Summer Day Camps in Pearland Area?

We are pretty new to the area(been here for 11 months) I have two son's that will graduate soon from HS. I have another son that is 13, and not active enough for his age. I would like some advice on different things kids of this age do in this area for fun. I would love to find a church we could all get involved in as a family. I am use to a small church, but my husband likes bigger churches. I just feel like if it is too big or too many people my son will not want to participate in anything with other kids his age. Are there any summer day camps in this area for his age group? Please let me know, I want him to make new friends and quit sitting in front of the TV and or playing games all of the time. He is over weight for his age, but we both need to lose weight. If there might be some kind of aerobics class that we could attend together that would be great. Thanks.

What can I do next?

I wanted to thank each and everyone of you who took time out of your day to respond to my request. I appreciate it so very much. We have not had a chance to check any of them out due to graduation being just around the corner. But as soon as we do I will let everyone know more. Good Luck, S.

Hello S., WELCOME! to Pearland. I am a long time resident that has seen many changes throughout this town. I would like to extend an invite to check out the church my family attends. Not knowing which type church your looking for (there are many here of different denomination.) Please feel free to visit, its Garden Road Baptist on Garden Road, that is off FM518 and Garden Road (@ the yellow flashing light and where the Hampton Inn is located on the corner). Our Sunday school is at 9:30 and church serve starts at 10:45. We are a small church.

I wanted to let you know of a church camp we send our children to here in Pearland. I also personally know the youth minister and she is great! Its called Camp Hope @ New Life Lutheran Church located at 3531 E. Orange St. Phone number is ###-###-####. They have three separate weeks to choice from, all in July. Our kids went last year and each one really had a great time. I would estimate during the week, @ camp, they ranged about 20 to 30 kids. (I think.) I hope this helps any other questions just ask, I know picking a church is guided by the Lord, but hope you brings y'all by. Best Wishes.

S.,
Check with City of Pearland Parks and Rec. There is a program Kidtastic Summer Camp, I am not sure of the ages but that may be a place to start. The Pearland YMCA is good and my daughter went when she was 12 or 13.
There used to be a summer science camp that was offered in Pearland, I think it was held at the high school and my son did it when he was 8 or 9 and absolutely loved it.

We live in Pearland and have for 36 years. We are in the Alvin School district where we live and we attend church in Alvin. We attend Alvin Missionary Baptist Church and they have some children's programs. I know that there are several good churches in Pearland that offer many childrens programs. Our church is not huge but not real small either.

I am a mother of a 16 year old daughter and I also have a 11 year old step son (he is as much mine as my daughter is)

I found a church that is great. I wasnt involed in church for several years and never thought I would be again until I was planning my wedding. I found a church called Asbury methodist church. Its in pasadena but I sure they have one in pearland also. The one in pasadena is small but has a good size building. Its off of space center and genoa red bluff. They are really great people and they call you by name and remember your name. Also the preacher Mike shakes everyones hand while they leave. For getting your son into something you might try to see if he likes fishing. It may not get him active alot but it will help with getting him out of the house and meeting others that like the same thing and maybe start him into going out in having fun with more active things, plus you never know you might enjoy fishing as well.

With the responce from kristine I agree also. They are really big and from what I here from others that go there they are great with alot of activites for the kiddos. you should check them out as well.

Welcome S.! My family and I started attending New Hope Church about a year and a half ago. I was very hesitant to go at first because it is a very large church and figured that we would be just another nameless face in the crowd, but I couldn't have been more wrong. We love it and felt welcomed and made connections right from the start. The church has TONS of activities for the junior/high school age kids. The group for this age is called "The Krush", you can check it out online if you'd like, just type in "New Hope Church- Pearland, TX". There are also lots of groups that you may be interested in joining as well. I hope that you find what your looking for.

The YMCA has a day camp for kids his age. It is a great program. They do lots of different activities. My son went when he was younger & LOVED it! The would go swimming & play ball & many great things. It keeps them active, involved & teaches them to work with others, participate & grow. They also have tons of workout options for you. They are affordable & if you need help, they offer "scholarships" that help. they never turn anyone away for the inability to pay.
Good Luck!

Hey S.,
My name is D. & I am 43 with 2 boys left at home. I'm a secretary in the Children's Ministry at Sagemont Church which is a very large church in the area. I completely understand what you are saying about large churches - I fought my husband about coming to this church 19 years ago - but after finding the little church in the big church by getting involved & meeting people I found that I loved it here and of course now I'm on staff & I still love it. We have a large children's & student ministry & lots of things going on for the kids if you are interested. Our student ministry has a summer camp each year you may want to check out and they have a new student minister that is just starting. We are very excited to see the new things our students will be doing! I have some friends who swear by the YMCA as far as being active & getting their kids active. You might want to check into that because Pearland has a very nice facility. We stay very active in sports because my oldest & youngest sons are very sportsy kind of kids. I help out a lot with the baseball teams my youngest is on and that keeps me active. I don't have info on the Y, but I'm sure they have a wesite. Sagemont's website is www.sagemontchurch.org if you want to check out what is available & I know any of us here would love to talk to you. The number is ###-###-#### if we can be of help.

Hi S.. We are fairly new to the Pearland area as well; although we're going on 23 months now. You can check out this website and click on the 2008 Leisure Brochure for camp listings. Many kids play ball at the Dad's Club here in Pearland or Flag Football/Football from what I can tell. We are used to fairly small, traditional churches too; however, we didn't find one here in Pearland that we felt fit our needs. Many of my co-workers recommended Gateway Church off of FM 2351. It is great. It is a bigger church but there are so many opportunities for EVERYONE to get involved in an activity where you'll meet some people and have a wonderful group of support & people that will recognize you. Their kid's program and youth program are great! They have a Summer Kids Camp (I don't remember the ages but it is from June 16-20). Even if your son is too old to attend the camp, he could possibly be a volunteer to help with the other classes.
Let me know if I can be of any more help, if I was any help at all.

The YMCA has a great day camp. Churches don't usually have a day camp for this age but Fellowship Bible Church on 518 in PEarland USED to have AWANAs and probably still do. When I went it only went up to fourth grade but it now goes through highschool. You should check it out!

Pastor Bill Himmel is probably the best pastor I've ever had. I've known him since I was four and he came to the church as a new pastor after many failed attempts at hiring a pastor. He stayed and the church has been truly blessed.
