Swimmers, Do You Know of a Good Shampoo??

My daughter is doing a lot of swimming this summer and it's really effecting her hair. She has medium-long, very thick hair. It is getting very dry and feels almost sticky in places. Yuck!!! I've tried the L'Oreal kids swim and sport shampoo. It doesn't seem to do much to get rid of the chlorine. Does anyone have any swim shampoo that they get good results with?

What can I do next?

My son and daughter take swimming lessons 1x/week throughout the year except summer and we use Suave Kids Swim and Sport. I think the real key though is to get the hair wet prior to entering the pool. We don't do the other stuff like putting on conditioner prior to entering pool though. I think getting it wet seems to be enough to prevent too much absorption of the chlorine. Then we wash immediately after with the Suave.

I second the recommendation for Ultraswim. It kept my hair in great shape even back in the days when I was on two swim teams!

As a pool owner, I beg to differ with those who would get into a pool with conditioner in their hair. It adds to the work in keeping the pool up.

My littlest would sleep in the pool if I would let her! She is blonde and it bleaches out to white in the summer. I use the swimmer's shampoo that I got at Sally's. I use the shampoo and conditioner when she showers and then I use the spray in conditioner before she swims. It has taken the green out and helps with the 'sticky' feeling in my 8 year olds hair.

Good Luck!

My daughter swims alot and had her hair cut last week. The lady who cut her hair suggested using a clarifying shampoo. To put it on and put a plastic bag over it for 15 minutes and then rinse, shampoo and condition as normal. She said it is a mini version of the treatment they would do in the salon. We tried it that night and it made her hair very soft. We used the great clips clarifying shampoo but it should work with any.

My daughter is swimming at summer camp every day and we were dealing with the same issue. Her hair was turning into straw. We were told to use a clarifying shampoo. We bought the one at Great Clips and a sun/swim conditioner to go with it. It's amazing the difference after she started using it. We were told to keep using it during the summer and could go back to her usual shampoo/conditioner once she's done with daily swimming.

Hi S.....I used to teach swimming lessons and was in the pool ALOT with my very blonde hair. The only thing I found that worked had nothing to do with the actual shampoo after swimming. BEFORE she gets in the pool, have her take a shower and get her hair wet then apply a very think coat of anytype of BALSAM conditioner and DONT rinse it off. Comb it through to make sure it covers all the hair and then get in the pool. Use the cheapest Balsam conditioner you can find usually VO5 or Suave. The Balsam is really waxing and kind of coats the hair not allowing hte chlorine to get absorbed in there first. It worked like a charm for me for almost 10 years of teaching. Places like Sally Beauty supply have "better" brands of chlorine shampoo then you would find at Target.

Good luck and HAPPY swimming!

Hi S.! I second the Malibu 2000 products! It saved my hair when I was swimming! My sister has naturally platinum blond hair and chlorine almost ruined it but the Malibu products got it back to normal.
Good luck!

There used to be a shampoo called Aloe Rid by Nexxus. Also, Alternate Action is great by Matrix. My mom is a stylist and that's what we always used- we never had "green hair" (and my sister is a blond). Just used it after swimming. Can also use a spray conditioner before the pool and leave it in.

My daughter, who I like to call a fish, also loves to swim every day. Her hair was feeling pretty yucky too. I remembered that when I was a kid my mom used to put 3 heaping tablespoons of baking soda in an oversized glass & mix with lukewarm water. She would shampoo my hair, then apply the baking soda mix, rinse, then do conditioner. It works pretty well. At least it would be an inexpensive method to try.

Good luck!

I had/have long, thick hair and I remember my mom using a baking soda and tonic water mixture to help with the chlorine. Add tonic water to the baking soda to make a paste and then work it into and through her hair. (I think we would let it sit in my hair for a few minutes.) Rinse the paste out of her hair with more tonic water. I remember it really making a big difference. I think we did this about once a week. For everyday washing, I used a Paul Mitchell product, but I forget the name. (also mentioned in a previous response) Good Luck!

Hi S.- I was a competitve swimmer, and we always used Malibu 2000 hair care for swimmers. It seemed to work really well- If you put the conditioner in her hair prioir to swimming and do not rinse it out that will help! Make sure she washes her hair every day if she is swimming that much! Good luck

I am assuming you're swimming in a swimming pool. The best way to prevent dried-out hair is to avoid the chemicals that get dumped in pools. My husband works in the pool business and tells me to avoid commercial swimming pools at all costs--they are heavily chemical-ed because people do gross things in the water--YUK--you know what I'm talking about!

Keep to Minnesota's beautiful lakes and rivers! Just my opinion.
