Sweaty Toddler

My daughter is 14 months old. When she naps or falls asleep for the night, her little head sweats like crazy! When she wakes up, it's like she's just stepped out of the bath. There is always a HUGE wet spot where her head was. It's not overly warm in our house and this seems to happen no matter what she is wearing. I've tried lighter clothes at nap and bedtime, and even no clothes! However, she still sweats like crazy. It's only at nap and bedtime though. It seems to be getting worse the older she gets. She has a check-up in a few weeks, I'm just wondering if this is something I should be concerned about.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all your advice. I'm sure it's nothing because she acts fine any other time. the sweating doesn't seem to bother her at all. I will remember to bring it up to the doctor at her next check up.

All of my children have or are sweaters. My 7 year old has grown out of it for the most part. My 5 year old son is soaked when he sleeps and my 4 month old sweats too. I think is is normal but I would still speak with the doctor about it just in case.

My youngest son had a low grade fever which caused the night sweats. Eventually he grew out of it.

TAlk to your doc but i wouldn't worry, some ppl just sweat in their sleep, my son did really badly when he was young, he's 7 now and he still does some but not like before, i think it's pretty common i younger kiddos.

I have two sweat monsters in my house. Both my 6 yr and my 2yr sweat like crazy whether they are sleeping or god help us if they are playing but they are both healthy and happy. I have always dressed them cooler even in the winter. Hopefully they will out grow it.

My eldest daughter had that for nearly two years before it went away. Whenever she was tired she would heat up and sweat, we could even smell the sweat! If I held her I would get soaked! I was worried at first but she never acted as if anything was wrong. I've heard it's pretty common. She still occasionally sweats and she's nearly 3. Ask your pediatrician to reassure yourself but I'd say that it's not anything to worry about. I thought of it as a perfect way to know when she was ready for a nap!

my now two year old has always done the same, but somewhere around 18 months it seemed to get a little better....my six month old does the same, and my husband starts oozing (gross, but no other word) the second he falls asleep. i guess they got it from him.

It is always a good idea to mention it to your child's doctor.
My now 6yr. daughter, sweated like crazy too when she was a baby at nap time, bedtime and in the car seat.
If the mattress she sleeps on is vinyl/foam (which most are) put some extra cloth between that and the sheets, like a cloth diaper or REAL cotton batting.
My daughter use to sweat so much that even in winter (Ohio winters at that) I wouldn't hardly put anything on her when I took her out anywhere. I just covered the baby carrier with a blanket. Of course, my mother-in-law thought I was horrible for doing that, and I always said, well, she sweats too much to put much on her. I found out one day as I was putting her back in the van, someone was staring at me and I thought oh no, here comes another why don't you have heavy clothes on her, only this mother said don't worry, I did the same with mine for the same reason.
Now she still sweats but not nearly as much. So hopefully it will go away, but do mention something to her doctor.
Also, check the foam/vinyl mattress and put something like cotton in between her and the vinyl, and that will cut back a little on the sweating.

Hi Shaun,
I don't know about little ones, but adults can have heavy metal poisoning if they experience excessive perspiration. A hair test is how to tell with adults. I'd have to check with the person who does them whether it is an accurate guide for children. If it is this, it could lead to much more serious issues, but again, it may be something else, so don't panic, You can contact me at ____@____.com if you want more info.

One of my neices used to sweat horribly when she slept! She is now 6 years old and it is no longer a problem. It might be worth mentioning to your doctor, but it is probably something she will grow out of.

My daughter has been the same way since she was a baby (she is 3 now). She used to fall asleep on me and I would be wet where she was laying! My son isn't like that at all so I guess everybody is different.
It is how I knew if she really went to sleep or not when she took a nap! If her head is wet then I knew she slept!
I never mentioned it to her doctor because I didn't think anything of it. But let us know what you find out when you ask them about it!

I addressed this issue to my son's pediatrician last year when he was 2. He would be soaking wet when he slept, but he would also be super sweaty when playing / running around....when none of the other kids were. They tested his urine for diabetes....he didn't have it. It's not as bad now.

I would certainly talk to your doc about it, but i wouldn't worry too much. My daughter is a sweaty girl and always wakes up with a wet spot where her head was. My husband is the same way, so I really haven't worried about it much. As long as your daughter isn't displaying other signs or symptoms out of the ordinary, I wouldn't worry too much. But do bring it up to the doc; he/she will know how to asses the symptom better. Good luck and stay cool!
