I am looking for a (reasonably-priced) overnight camp for my 8 year old son to attend. I don't mind trying but I need it to stay in the state.

What can I do next?

I'm sending my son to Sky Ranch this summer. He will be there for a week. The 1st and last weeks are discounted to 500.00 for the week. The camp is located by Tyler about 90 miles from Plano. I've talked to several parents that love the camp, but this will be our first year.

The YMCA does overnight camps. I'm not sure if they're done at the Collin County Adventure camp or not, but there is a link to it at the bottom of their webpage. It's called Camp Grady. My daughter has done overnight girl scout camp outs at Collin County Adventure camp, so if it is held there, I can vouch that it's a nice place.

I'd try Camp Tonkawa in Collinsville, TX. My kids haven't been there yet, but I met the owner and her 2 sons at a Summer Fun Showcase and was very impressed with her AND her sons. The camp is only about an hour north of us, and they do a lot of "nature" kind of stuff.

The rates look reasonable, but the weeklong camp is for 9 year olds and up (I'm not sure if you can talk her into letting your 8 year old attend. They have 3 day camps for younger kids. Pricing is online as well ($360 for 5-day; $195 for 3-day). Sounds pretty reasonable, but I haven't researched others to know.

Good luck!

I know you said you wanted to stay in state but I am going to recomend this anyways because it is close. All through my childhood (I started at age 8 and ended up working there during the summer when I was in high school) I went to Camp Classen. It is a YMCA camp in Davis Oklahoma only like a 2 hour drive from Dallas. These were probably my favorite times as a child. They offer one and two week sessons. I do not know the current pricing but here is the link to their web site if you want to check it out.
