to something she is reacting to.

Are you sure it's the formula that is causing the rash? Normally a food allergy rash would be on face, chest and stomach. How long has she been getting formula? Diarrhea and spit up can be normal with formula because it is harder to digest, this should get better with time.

Maybe make a quick phone call to the doctor before switching formulas.

If you are worried about a cow's milk protein intolerance, you can just stop the formula you are on and switch to a soy based formula. However, many kids who react to cow's milk also react to soy milk formulas, so you may have to go as far as an elemental formula.

Well honestly, the diarrhea and spitting up are totally normal. My little one gets two bottle of formula a day because I'm not able to produce enough and has very runny poo that the doctor says is totally normal (with my daughter I wasn't able to breastfeed at all so this is all new to me). As for the rash, I'd say if she were allergic it would be on her face. Maybe you should take her in. Never know when a rash is a sign of illness. At that point you could mention to the doc about the formula. Might give you a free can of a gentler formula.

hey J., I needed to switching from the milk base formula to the soy formula for my little one also. All we did, was over a couple of days, mix the 2 together each day mixing more of the soy in untill it was all soy. It was a pretty easy transition. Sincce the switch to soy formula my little girl has been much happier.

I would ask your doctor first before switching. Also, Babys Only has a formula that is lactose-free. I would switch to that one before I would soy. I've heard bad things about soy so I would be hestitant to switch her to that. Also, the spitting up and diahhrea might just be normal as someone else had said since its something different in her system. Have you every tried Chiropractors? They ahve done WONDERS for my children and I highly recommend them!

Since it's a supplement anyway, I'd just switch her. I switched my son to soy formula and he got used to it pretty fast. He reacted to cow's milk-based formula as well.
