Sprained Ankle

It has been about 7 weeks since I sprained my ankle. I had a bad run in with a trampoline and caused myself to have a severe inversion sprain. My question is does it really take this long for it to heal? I still have a dull pain in my ankle. The ankle gets very tired and has some swelling. By the end of the day I am frustrated that I am still limping around on my foot. Everyone I have talked with says it just takes along time for sprains to heal, and I understand that-but how long it a long time? I really would like to start running again, but I am afraid that I will set myself back even further. Any advice?

What can I do next?

I'm so sorry you're going through this. It is definitely tough. I agree with the other responses that if you didn't, you need to see an orthopedic surgeon.

Also, sometimes it takes a while for our bodies to heal. I twisted my ankle so bad last year I broke my leg. I was devastated when they told me it would be 3 months to heal- at just over a year later, it's finally getting completely back to normal and my ankel still swells once in a while. As someone else said, it makes a big difference too if you've kept your weight off of it because then there's no bloodflow to help with the healing, but if you work it too much then you can cause further damage. It's quite a situation! Best to talk to a doc and be sure all is okay.

Hope you're feeling better soon!

Get it re-checked, preferably by an orthopedic surgeon. You could have a something that hasn't healed correctly or have further damage.

Hi. I'm an Athletic Trainer so hopefully I can help. 1st of all, did you go to the doctor? Did you see an orthopedic? Did they take an xray? If the answer to these is yes, how severe did they say the sprain was? If it has been over 7 weeks, there was probably either a very severe sprain or further damage that possibly wasn't discovered (especially if you didn't see an ortho or have xrays). It's hard to give you the best advice without knowing a little more so feel free to email me. I'd be glad to help.

A note about doctors... if you did see one and the sprain was that severe, 2 things should have happened. They should have referred you to an orthopedic and/or ordered physical therapy for you.

One other thing, if you were on crutches for an extended period of non-weight bearing, that sometimes actually can prolong the healing time. I know, sounds weird. :) Please email me - I'll answer any questions I can. Hope you feel better soon.

I sprained my ankle back in middle or high school (gosh, it's been so long, I can't remember!) and I was on crutches for a couple of weeks and then limped around for another couple of months. It took about 9-10 weeks for me to get back to normal (and I was a youngin that supposedly heals faster than an adult) and actually, my ankle has never been the same. I sprained it again in college and I turn my ankle a lot even now. Unfortunately, unless you can stay off of it and keep it up for most of the day (as a stay at home mom of 2 kids, I doubt you have time for that), you're going to have swelling for awhile, especially with such a bad sprain. I hate to be the bearer of bad news. I'm sorry it's still hurting you and I hope it gets better soon!

According to this site, most ankle sprains take about 6 weeks to heal, but can take up to 4 months depending on severity. Here's a link to the site, and they have some do's and don'ts as well! Hope that helps!
