Sudden Weight Gain in Pregnancy

ok I have seen a lot of difference answers on here about how much weight a person should gain during pregnancy. I don't really believe in a set number because they tell you if you start off overweight you should only gain between 15-25 pds. However that doesn't work for people like me. BMI charts never work because even when i was a size four on the bottom and a size two on top my BMI was in the overweight (almost obese) range. My weight was 145 then (I am 5ft2) but noone would believe me people guessed my weight more at 115. Now my prepregnancy weight was 160 and a size 8. I should also state that I am bulimic so my doctor is keeping a closer eye on my weight. Now I have had a pretty steady weight gain. at 19 weeks I had gained a total of 13 pds very gradual. Then I gained 2 pds weeks 20 then this past week i gained 7.5 pds. In one week! my doctor said my blood pressure is great and I don't have any swelling and she is not worried about it. she said it pry just a growth spurt from the baby. my eating and drinking habits have not changed. I know because of my ED my prespective maybe a little off, but does anyone else think that 7.5 pds is alot for one week?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Dawn B: Good point on the sugar. It was my first thought too (although I have had no problem diabetes runs in my family) My doctor said that if I do the same thing this next month we will check my sugar then instead of waiting another month.

Thanks Everyone! I am not sure if this happened during my last pregnancy because I didnt weigh myself and got weighed backwards at the doctors because my bulimia was alot worse. Oh and I would love to eat more fruit, but I have a hard time keeping it in the house. Especially berries and bananas. My hubby will eat a whole container of berries in one sitting and my two year old has been eating 3 bananas a day.

I gained almost 45 lbs with my first, and 35 with my second. My regular weight is 110, and I'm 5'0". I lost a lot of weight at the beginning due to extreme nausea. A lot of my weight gain was swelling due to untreated 'on the line' gestational diabetes (I'm hypoglycemic). Is it swelling you are seeing, water weight or baby weight?

I always had a big jump in weight gain around 22-24 weeks. Your blood volume is expanding dramatically right now, it is probably mostly fluid. But so many things can affect your weight at that current moment (just after a meal, heavier clothes, constipated, full bladder, can all add up). Toward the end of my second pregnancy when I was seeing my midwife every other week and weekly, my weight would go up a few pounds if my appt was in the morning as I was getting off working a night shift, then next week it would be down a few pounds if it was a regular morning and i had not worked the night before. Up and down, up and down, but in the end I gained the recommended amount, all my babies were healthy. Just maintain a healthy eating plan and don't fret about the numbers.

Just trust your doctor. If he/she says not to worry, don't. If they say to get a test or to cut back, cut back. My experience (3 times pregnant) is that the gain isn't consistent or the same week to week. Good luck!

I think that everyone is different. With both of my pregnancies I actually lost weight until the last 2 months, and then I put on just a little bit until the last few weeks where I gained 40 and 50 pounds each. I also lost is really fast too. I had no complications and no problems, so its just what my body did. I would think that your body is just getting into baby mode, and if your doc isn't worried, then I wouldnt' be either. Good luck and try not to stress too much, its h*** o* the baby when you do.

Nope....my sister had the exact same thing happen. Baby and her were fine and it didn't send any alarms to the doctors. We all thought it was a lot to gain in a week, but apparently it happens. No worries....enjoy your pregnancy and try not to focus too much on the weight gain. Congrats to you and best wishes!

Well since they are already going to check your sugar if it continues, and you are feeling ok and everything else looks good I'd say it's nothing to worry about. Because you're bulimic you are watching that scale a lot closer as well. Could be a different scale, different clothing, any number of things can account for a few pounds here and there. And like others have said that's the point I always gain a ton of weight as well. And I'm sure in a couple more weeks when I hit that halfway point with this baby the same thing will happen again.

I had a similar weight jump in my 2nd pregnancy. I hadn't gained more than 5 lbs in the first trimester and then about week 17 or 18, I gained 10 lbs!!! Same as you, no changes to food or anything. I think each body gains differently. If you are concerned about sugar and or diabetes---ask for a test. GL

My first pregnancy I had two months in a row that I gained 11 pounds. Ack. My second I didn't gain a single pound until I was 7 months, and still managed to put on 30 pounds. This time I am 7 months and have only gained 1 pound so far, we will see how this one goes.

If you are concerned, speak to your doctor. Sudden gain that is water weight (like in your face or appendages) can be a sign of pre-eclampsia, which is what my sister experienced. I also had a cousin who gained, and it was due to too much fluid around her baby so they had to be carefully monitored. If you've already spoken to your doctor, just call if you see another jump or if you feel sick (unusual pains, etc).

I gained 7 lbs in two weeks at around 34 weeks. I think it was a mix of growth spurt and swelling...though it wasn't very visible swelling, except at night. Yes, it can be normal. If your doctor isn't worried, I wouldn't be either. I start of pretty light, and I have gained up to 50 lbs in a pregnancy...then it comes back off pretty quickly. Within 1.5 weeks, about 30 lbs of it is gone. I think my babies weigh a lot...hehe (actually, they really do! my son was 10 lbs 11 oz!).

Oh, and it was just a few weeks ago that I gained the 7 lbs. I decided to start eating a LOT of fruit. I lost a pound by two weeks later and the swelling went way down. I am now a big believer in fruit. And by saying I ate a lot of it, here's an example of a day for me:

- Eat grapefruit in the morning (a little salt sprinkled on it).
- About 15-20 minutes later, eat a banana with peanut butter (need the protein).
- For a snack later on, I eat 3-4 celery with peanut butter (again, need the protein! Otherwise I have no endurance).
- Eat a lunch of protein - such as a ham sandwich.
- Eat a snack of fruit - apple or mango or grapefruit
- Eat dinner of protein and some other types of carbs
- Eat a night snack of avocado (has tomatoes, cilantro, onion, lemon juice in it).

I have had SO MUCH MORE energy when eating like this. I feel surprisingly good. If people ate fruit, they wouldn't need coffee! You just have to find a nice balance with protein to be sure to get the endurance. The fruit/veggies offer energy...the protein offers the endurance.

I don't eat crappy carbs, except rarely.

Good luck!

If it happens week after week i'd be concerned, but once, i wouldnt. I had my twins 9 months ago and somewhere around the middle of my pregnancy I went in and had gained 7 pounds within 5 days. I was freaking out but my OB said not to worry unless it starts happening weekly. No problem, I freaked out too. Congrats on your baby!!
