Strep & Tonsils

My 6 1/2 year old daughter was just diagnosed today with her 5th strep infection since October. We always throw out the toothbrush and disinfect the entire house including bedding, etc. We even had the dog put on antibiotics after the last round of strep. She has been home most of Christmas break-away from other kids. This caught us by surprise.

The pediatrician is now referring us to an ENT doctor for possibly removing her tonsils. I was wondering if any of you have dealt with repeated strep and then ended up removing tonsils. Did it help?

Does anyone recommend an ENT?

Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thank you to all who responded. We are scheduled to see an ENT doctor during Spring Break. Since they said a solid two week recovery we are going to try and hold off until summer for any surgery.

My son just had his adenoids out by Dr. Alan Murray in Coppell. He's in practice with another doc at ENT for Children (www.entforchildren.net). They are WONDERFUL. Patiently answered all of my questions, were attentive to my son, and provided me with all the necessary information. His surgery was done at the Plano Pediatric Surgery Center, and that was a great experience as well.

As far as repeated strep infections, you should Google strep throat and/or tonsillitis. From what I understand, some people can become "colonized" with strep, and those are the folks who get it year after year. I don't know if removing tonsils will help it, but the ENT should be able to tell you that.

My daughter had recurrent Strep Throat when she was younger too. We were at a doctor that I didn't care for (was insurance issue keeping us there) and he had just written out her FIFTH consecutive antibiotic. I didn't like that and I took her to an ENT on my own, without a referral. He scheduled a tonsillectomy within the next month and her tonsils were removed without any complications. Now, removing your tonsils will not keep you from getting Strep... but it will keep you from getting it as often. My daughter has had it once in 6 years, and she had it every three months before. I would recommend that you DO seek the advice of an ENT. It was a very minor procedure with major results.

C.,

I haven't had the issue with a child, but growing up until I was about 29 I got strep at least 2-3 times a year. I finally had my tounsils taken out at 30. That was 5 years ago and I haven't had even a sore throat since. The tounsilectomy is much harder on adults. Not to mention I was sick every Christmas for years.

Good luck!

My family had different ENT issues and we visited Dr. Neelesh Mehendale at Centennial Hospital. He is very gentle with the children and very personable with the parents. He really took time to work with us on the best option. He also talked with our pediatrician so he could get a better understanding of our childrens’ history and treatments.
Last year we had both my daughter and son’s adenoids removed and tubes put in their ears. We’ve continued to visit him for follow-up visits.

I can recommend a good ENT. He is at Medical City of Dallas. His name is Dr. Wayne Kirkham. I have also taken my son (for a second opinion) to Henry Carder (he works his pediatric patients out of Children's Hospital but has his office near Presby Dallas).

My daughter had her tonsils out when she was in kindergarten. We used a doc in Plano. We did experience some complications, but had nothing to do with the doctor (was not one of the ones mentioned above).

Having them removed did seem to resolve a lot of medical issues for her.
