Stroller Advice for Soon-To-Be Mom of Two

I am thinking about getting a new stroller that would accommodate both of my children once the new baby comes in June. However, my now 18 month old (who will be 23 months when the new baby comes) never EVER uses her stroller. She walks everywhere with us, usually holding our hands. At 23 months will she actually lose her mind and run around like a mad woman throwing tantrums wherever we go, though? I can see this being a challenge once I'm toting a newborn around, but what are your experiences? Does a stroller ever really contain the tantrum? I was thinking of just investing in a great new carrier that I can use for either sized child, which would be less than half the price of a new stroller ($80 babyhawk.com carrier versus $400 phil & ted's e3 double stroller).

What can I do next?

LITAF

it is an attachment to add onto any stroller.
i got it on EBAY but you can get it a Baby Depot.
i actually had it attached to my triple stroller (I do daycare) as easy as i attached it to the umbrella stroller.

I don't know if a double stroller will work for you, but I LOVE my Grago Quatro Tour for my 3.5yr old and 9mo old.

I would definately invest in a double stroller. You could get one alot less expensive even used, then if you don't use it much, wouldn't be that much lost but would still have it if you need it. I have had both types of doubles (prefer the side-by-side) and a jogging triple. The most I have paid for one was $300 including shipping from Ebay for my triple jogger. You just never know when you might want a stroller for both.
Good luck!

Hi D.,
I LOVE my sit and ride stroller - I think mine's made by Joovy, but I've seen a few models out there. The baby rides up front (it reclines somewhat, so even newborns can ride in it as long as you give them neck support with a rolled-up receiving blanket) and big kids can sit (buckle optional) or stand and ride in the back. My kids are 26 months apart, and this stroller has been ideal for times when you need both kids contained, like parking lots and airports, or when you're going somewhere and your big kid gets tired of walking. Trust me, many tantrums have been avoided with this thing. I recommend it very highly. Worth every penny.

i have 2 girls and i have a standard double stroller. my oldest doesnt fight with me about the stroller so its not a problem but if i was you, i would go for something like those stand and sit double strollers. they have a spot in front for the newborns carrier/car seat and the older one can either sit or stand on the back. maybe if you give her the choice to stand or sit and which way to face she wont throw a big tantrum.

Hi D.,
I would highly recommend the Baby Trend stroller. The one that we bought when my second child was born accomodated and infant carrier in the front and my daughter, who at the time of my son's birth was 2 1/2, allowed her the option of either sitting in the back on a little bench that strapped her in or she could stand on the back. The stroller would adjust to something like 8 different brand infant carriers. We had a Graco. Then when my son was old enough to be out of the carrier he sat in the front of the stroller, strapped in. It is nice because it has ample storage in the bottom and my daughter loved the flexability of riding, standing or walking next to me. The only neg. thing would be that it is a bit heavy but other than that I Love it. We purchased ours at a Target for about $120.00. And my daughter can ride on the back until she is about 40 pounds.
I hope that this helps you.
L.

Try the catalog or website: One Step Ahead and look up : "Buggy Board" It is an attachment to the back of a stroller and the child can stand on and ride on it. It can be lifted up and out of your way when not in use. Another option in the same catalog is a stroller that has an extra seat that faces the pusher of the stroller. Good storage space when not in use. There are great inventions out there, just have to find the right one for you.

I had my second child when my daughter was 26 months old. She too was used to walking around, but I did get a double stroller for the both of them. It made my trips a lot easier when going out with both of them at first. However, I also use an alternative because my daughter wants to walk and not ride in the stoller. I purchased a little back-pack that has a harness and a leash. I found it at target (also at wal-mart, babies r us - only about $10) it looks like a stuffed dog, monkey, or bear and my daughter thinks it is a backpack, but I am able to hold the leash and allow her to walk. It is wonderful, I just keep it in the car and use it everywhere.

My aunt has 4 kids between the ages of 2-7 years old. When they were younger we would go to the zoo with my son who is right in the middle of the mix. My son and one of the girls were the same age. My son, if walking would stay right with us, always making sure he had some adults hand and yell to tell us when he didn't. (They were between the ages of 2 and 3 at the time.) The other girl his age would not hold anyones hand, would let go of the stroller when told to hold on to the stroller and loved to stop and smell the flowers (literally would stop and smell the flowers for a few minutes). Even with 3 adults (my mom would go) watching all the kids, the flower smelling girl would still manage to stop without anyone noticing every once in awhile. My point is, each child is different. Each child has a different personality. My son won't leave my side in public places unless I tell him it is ok to do so, and tell him I'm watching him the whole way. He is scared to death he will get lost or left behind, even though it's never happened to him. When at home playing, if I do not check on him "often enough" he will come check on me, tell me what he is doing and what he plans on doing next. It's his personality. My aunts daughter could care less if anyone pays a bit of attnetion to what she is doing or whats going on. My aunts other kids are not like this at all. It's the personality. I would say if I had to choose, I would choose a double stroller for the sense that if your daughter regresses and thinks the baby is getting attention by being in the stroller then she will want in the stroller also.

Hi D., I was in the same position not long ago and thankfully, we saved our pennies and stuck with the stroller we had. My now 2 year old son ( who was 18 months when his sister was born) never sat in the stroller and still doesn't. He normally holds our hand when we are out and most times, I can put my daughter in her carseat in the cart and my son will either walk or sit in the cart seat. I usually try and get a cart that has a car or some special seats to make it more interesting! Doesn't contain tantrums but so far, there haven't been too many meltdowns and if there are, I just stop and hold onto him or put him in the cart. Save your money I say! Good luck with everything :)
