Sunblock for Baby Under 6 Months?

We want to take my son to the zoo, but I also have a 5-month old dd with sensitive skin and don't want her to get burned, any suggestions? It's supposed to be in the 60's today where I am, but other than that a beautiful day and I'd hate to waste it!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Nevermind all, I finally got through to the pediatrician and she told me that she couldn't wear sunblock, and really wasn't very nice about it.

Thanks to the ones who responded, I will definitely go get some of that for the summer! We did go to the zoo and it was nice enough to keep all covered except her face and hands, and she had as much fun as my son!

After she reaches 6 months, you might want to try Arbonne. I know a few people that have tried many kinds and found that Arbonne did not irritate their skin. Have fun!

You probably got some responses already, but my dermatologist said to avoid sunblock until 6 mos. Until that point, avoid the sun using clothing, hats and stroller shields. I have a 4 mo old and so far that's worked for us on pretty days here in Atlanta. Good luck!

I used Aveeno children's/baby sunblock on my boy when he was under 6 months old. It was fine!

I am editing my response because I just saw where you spoke to your pediatrician. I'm glad everything turned out fun and you all had a great day -however, MY pediatrician recommended the Aveeno and had no issues whatsoever with me putting it on a 2 month old (who was at the beach, the zoo, the park and music festivals from about 1 month on in the spring and summer). I know they all have their own little quirks about certain things, but I thought you might like to know that's not an "across-the-board" directive.

There is a sunscreen that is formulated for babies. I used it on my daughter when she was that small and I use it now and she has really sensitive skin and she is a red head with fair skin. It has an SPF of 50 and it is in a dark pink squeeze bottle. Most sunscreen formulated specially for babies will be good. Make sure she is covered and wears a hat. Have fun.

Hey, J. here!
I know this is a bit late, but good for later, you need that sunblock for visiting JAX next time too.
We use California Baby sunblocks, it even repel bugs too. Check out babycenter.com, they have good price (still, very pricy compare with other brand, but it works well for sensitive skins!)

It is still cool enough to put lightweight long sleeves on her and a brimmed hat should be enough. The zoo in Atlanta is pretty shaded, as well.

Hi C.,

I have an excellent sunblock for babies/kids. I wouldn't use anything else on my children. I sell the product and used it for my first child all summer at the pool with no burns! It is a natural product so it doesn't have the chemicals and mineral oils in it that most other brands do and it works! It is SPF30 and gives protection from both UVA and UVB rays, which is critical for sunburns but also prevention of cancers.
Let me know if you are interested,
K.

Try just a hat with a brim and clothes that cover the rest of her body. You can find hats that tie under the chin if she pulls them off.

Try Baby Magic. I think it's by Playtex, and it is a baby lotion and sunblock in one. I had the same problem with my little one, as his skin is very sensitive. Hope that helps!

We used Blue Lizard for sensetive skin. It is a little hard to find, but we did a bunch of research and it seemend to be one of the best out there.

Dispite what your Ped said, I used sun block on both my kids before they were 6 months!! I just used the highest SPF baby block that I could and they were just fine. You'll still want to keep your 5 month old out of the sun for the most part but the sun block will help in those moments when that isn't 100% possible. Good luck and have fun with all your trips to the zoo with both kids!!

personal i would find a baby-sitter. b/c more than likely your 4 year old is potty trained and taking a 6 month old could take away from him, and he may get grompy and she may have an off day. just something to think about.

My kids are much older, but I've always wondered if it would have been ok to use Desitin lotion on them as a sunscreen. It has zinc oxide, which is in most sunblocks. If it's ok to slather on thier hineys why not use it as sunblock? (besides the fact that it smells funny that is)

Has anyone ever asked their pediatician about using Desitin?

WARNING: I'm looking at some of these post that say they used sunblock on their babies and it didn't irritate their skin. That's not what the docs are worried about. The PROBLEM is that the baby's liver cannot properly handle the ingredients in the sunblock that absorb into the body. These chemicals can become TOXIC to the baby.

We had the same dilemma last year, basically we opted for a thinner long sleeve and long pant item as well as a hat and used sunscreen where we knew she'd get burnt but that way we were using as little as posssible because it is quickly absorbed by their skin. I did not apply it to her hands or feet since they are in her mouth all the time. I hope that helps!

Avon Sunscreen works well... My daughter has trouble with rashes from other OTC sunscreens, but this one has never caused a break out

I would recommend Blue Lizard. It is a little hard to find, and a little expensive. But, my daughter and I have severely sensitive skine, especially to sunvlock, and this is the only one that I would recommend. Plus it blocks out UVA and UVB rays, which most sunblocks only block out UVB.

We went to the beach when my dd was 5 months old and the doctor told us it was ok to go ahead and use it on her...early sunblock better than a sunburn! I washed it off as soon as we would come inside and she was fine and she has very pale, sensitive skin. Hope that helps!

Hi C.,
Yes-definitely put sunblock on your baby and other child!!!! The only other alternative is to keep them completely shaded while they are in the sunlight! Did you know that a woman in georgia was recently prosecuted for allowing her child to get sunburned????
Georgia sun can burn sensitive baby and child skin uickly-even in March! Don't take chances!

My oldest daughter's (she is 16)pediatrician recommended No Ad when she was an infant. That is all I have used on my girls. I used it on them as infants and still use it. Everytime I try to use something else they either react to the lotion or get sunburned, so I stick with the No Ad. It should work for you little one. Call your pediatrician to make sure. Also, the hat and cover her stroller! Have fun at the zoo!
