I have been trying to loss weight and increased my running distance too far too fast when i started running outside. I'm now having pain on the top of my right foot when i run or walk. I've stopped running but my doctors appt. is over a week away. I'm not sure if this is in fact a stress fracture. Has anyone who runs had an injury like this and what can i expect from the doctors visit, healing process, and transaction back into running.

What can I do next?

Here is an excerpt of an article to figure out if it is a stress fracture:

Tim Noakes, author of Lore of Running, lists four symptoms of a stress fracture: 1) it comes on without warning; 2) there is no other obvious explanation; 3) you can sometimes find a spot on the bone so tender that pressing on it will produce a pain he describes as "exquisite" or "nauseating"; and 4) it fails the "hop" test, which means it hurts if you hop on the injured leg (don't try this if you suspect a hip stress fracture).

If it is a stress fracture you will likely have to stay off it for a while so finding an alternative form of excercize would be a good idea.Swimming is a great option.

I got a stress fracture from power walking! I couldn't wait a week because I couldn't put my foot down. They got me in for xrays. It took more than 8 weeks in a boot..........

I swam for exercise during that time, but had to be careful and mostly use my arms.

Here is a great weight loss program that is extremely healthy and will help you heal quickly:

You need to make sure that you have an MRI b/c a stress fracture will not show in an X-ray. I had one for this same reason and i had to take a break for 6 weeks and wear a brace and take anti-inflamatory drugs. Mine was on the side on my ankle and it just felt like somone was sticking thier finger on a bruse when i ran. It didn't hurt too bad when i walked. Good Luck, if you stop running now you might be able to shave a week off later.

My son, my husband, and my son's college roommate are all distance runners. My son and husband have prevented injuries by using nutritional supplements that support healthy bone and joint function. The roommate has suffered a lot from stress fractures - the only treatment that will be recommended by the doctor is rest and perhaps immobilization, plus a lot of drugs. Once the roommate started on the same supplements, he improved immensely and was able to go back to running. There are clinical trials on the supplements I'm talking about - you can't just take any old thing especially because the nutrition industry isn't regulated. I also have a friend who is a mid-distance runner and a track coach - he'd be happy to talk to you as well. You might have to rest for a few weeks but if you build up your body's immune system and healing process, you will get back to running a lot sooner and, more importantly, you won't have a recurrence. My son had a lot of injuries if he ran more than 35 miles a week (we did xrays, orthopedic specialist, physical therapy, etc.) - he now runs 80-105 miles a week with no injuries. My husband is 62 and is running more than ever, and he's gotten rid of his knee braces. I'd be happy to help you if you want.
