Summer Baby

Hi all,

My little guy is due July 7 and I'm concerned about how to dress him coming home from the hospital, hanging out at home, and going out. Here in AZ, July is HOT (105-112 degrees typically). I know newborns like to be swaddled, but do you swaddle when the temperature is this high? Should he be wearing pants, long sleeves? My gut says no, but I also don't want him to get cold, either.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

My boys were both born in AZ. One was a November baby and liked to be swaddled for the first couple of weeks. The other was born in late September (still over 100) and hated being swaddled. He still kicks off all blankets.
Also remember that you will have him in a carrier, sling, etc when you go out in the heat, so he won't really be swaddled. Onesie and light blankets all the way. I got several light cotton "sleep sacks" for nighttime, those were great.

The Aden and Anais blankets are excellent and Traget sells them 4 in a pack for around $35.

I know moms who have used them for breast feeding too. They're nice and big. We often covered the car seat with one so baby was covered from the sun, but could still get the air (especially on the beach or boat).

A good rule of thumb is: When it's hot outside, you dress them the same as you dress yourself. When it's cold out, you add one extra layer.

I would dress him in a one piece short sleeved outfit and keep a receiving blanket close at hand all the time for when you are in a/c.

My babies ped said that pretty much if you are comfortable then your baby is, but if you are hot then you baby probably is. Pretty much just go by how you feel. :)

Yep we had a summer baby. I am assuming you have air conditioning in the car and at your house?
Are you comfortable in the car and the house?

If so, then that is how you dress your baby.

Our daughter still runs warm (like me) so even with a fan and air conditioning, sometimes, she would be sweating after a nap.

I used light t shirts on her.. If we took her out it was in a light dress or light cotton outfit.

Her bottom, from her diapers seemed warm, so I tried to avoid any onesies until it cooled of in (our fall) meaning late October.

Swaddling would have been impossible unless we had turned the air conditioner way low.

I learned to place her head up against a rolled up towel, to help her feel snuggled in her crib/Bassinet.

My mother and MIL were constantly trying to put a "light" blanket on her, but she would kick it off every time. They kept talking about drafts.. I told them it is over 100 outside, there is no draft.

Keeping her hydrated was very important and making sure to change her diaper as often as needed also helped her, I think.. I also would let her go without a diaper sometimes, if she felt super warm.. I just put her on a pad.

My son was born in PHX in may. He didn't come home though til the end of June so it was in the 100-teens. I never swaddled him. At night he would wear a light cotton pj and that was it.

I would swaddle him with nothing but a thin onesie underneath. He will be much more comfortable and sleep better swaddled than not. Keep the AC on or a fan if needed. Figure it's no different than you sleeping in your bed with a sheet or blanket over you. Make sure you get the thinner cotton swaddles and swaddling blankets that are airy and breathe better, and not the fleece ones.

Not all babies like to be swaddled. I only had 1 of my 3 that actually liked it. The other 2 hated it!
I have a June baby. I planned layers because going from A/C to outside and such can be uncomfortable.
So I would have a onsie with a pair of light cotton knit pants to pull over it and a light sweater for the arms. I had a girl so I would dress her in cute dresses with the matching diaper cover and then had "Babylegs" legwarmers to put on her legs with again a cute sweater (my MIL went crazy and knitted her so many cute sweaters!) I love Babylegs leg warmers. http://www.babylegs.com/ They aren't too heavy and are easy when you need to do diaper changes. You don't have to take off the extra layer. I also used a lot of footed sleepers if we were going somewhere a bit chillier. I always had a blanket in case I needed an extra layer, easier to take off when she got too hot.
The rule I have seen is no more than one layer more than you are wearing. So if you are wearing shorts and a tank top you don't need to put him in too much more than that either.

Diaper.
Diaper and short sleeved onesie.
If inside and the AC gets cold, diaper, onesie, socks and/or blanket.

My DD was born in August. That's what she wore, and was only swaddled in a very light blanket if she needed it. Her going home outfit was a funny onesie.

She wore long sleeved baby shirts in the hospital b/c they kept it cooler.

The rule of thumb is if you're comfortable, so is the baby. I'd put him in a cute onesie and have a blanket in the car to cover his little legs. You can't swaddle in a car seat. But you'll want to at night. Just grab a couple of hospital blankets before you check out (and as many diapers as you can). :)

I second the Aden and Anais muslin blankets. The bamboo ones are heavenly and you can swaddle away. I just did a onesie and diaper with those blankets.

I had my 2nd daughter at the end of June here in El Paso. I had her in a short-sleeved onesie but covered with a blanket while we were actually IN the hospital (it was COLD in there!). As soon as we got outside, I stripped that blanket. I only really ever swaddled my kids at night to help them sleep (and we had the A/C on to help counteract the trapped heat of swaddling). Other than that, I was either holding them or they were in a bouncy seat.

My son was born in early summer, which is a good 15 degrees cooler then late summer. Still, it was 90+ degrees outside. I had my son in a onesie and used an Aden and Anais swaddle blanket. I seriously can't recommend those enough!!! They are amazing for warm climates. We still use those blankets 4 years later for tents, picnic blankets, capes, etc. They were the best thing I received as a gift.

I swaddled him the entire summer without any overheating. Those blankets are heaven.

I also only swaddled in the house were I could keep the temp cool, otherwise they were just hanging out in a diaper or a onesie.

I just had a baby, my third spring baby in AZ. Since you'd only be swaddling when sleeping, inside, in the A/C, I'd dress the baby in a light, cotton sleeper (long sleeves and feet) and swaddle with a light blanket, such as what they give in the hospital. When going out, I'd do a short-sleeved onesie and shorts, no socks, but keep a light receiving blanket in the diaper bag for times inside in A/C. When just hanging around the house, the onesie and shorts or light pants with socks is good, since you can always grab a light blanket for when he's just sitting in the swing/bouncy.

In addition to what everyone else said, remember that.... infants can overheat, easily. Whether they are in too much clothing, or simply with just a onesie but outside in the sun for too long.
Their system is not fully developed yet.

But being you'd be indoors/in the house with your infant mostly, then the assumption is that you have some kind of air conditioning in your home? If so, then it will not be so HOT in, your home.

I've lived in Phoenix. I know. I also had and am having another summer baby in Southern California (and since we are considered a temperate climate we have no a.c.. so inside temps often in the 80's all summer) That said, an absolute must buy investment are muslin swaddling blankets. They are thin and gauze like. They breath, so great for summer babies.

http://www.adenandanais.com/shop/swaddles.aspx

Now if you have a.c., you may want to dress the baby in long sleeves. But rule of thumb, dress the baby in the same level of breathability that you dress yourself in. If its cold dress them in one extra layer than you dress in. For summer new borns, I found I favored dressing them in just a onzie, At home I often just dressed her in a kimono style shirt with single snap with a diaper and muslin swaddle. That made for really easy changing and didn't overheat her. My guess is that you will need to dress yours a little warmer than I did mine because everyone uses a.c. in AZ. I also purchased some really cute baby bubbles in thin cotton fabrics for going out.

My daughter was actually born 7-7 and when we took her home we had her in a short sleeve onsie. I know we did not have her swaddled we just had her covered lightly with a receiving blanket. Our carset/carrier also had a shade cover and we used a blanket to cover the other half that was not covered.... Mind you I am trying to remember almost 17 years ago. LOL

They say to always dress baby's the way you would be dressed... So if you and your hubby would cover yourselves from head to toe then do so with your child. Just make sure to always keep an eye out for signs that show he is getting to hot.... you will do fine!

Just a onesie.
Unless he's indoors with AC, then long stuff is fine.
I like a onesie with an EASY to take off second layer of pants and shirt; then when it's time to go in the carseat to go out, I take the top layer off. I honestly don't know how you do it in Arizona with temps that hot. It's amazing. I think we'd all melt, and with a baby, wow, you guys are tough over there! :) Swaddle at night, sure, but keep the house cool enough. We've never swaddled in the day, since I want them to sleep really well at night only. Day, they can fuss more and be up.
