My husband and I have always had great health insurance. He recently retired and now the level of coverage has diminishes, although we are still insured. We are looking for affordable supplemental coverage. I need it to cover doctor's office visits and help pay for the deductable and coinsurance and copays charged by are current insurance. Is there such policies out there that don't cost a fortune? Thanks for the input!

I just went through the paperwork and helped my parents with this. They looked at both Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois and AARP (I believe that coverage is through Aetna). In the end, they went with BCBS. There wasn't a lot of difference, but the deal seemed a bit better with BCBS.

Good luck and wishes for a happy and healthy retirement!

Hi M.,

Are you supplementing a major medical plan for people under age 65? I am not aware that this type of policy exists. I have been in the insurance industry for 19 years, and I specialize in health insurance. You either buy a major medical policy or purchase something like AFLAC. If you buy AFLAC on your own, you will pay 40% more than going through a group. These policies pay you cash, but are limited in benefits.

Most of the posts have referred to Supplemental insurance being available. However, I think they are all referring to Medicare Supplement. Of course, if you are 65, this is the way to go, and I agree that Blue Cross is very competative and a great deal. We only sell Blue Cross when it comes to Medicare Supplementsd and Drug cards.

If you and your husband are not 65 yet, what type of coverage do you have now? Is it worth replacing this policy with something more comprehensive (that offers a Dr. office copay and drug card)?

I am more than happy to help you shop. We are licensed with all the major carriers and can email quotes to you within 24 hours of obtaining basic information. Just let me know if you would like some help. Good luck, C. B.

Hi M.,

I recently helped my father-in-law with the same thing. Is your husband 65 or older? If so, does he receive Medicare benefits...Blue Cross and Blue Shield has a great Medicare Supplement insurance package. If not, you may still be able to get a secondary insurance coverage, but be careful, they can get so expensive that it might not be worth it. You might also want to ask your doctor or his front desk staff for a recommendation. They might be part of an insurance plan that if you were part of that plan they may cover more of your visits. Best of luck to you! Oh, maybe check out the AARP website for suggestions...I think that you just have to be over 50 to qualify.
