Stinky Baby - Houston,TX

My 3month old has the worst BO! We bathe him every day, but he just sweats so much regardless of how we dress him. Then if we have him completely naked so he's not so hot, his poor little hands & feet are freezing! Any ideas??

I would love for our little guy to have that lovely baby smell, but he just stinks like my bros did when they were teenagers!

UPDATE: WOW! I did not expect so many answers so soon! He's a really sweaty baby, so that's definitely the smell. My hubby was home with him yesterday & said when he changed him in the morning, he had a major sweat ring on his onesie.

We will definitely see about checking in with the pedi regarding his endocrine system... I kept thinking this wasn't normal, but just wasn't thinking through the whole thing- it's been a very exhausting week at work so by the time I get home, my brain's just not completely functioning.

What can I do next?

What does he smell like? You said BO - like sweaty sports or like old food.

Do you breast feed - are you eating garlic or other smelly foods?

Is his dad sneaking his old socks into the crib to make you crazy? (couldn't resist the joke)

This is odd - I would keep him warm and look at what he is eating. If it is a formula - you may want to switch to an organic formula without chemicals.

Look for chemicals in his environment that he could be reacting to.

I'd agree that it's really uncommon for a baby to have BO. You may want to call the pediatrician to find out what could be the cause as it could be medical vs. how you're cleaning, clothing, etc.

You can usually call into a pediatrician's office and at least speak with a triage nurse who can offer some guidance.

Are you washing in between the folds of his skin in his neck, armpits, thighs, diaper area, etc? A lot of moms overlook this and the smell gets BAD! If you haven't, try that now and your baby should be smelling rosy. I dont think babies get BO this early ;p

Hi D.! If it is a true body odor smell, I would take him to the doctor and see if all is well with his endocrine system. Excessive sweating in an infant is not normal.

Hopefully you can get that lovely baby smell back!

Make sure you check everyfold and skin, my son was a sweatly little thing, but he used to get yeast infection under his chin. I felt like the worst mommy ever. But really that boy had folds of skin, I thought I knew them all, but apparently not. he would also get a bit behind his knees.

You should talk to your pediatrician for a couple of reasons, first to rule out a more serious problem such as your child's hormones/endocrine system are out of whack but it also could very likely be a form of yeast infection. Last summer, when my daughter was very little I noticed that she would smell awful. Then when washing her, I noticed that her neck in the folds was raw looking. I asked her dr. about it at the next appointment and was told it was what she called "baby no-neck syndrome" which just meant that because babies have a very short neck if they do sweat it doesn't really get exposed to air to dry and and can set up the conditions for an over growth of yeast. It's very common in warm climates. The dr. prescribed nystatin and it cleared up quickly. However, it did come back a couple of times until it got cooler and she grew enough for air to circulate around her neck.

Try changing soap. Maybe the baby wash isn't strong enough for him. Dove is gentle for baby's, maybe try that

I didn't read all the posts but I wanted to tell you this happened to a good friend of mine. It was plain ole BO and the doctor said not to worry and put anti-perspirant on him. I have a product that is gentle. I would suggest you print out the label and show your doctor to be sure it is appropriate for such a young child.
