Sunscreen Suggestions for 6 Month Old

It's pool season and our 6 month old daughter LOVES being in the water. I was given a sample of a well known suncreen from a high end baby store and tried it yesterday. Well, lets just say my daughter now has a rosey glow about her after only 15 minutes out in mostly cloudly weather. Would welcome anyones suggestion of a suncreen that works for them.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for so many great suggestions and links to learn more. This was my first time on Mamasource and I was overjoyed with your support! I'm so excited I found Mamasource. After a bit of late night reading, we are going to try CA Baby first - love that the company was started by a mom and it seems to get good reviews and has less chemicals. Thanks again everyone!

I have a 12 month old, and we have used Coppertone for babies in the pink bottle. I think the SPF is 70, and it works great! We have never had any issues with it not protecting him. It is waterproof, too.

S., as a true Floridian and mom of 3, I have used every sunscreen out there. The best for my family has always been Bull Frog, it about the same price as the others but it works great. Now that my kids are older I use the spray gel (pump) and they have one with mosquito protection when you need sunscreen without the water. However when they were small I use the lotion it is very thick and has great coverage (I still use if we are going to be out for a long time). I also like the Bull Frog stick for the face, it does not bother their eyes like most of the kids sunscreens do. Good Luck, I hope this helps you.

Being very fair and having Fair children I can tell you nothing works completely. Neotrogenia has worked the best and the water babies but not the spray. Also know sunscreen goes bad when it gets old. My oldest jokes about us needing a coat of armor to go in the sun. WE now have a tent over our pool.

Burt's Bees makes a nice one and Jason. I think you can find BB at Target. Also, swim hats and sunscreen swim shirts help a lot.

Most people don't know that mainstream products, like the ones you see on TV, in the coupon section, in magazines and on in the check-out aisle at stores are LOADED with chemicals and toxins (not safe to adults, kids but especially NOT for infants!).

There is a really good website in which the group has tested and ranked different products including sunscreens - it tells you how they rank with how well they actually protect you from the harmful sun rays of different types. They also list the safety of the ingredients.

This site will help you make an informed choice when you select a sunscreen and will guide you in a safe purchase - making sure that it will actually protect your little one from burn and not expose them to harmful toxins while doing so!

Best wishes! You can look up safety of your other baby products such as shampoo, lotion, tooth/gum cleanser, hand sanitizers, etc...

I know you are going to think this response is INSANE.... but I have used it many many times when my kids were both little and still use it to this day.

Balmex!!!! it is the BEST sunscreen ever. I would cover my kids in it and rub it in completely. (they didn't have much hair, so I would cover thier heads too!) And they would spend all day in the sun at the beach, and not get any sun.

I have a 11 month old blond hair, blue eyed fair skinned daughter, and use Coppertone Baby, the spray for her body and the stick for her face. She has never burned, but I always bring her in after an hour, because she starts looking pink. I can't wait to hear the suggestions, maybe there is one that lasts a long time!

I swear my Blue Lizard!! My daughter is blonde/blue eyed and fair and have NEVER burned with it on. We spend a lot of time on the beach and at the pool. I can only find it locally at CVS or I order a larger size online at Drugstore.com. If you google it and read the reviews you can see that everyone loves it!! It is a little more expensive than most but worth it since it works!

I have been reading lately that you want to make sure you get a sunscreen that has Helioplex in it. This is an ingredient that protects against UVA & UVB rays - some sunscreens don't protect against both and it is important to do so. I use the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer, SPF 55 with both my children and myself. My son is VERY fair with light blue eyes and my daughter is only 9 months old. It does say to reapply frequently with swimming and perspiration. Also, you should buy new sunscreen each year, even if you have some left over. The ingredients aren't made to last that long. Another thing we do is apply about 30 minutes before sun exposure - the sunscreen needs time. Plus Target makes bathing suits with a sunscreen protected shirt and bottoms (about $13) for infants. They help give added protection. Good Luck - Florida sun can be brutal!

Before you purchase an sunscreen check out this article and click on the link, in the article (Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Data Base) to find the toxicitity (sp??) levels of the sunscreen. I was very suprised. Huggies brand is one of the worst. FYI...

When my daughter was little my pediatrician recommended using shirts to minimize the sunscreen need. They make awesome "wet suit" looking bathing suits with UV protection built right in. Then you only have to sunscreen what's sticking out. Much easier to clean off and less toxic!

Plus, we only go swimming before 10am or after 4pm and don't stay out too long.

Hi S..
Arbonne International makes a terrific sunscreen for babies.

Many of the sunscreens today are so filled with chemicals that it's actually the product which burns the skin!

I kayak alot, and while I like to be out in the water, I cover as much of my own skin as possible. If my kids were little I'd do the same (daughter was always wearing a bonnet to protect her scalp, neck and face when she was a Florida baby).

Ifyou use sunscreen, remember to reapply frequently.

We use Ocean Potion for Babies. It does not have all the toxic chemicals that the other brands do and it works, my daughter has never burned. I also put sun shirts on her. She refuses to wear a hat. We go to the beach a lot and this one has never failed me.
