Hello
I was wondering if any of you moms knows about a good swimming school that offers mommy and me lessons in the Lakewood/Long beach area.

What can I do next?

Hi L.,
I am in the Lakewood/Long Beach area as well. We are going to go to Mayfair Park (on the corner of South St. and Clark) for mommy and me swim lessons. They have a really great program and they also do swim lessons for older children as well. I know several moms who have said nothing but wonderful things about Mayfair.
Maybe we'll see you!

For swimming the Belmount Pool has lessons and it is indoors. During the summer LBCC has a program that is great. For other activitites check out Long Beach or Lakewood park and rec they offer lots of classes that are fun. There is a classes the is called baby dance and my daughter loves it. You may want to join LB littles ones is a yahoo group and the moms and babies are always doing something and they have a lot of information to share. There is storytime at Border and the local libraries. There is a freespirit yoga on Atlantic across form Trader Joes that have classes. I go to stroller stride but it is in San Pedro. YES, there is a swimming school in Seal Beach that is worth the investment. The cost is on the expensive side, but your child will learn how to swim quicker. For the amount of money you would spend at YMCA for a ton of lessons you can wrap it up with Water Safe in 5 sesssion. We loved it!!!

this time of the year is harder because some pools are closed down. usually the YMCA or I take my kids to the Australian Swim school and they teach out of Bally's gym. the Ymca or your community center would be a good place to start. hope this helps you.

Hi L.,
I love thompson park in Bellflower...
They really are awesome!!!
Its not a swimming school but they do offer mommy and me classes in swimming and they have a ton of other programs as well... although I really do not know how many would be geared towards 9 month olds. also all their programs are very reasonably priced. it might be worth checking it out. I have 4 children and all my children have taken part in several of their programs. They have attented almost everything offered from mommy and me classes and preschool to tumbling and dance classes my two youngest are still going there for karate and baseball and basketball. If you have any questions I would be happy to help.

I am looking into that soon. Also I heard the australian swimm school is one of the best, expensive, but good. Both you can find online

I live in long beach as well and stay home with my daughter. If you are interested we can meet and get our girls energy out together. Let me know

Check out www.watersafe.com. They are internationally recognized and have 6 locations, including one in Long Beach (Traffic Circle area). They offer swimming lessons to people aged 10 days to adult.

I hope this helps. Best of luck to you.

I have taught swimming for the past 20+ years, am a bit far for you, but even if you were next door I would tell you to just let your baby play A LOT in the bathtub. This is a familar place and you can do a ton on your own in the comfort of your home! You can also control the water temp at home where you cannot at a swim school. THIS IS KEY. Beginning swimmers (of any age) need warm water (about 90-92 degrees; even on hot days!) because it allows the learner to relax, hence concentrate on the teacher, rather than how cold they are, AND a relaxed body floats a lot easier than a tense one :) The second most important thing is to allow water to go over his/her face. I'm begging you to never buy those face shield things that "protect faces/eys from water"! The more comfortable children are with water over their face, the easier it will be to really teach them to swim and breathe in the water when they are about two-two and a half. I know this doesn't help you with an "outing" but it's easy, and your little one will get tired :)

Just one last thing, if you do this, NEVER take your eye off him/her, this included staying off the phone. If you have a cordless phone it's good to have it near in case of an emergency, but I would suggest that you don't answer it if it rings during "play time". You wouldn't answer the phone if you were in the pool either :) Better safe than sorry.

I live in downey. The YMCA on Downey Blvd has a TON of swimming classes. All ages and all swim experiences. The local high school also offered swim classes during the summer. The "Y" pool is indoors and better if you want to start during the cooler months. The City pool is outdoors.

I know that there are a lot of schools in each city around here. Gyms SOMETIMES offer classes....balley's on Lakewood does...but, that one adds up pretty fast dollar wise. I would check with the nearest City Hall for Red Cross or Parks and Recreation. And the "Y"s are usually in each town.

Good luck, i enjoyed going with my little guy. Keep in mind the outside temperature...and i suggest having a helper...entry and exit of the pool is easier with help...oh, and toys are a wonderful thing...make it like bath time. AND little swimmers are a must! they don't keep the baby from peeing...but, poo isn't as bad *grin* usually the babies seem to know not to go...but, you still have to watch.

Hello,
Give Aquatic Explorations a try, they are great instructors. I am not sure if they have a mommy and me class, but both of my children have taken lessons there as well as many of my friends children. Good Luck! By the way, they are in Los Alamitos, just off Katella.

Hi L.,

I see that no one has mentioned the JCC in Long Beach. It's on Willow just West of Bellflower. They have a wonderful, HEATED outdoor pool & they do mommy & me swim classes. I was planning on signing up for a class there with my 9 month old this Spring. You don't have to be a member to take a class there (we aren't). http://www.alpertjcc.org/

There are also mommy & me classes through the Parks & Rec dept. of Long Beach. I did the one at the Belmont pool (with my older son) which is NOT heated. With a baby or young child - this makes a huge difference! You have to jump right into somewhat cold water & they don't like it.

I did another classes with my first when he was only 1, more like the watersafe classes. You do not go in the water with your child & there is normally crying involved. If your serious about teaching your baby to swim then this would be the type of class for you. It was way too intense for us. It doesn't sound like you are looking for that kind of class. But it is pretty incredible what they can teach a baby. Check out this video moms!

Maybe we'll see you at JCC this Spring - M.

Hi L., we have had our daughter (also 9 months) in swim lessons for a few months now at a swim school up here in LA. They use what is called the "Smart Fish Method" which is a swimming but also infant survival method (they learn how to float if they fall in the pool). The method was started down in OC in the 70s by a woman who used to teach at the YMCA in Long Beach (Ginny Ferguson). Anyways, I am totally a proponent of this method, they do parent and baby classes as well as individual lessons. Here is the website for the one by you www.watersafe.com. Their main pool is in Seal Beach, but they have a satellite location in Long Beach.

If you want to know more or ask any questions about our experience feel free to message me.
