So my son came home from school yesterday saying his tummy stings. He was not hungrey, and went to sleep, which is so not like him, he is a hyper active kid. Later on he ate apple sause and cheese pizza and a pistachio ice cream. an hour later he vomited up all his food. We showered him off, and he was back to playing. He slept well, and this mornig his appitite is back, he is active, and hyper, watching tv, runnnig around, and he says he feel all better. SO is this a stomach bug? I read the symptoms and it says vomiting diarriah, fever, dehydration and fatigue and last for up to 10 days. He only had a fever after school of 99.8, and it went away with Tylonal. He threw up once, and no other symptoms. I do not want to take him to his aunt's house if it was a stomach bug because I don't want to infect her kids. But if this is something else like food poisonning, well, I just am cluelss. Please let me know your opinions.

What can I do next?

I don't think that it's a virus, but would still take precautions againest being around other kids. Sometimes kids just throw up because of an upset stomach.

Hi Lysa,
My son did almost the exact same thing a few night ago, except he had not eaten dinner. Woke at 11:30 saying his tummy hurt, threw up twice in one hour (milk-barf: blech!); slept through the rest of the night. Was himself the next day, but didn't eat much.

Food poisoning isn't like that, so my hubby and I wondered if he had some really minor stomach flu. We are just thankful it wasn't worse.

there has been this 24 hr stomach bug that causes almost no fever, a few loose stools, and maybe vomiting. so i say it is a stomach bug and you should keep him home symptom free for 24 hrs. then he can join the rest of the world :)

My son did the same thing yesterday, Saturday. He vomited on the soccer field after complaining that morning of stomach ache and not eating any breakfast. He had no fever so that is why we went to soccer. I figured it was just something he ate the night before. He ended up coming home and sleeping most of the day and night away. This morning he is back to himself for the most part. He still isn't sure about food but did eat. He says his taste buds aren't back to normal. He is energetic though. Spoke with a doctor friend and she told me it was probably a virus especially since he had no fever. 24 hour type of thing. I'm going to watch him closely today but I'm thinking it was just the 24 hour bug.

We call that the 24-hour stomach bug here. I would follow up with a visit to his pediatrician though just to be safe. The first time that happened to me I panicked. It was due to over-playing at school and super excited about a weekend event. Rest and BRAT diet for the first twenty four hours has kept the vomiting away. I would suggest trying to keep him calm but being that he's a hyper/spirited child, that might not be an option. Just keep an eye out for any further outbreaks but I would guess he'll be fine.

(BRAT = Bananas, Rice, Apple Sauce, Toast/Tea. Sometimes I'll let my child have yogurt if she wants.)

My son had the same thing I think. It was a stomach bug. He was also playing the whole time but with extra long naps. He kept vomiting until I changed his food. Bananas, bread, and yogurt. Also no juice just Gatorade, because he won't drink Pedilite. The vomiting stoped after 2 days. Then he was fine for a few day but then came the darriah. He is still in diapers so his bottom got really sore. We put Aquaphor on him after each diaper change so it would not stick, it was very helpful. Good luck I hope he feels better soon. He also had no fever.

Has he been stuffed up? Our oldest had bad allergies as a child and would do that all of the time. He would have post nasal drip and it would make him sick to his stomach. He would run a low grade fever then throw up, for lack of a better term it would consist of a lot of snot. The fever would then break and he would be fine.

There IS a stomach virus going around. Our doc told us about it last month, but I have had 4 co-workers out this week, and 2 of them said their whole family ended up getting it. There were probably more, but people don't like to talk about diarrhea & vomitting at work!). Sounds like he had a mild case. It seems some people get it for 3 days & some for 24 hrs. Good luck.

I would no it's not food poisoning , he would be so much worse and throwing up alot. It could have been a stomach bug that didn't actually get a proper grip , the body can sometimes fight these things off before they take a proper hold.

Yep--it hit our house too. I was puking and RUNNING to the bathroom for 3+ days. My son puked O. morning, stayed hoe from school and was otherwise symptom-free for the rest of the day & was fine.

We just went thru this around here. My son was sick just like yours and all of a sudden better and then a few days later he was sick again this time for a few days. I would say hold off on the visits. The CDC website says the tummy bug going around right now you are still pretty contagious for 3 days after symptoms disappear and you can still shed the virus for up to 2 weeks so be very diligent about handwashing and disinfecting things around the house.
