Stocking Stuffers for 9 Year Old Boy

I have lots of stocking stuffer ideas for my younger kids but can't think of much for my 9 yo DS. I got him a fleece scarf and some hand warmers for at the ski hill but I am kind of stuck on more ideas. Anyone have any ideas? He does not have a need for an itunes card so that is out. I usually reserve the stocking for gifts that are less expensive (around 5 dollars).

What can I do next?

Would he like the hand/mind puzzles like the Rubik's cube? Is he into nature? Go to the Bass Pro Shop website, they have all kinds of little trinkets for kids to play with that are nature/science related.

Bookstore gift card.
Little snacks that he enjoys.
Get "samples" of stuff from stores... this would then be "free."
ie: cologne, toothpaste, things like that.
a Toothbrush.
Underwear
Dental Floss
Breath mints

Hand paint a rock for him, with the words "I love you always..." on it. To me, this would be so special. He can use it as a paper weight. Use a "Sharpie" pen to write the words on it, then it is permanent ink. He's a Tween now, and it will always remind him that you are his Mommy and he is your special son. Oh and write the date/year on it too. Maybe do that for all your kids???

I have a daughter that is 10, and I did that for her once, painted a rock for her. She LOVED it. Its very sentimental for her.

This is a tad more expensive: but what about a photo ornament??? I do this for my kids every year, since they were babies, and now our tree is filled with their yearly photo ornament. It is REAL special to them, it shows how they grow/change every year, and they LOVE It. I used to do it via the Kodak website, but I don't know if Kodak still has this. But Walmart, has it:

Other stores like Walgreens, or Snapfish has photo ornaments too.
Or maybe even Costco.

I like those Lego minipacks. Useful items like Chapstik and mind bogglers (rings and links and magic tricks). It's also nice to keep the kids busy in the morning.

Series 8 minifigures from Lego. Small flashlight. Comic book. My son loves scented markers. The small K'Nex sets (they have ones that just make one little vehicle).

My son loved flashlights of all kinds. He loved camping items as well. It was always a hit when I put candy in there. I used to put in a new ball cap once in awhile. I have put BB's for his competition shooting. Snack items I won't usually buy because they are to expensive. Duck tape, just in case you want to make a wallet. There is camo duck tape now. Books, especially the kind that has mindless trivia. He love the one I got him that was on the lines of every thing boys need to know. We are Catholic so I usually put in a new Saint card. I try to find unusual ones.

I have an 11 year old, so I have to think about what I'm doing for his stocking stuffer too. How about-

A small book or magazine rolled up
headphones or ear buds
Candy or gum (my son loves gum)
favorite snack
game card
somebody said flashlight!

It depends on what his interests are. I can think of many things that will fit into a stocking: those small cars, Legos figures ($2.99, I think), a pack of cards or a card game, drawing pencils if he's into that, little army figures if he's into that, ski goggles (they probably cost more than $5, though!), chapstick or sunblock for when he's skiing, a tiny wind-up toy, a pack of gum, a small book, a favorite candy bar that he almost never gets because it's not healthy, a "gift certificate" for ice cream after New Year's.
