Spray Tans - Safe When Pregnant or Not?

I am going out of state to a wedding next week. I was thinking about getting a spray tan because I am so glowing white. I am wondering if it is safe to do while being pregnant. I just started my second trimester. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

What can I do next?

Have you ever done this before? I did it ONCE and it looked beautifulland would do it again if I could. But I had an allergic reaction and broke out in a rash. I did it before going on a summer vacation and then had a rash the whole time. The tan looked great, but I had little bumps and it itched constantly. I now use the Sally Hansen spray on color - it doesn't have any "self tanning" chemicals in it, just color that washes off. It works pretty good. Good luck!

I dont know about how it might affect the baby, but if I were you I wouldnt do it. Anything you put on your skin can seep through and get into your blood stream and then into the babies blood stream. Although Im sure the risks are low...you are creating a life...I wouldnt risk it. Thats just my opinion.

J., I did spray tan with my last pregnancy, but I have a friend who does it for a living, so she came to my house and airbrushed me, soo I wasn't in one of those booths breathing all thise chemicals. I think its fine, but always check with your doctor.

If a salon is willing to do it, then they really are not looking out for the best of you and your child!! Just my opinion. There are no studies that have shown what could happen to your baby. Your pregnant... your beautiful with or without a tan!! With my first child, I learned I was pregnant while planning our wedding. I was less than 10 weeks when we actually got married but thought about getting a spray tan. When I called some salon's they said they wouldn't do it. After 2 children, looking back... why risk anything that may harm your child?!!??! Unfortunately we have to sacrafice several things when pregnant but when you have that heathly baby in your arms... who cares??!
Good luck!

I would think that it shuld be fine as it is only "affecting" the outer layers of your skin. I say, to be on the safe side, ask your OBGYN.

Hi J.,

Yes, (certain) spray tans are safe during pregnancy. Check to make sure that the DHA activating agent, or spray tan being used is vegan, preferably made of cane, beat or raspberry sugar. Second, make sure that you're not sprayed above 7 psi. Remember, your tan should last 7 to 10 days. Also, prep for your spray tan. Wax 3 or 4 days before, shower at least two hours before, don't apply any moisturizers, creams, oils, etc or any deodorant prior to your spray tan application. Wear dark, loose fitting clothes and don't shower or perform rigorous exercise for 5 to 7 hours after the tan is applied.
If you need a certified spray tan applicator, call Dinair Airbrush Make Up in North Hollywood, they can refer someone in your area.

Yikes! Why risk it? You would basically be spraying chemicals all over your body. Your skin is a living thing! Go white and pregnant and proud of it.

Super question!!

During my pregnancy, I asked my OB/GYN and she said most 'tanning' places refuse you due to liability issues, because there is no evidence medically that it can or can't harm your baby.

If you read the bottles of OTC spray tan, there are no warning for pregnant women but, some do have warning about kids.

My OB/GYN said if I could go without it, that would be best but if I had to she said to use a face mask while doing it and check the contents or label for warnings about inhalants....but, of course to be on the safe side, I didn't do it. No one really cared about my pastiness and really just focused on my belly anyway. I would check with your doctor, and make sure there isn't any NEW evidence or research...things change all the time.

Have fun at the wedding!

J., I spray tanned through my first pregnancy. I also had a person do it, not a booth. I asked my dr. and I asked the lady who sprayed me and both said it was fine. You need to feel good about you too. Go for it!

Ask your OB/GYN.
ALso, the tanning salons MAY have certain "rules" pertaining to pregnant women... ask them.

Good luck,

I did airbrush tanning throughout my whole pregnancy and my doctor was fine with it. It's a heck of a lot better than those tanning beds!
If you're hesitant, you can get a spray tan in a bottle (I think by Sally Hansen) and just spray your legs.
Have fun at the wedding!

J.,

I don't know for sure (so ask your doc), but I would say no spray tan. It is a chemical and it could potentially be aborbed by your baby. Everyone will think you're beautiful - even without a tan.
