Stinky Dog

We have an old basset hound we adopted 5 years ago. She has always had a body odor problem. With all this cold weather, she is not outside so much, and my house starts to smell like dog.

Can anyone advise me of a really good odor control dog shampoo, or tell me whether this is maybe a skin problem that causes her to smell. Maybe its the kibble and bits she eats, but that is the only dog food she likes!

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hope everyone has great holiday season!

F.

Yep, our schnauzer would get yeasty ear infections that smelled AWFUL. And I have also heard the thing about getting anal glands expressed regularly too.

Our schnauzer would also get dry skin that sometimes got infected (and smelly!) when he scratched, so we bathed him with oatmeal shampoo and that helped a lot.

We also have a basset!

They tend to have several things that can cause stinkiness... first check her ears, next check her feet (in between her toes), both places can get infected and can get yeast infections. Lastly, and this is pretty gross, check her bottom. Bassets are prone to build up in their anal glands which can smell REALLY bad. She might have to have her anal glands expressed by your vet. Our dog has to have this done every 2 months or so.

If the odor is just the regular "dog smell," maybe try taking her to a groomer once every 1-2 months. I'm not sure where you live, but we take our dog to Groomingdales, it's at about 77th & Quivira in Shawnee, and usually costs about $25-30. They are great, she LOVES going there and always comes home smelling fresh & clean.

Hi,
We have a cocker spaniel, who had this problem too.I would give him a bath and he would still stink. I asked the veterinarian about it and his problem ended up being his ears. He gave me some ear solution to put in his ears once a week. I just put several drops in , and massage his ears and wipe with a towel. Our dog NO longer smells! I would have never guessed it was that. I would definately ask your vet and see what they say. They can hopefully get to the bottom of it for you.
good luck,
T.

Bassets have oily skin, that is causing the odor smell. You can find shampoos designed for oily skin, helping to cut down on the smell. Also regular brushing will help.

As the other mom said check her ears, I have a hound dog and have to wash his ears out once a week. I use 800petmeds brand of ear cleaner.

hi F.! i know this sounds funny but washing your dog in DAWN dishwashing liquid soap helps with the odor (and also fleas)...and wiping your dog down with a dryer sheet can help too. little home remedies i've heard about. i have a dog myself and my ex-husband owns a pet store so that's how i found out. it seems to help pretty well. the ears could be the other problem as the other women have said. i know that a dogs' ears can smell up an entire community! haha good luck to you and i hope this helps a little!

Hi F.,

I am a mobile groomer and haven't met a basset that hasn't stunk. They are so low to the ground and they pick up every stinky thing, plus if they get wet and don't dry off very good they stink badly. Kinda like a shar pei they get everything in their wrinkles and if it's not dried off very well they can get yeast infections really easy. I have to bathe the basset every other week for one of my clients. I don't have a remedy, sorry, but maybe keep her washed regularly and very dry when you wash her.
