Sun Block

I am wondering if there is any sun block out there that I can use on my 3 and a 1/2 month old. I know everything says not to use on infants under 6 months, but it's way to hot to keep my baby completely covered in long sleeves, she sweats a lot even when it's not that hot outside.

What can I do next?

Hi Jamie
I didn't use sunblock at that age. But I was still to hot to want to be in the sun long then any way. I would put a sun hat on my baby to protect her face and eyes.

California Baby SPF 30. It is free of the harsher chemicals and works (well) by sitting on TOP of the skin and reflecting the UVA/UVB. It is also paraben free (so great) and fragrance free. I would not put the standard (ie,coppertone) brands on my baby...I try not to even put them on my 7/8 year olds unless I'm in a pinch.

You can get it at Whole Foods, or I have heard that Target may carry it now too.

PS---I would still try hard to stay out of the sun with her. The shade will always feel much cooler and you wouldn't want her to get dehydrated (you say she sweats a lot and the sunlight will only make that worse!)

California Baby has a really good one, it is chemical free so I don't see why you couldn't use it on a baby under 6 months

I called my ped for those times when we just couldn't stay out of the sun... He told me that he preferred sun block any day over a sunburn, just to avoid the eyes and to always wash it off before going to bed.

our ped. told me that as long as your not slathering it on EVERYDAY and trying to take your newborn to the beach that it is safe to put sunblock on them at times... from real little...
I always dressed our kiddos in basicly a onesie and tried to keep them in the shade as much as possible... But i have 3 fair skinned munchkins and would put some on their noses, ears, and arms/ legs as a precaution for those days that shade is not a definant...

Edit... All 3 of mine are fair skinned... Burnt thru an umbrella and "spf proof" shade at 5 pm(using both at same time) Pay attention mainly to YOUR child and how fair they are, where you are, (parking lots, sand, asphalt, and water really reflect the heat and rays)The best would be to keep them in shade, with light clothes on, but if your baby is as fair as my red heads, sunscreen is also a good idea if you must be out...

My daughter is now 13 months, but last summer she was an infant and I asked my pediatrion about this. I was told that you can use sunscreen on a baby however, manufactures don't print this on the label as some parents would see this as a case to keep their infants out in the sun on a regular basis. As long as the baby is only out in the sun in moderation it should be okay to use sunscreen.

I'd use the sunscreen - it is way better than the guilt you will have over a burn on the poor baby! Our pediatrician has the same logic. As long as it is not used EVERY day, there should be no problem. Also, like any other lotion, avoid the baby's hands - you know they are going to go straight into her mouth!

Someone mentioned it but I also agree that Arbonne Sunscreen for babies is great. My son has had no reaction to that (or their other baby products). He also rubs his hands everywhere and then puts them in his mouth. I'm sure he's gotton some sunscreen in his mouth, and has had no problems.

I have always used sunscreen on my kids from just a few months on. Sometimes, you have to put common sense in the equation and if you're going to be outside, NO expert would tell you to skip the sunscreen! It's a guideline...that's all...there is no magic about being 6 months old. Do you want her in the sun all the time? Of course not...but Im sure you already know that! LOL Trust your mommy instincts...you'll do just the right thing!

I've honestly never heard of that. Living in Mississippi, my children had on sunscreen from the day they were born:-) We never had any problems.

My pediatrician recommended Earth's Best Organic, for those times you can't keep your little one out of the sun. My daughter has had no reaction to it...and no sunburns:) We also use hats a lot!

I also think sunblock in moderation is ok, but we live near the lakeshore, and I found my Kwik Cabana SPF tent invaluable. It pops right up, and while it's dicey on a windy day, it provided very nice shelter for each of my three kids when they were that young. It's great for naps and for a shaded play area at the park, beach, or anywhere. I would also recommend Shaklee sunscreen lotion which would be another all natural brand. I'm a distributor so e-mail me offline if you are interested!

I hadn't had this problem, my daughter was born in December so she was old enough by the time summer rolled around. I would call your peditrician. Also I'd just keep her shaded all the time, oppose to long sleeves. You don't want her getting over heated, that could be dangerous.

my daughter was born last year in may. during the summer when she was 2 and 3 months old we spent a lot of time on the boat at the lake, my ped told me any baby sunscreen is fine. water babies is fine, or i use the hawaiin tropic spf 50 (i think) it is thick and works well for me.
just be careful some babies skin is more sensitive if your baby breaks out try another brand

I have used Arbonne's sunscreen on my twins since they were 2 months old with no reaction. It's free of all the harmful chemicals and it's botanically-based, derm./ped. tested, and totally safe. They've never had a sunburn and they're 16 months old. A couple tips I learned, make sure and apply sunscreen before you even go outside - there was an article in Parent's mag. that talked about sunscreens needing time to really get into the skin. Re-apply often and keep baby out of direct sun, of course. Also, if you don't choose Arbonne, beware of sunscreens with over 30 spf; baby can get a chemical burn. Good luck and have a fun summer!

Aubrey Organics totally natural and chemical free. Does a great job. Don't get the green tea kind though, very messy. Available at whole foods or online: www.aubrey-organics.com

Hi J.,

Arbonne makes an ABC (Arbonne Baby Care) sunscreen that is pure, safe and beneficial. It has an SPF of 30 and is non-irritating. If you'd like more information or to place an order, just let me know.

There are a lot of chemicals in sun screen, so I'd rethink applying it so young. The hottest/most damaging sun is between 10 & 2. If you can avoid being outside during those times. In the shade with light clothing and a sun hat to shade the face should be enough.

J.,

Please keep your baby out of the sun- there is a very important reason for the 6 month warning- babies that age are so small in comparison to the amount of skin they have- she will absorb too many chemicals into her body from the sunblock and it can make her very sick. It's so not worth it.

You don't have to keep her covered head to toe, just stay in the shade- at that age you have complete control over her environment- keep an umbrella in the car just in case.

Good Luck,

T.

Lots of clothing companies make sun clothes with the spf built right in now! I like the Old Navy rash guards and I believe Target has a sun hat and terry cover up. The usual is spf 40. You just have to pay special attention to the wash directions and don't use dryer balls.
