My 6 yr old was sent home from school friday with a fever. She never acted like she had a sore throat, or any symptoms of strep throat. She goes to her dads every weekend. She went to the dr monday and he diagonsied her wtih strep throat and put her on antibotics. She has been staying at her dads because i have a month and a half old baby at home. She has been on antibotics since monday but still gets a fever. Could anyone please explain to me why she is still getting a fever and if this is normal. Her stp-mom is calling her peditratcian as we speak. any advice would be helpful. Thank you.

So What Happened?

Ok so i talked to her doc and he said that if she has a fever in the morning to call him and he will get her in his office 2morrow. I asked him if myself or the baby would catch it and he said we wouldn't as long as we dont' drink after her or kiss her. I am a very causious mom when it comes to my kids being sick. She has been at her dads since friday and just came home this evening. She hasn't been around her little brother that much so im not worried about him. The doc told me to continue with the tylenol for the fever. thanks for the advice everyone i appreciate it greatly.

She went to the dr today and he put her on zithromax 200 milligram, said the amoxicillion wasn't strong enought and she has a worse case than what they noticed. Have her on pedisure to keep fluids in her and also popsicles and chicken noodle soup.

This is so possible. The fever is the body's way of trying to fight the illness on it's own. Typically it will take 3 or 4 days of antibiotic therapy for a person to "start feeling better." The fever can continue for that time. I'm sure the doctor has advised giving tylenol for the fever and sore throat?? if she has one. Just make sure she is getting plenty of fluids and taking the medication at the right time and all of it as the doctor ordered. One negative note....if she did have strep throat, chances of you and your baby being exposed to the virus/bacteria already is big. So be sure to watch the little one for fever, hoarseness after crying and a possible small white bump rash. My 10 yr old had the rash that started on her tummy and spread to her neck and arms and legs. I noticed the rash, took her to the doc and had forgotten she complained of a sore throat 1 week before for a day. It was strep throat. Her only sign was the rash...good luck and I hope she feels better soon!

My son had strep throat when he was 3 years old.His dr.gave him and antibiotic as well. That alone didn't help the fever.I gave him motrin for children as well as cold towels on his forehead. That took the fever back down to normal.

She may need a stronger antibiotic. I had a friend whose son had the same problem and he went through several different antibiotics before the strep finally went away. Her son finally had to have his tonsils removed because when he got strep it was so hard to get rid of it. This may not be the case with your daughter.

She could caught a virus as well. The antibiotic could not be working on the strep bacteria. There are probably other reasons also. Just follow the doctors advice. If it that the antiobiotic is not working they will give a different one.

More than likely she has viral strep and antibiotics does nothing for viruses..only bacterias. Her body is fightin git and all you can really do is make her comfortable. Of course call the Ped and ask about it, maybe she was diagnosed in correctly. It bothers me that she was given an antibiotic for a virus as well, this is how people become immune to Antibiotics. Call her dr.

The course of treatment they gave her may not be working for her. They may have to change her antiobiotic.
