Spitting up Non Stop

Ok, so my son is 7 months (almost) - I have talked to 2 different pediatricians and am pulling my hair out - my son spits up all the time - not a little - he spits up a lot and then eats again. It is killing me. I have tried every formula solf at quality whole foods and all the normal one's sold at the store. My pediatrician has been no help - he just said keep trying and gave me another sample can of something else. I have tried 26 different formulas! He does not spit up his solid food, he does not spit up pedilyte or juice, just formula (Milk, soy, goat, etc)

I am almost considering milk at the suggestion of my fathers roommate, but am hesitant. Any ideas? HELP! I can not afford to keep trying formulas at $15 up to $40 a can!!!!

REVISED - I have also been putting cereal (rice) in his bottle since 3 weeks old. He was eating a full 8 oz bottle every hour at that point when my aunt put him on it to help cut down his consumption. Since then he eats less.

I have tried every bottle on the market - every formula that I can find, asked about acid reflux (been told he "does not have it" though no tests were done), burped with every ounce, half ounce, cut feedings to 1 ounce at a time every few minutes, sat up, laid down, blah blah blah...

It really is hard being a mom with noone to turn to to ask questions like this.

Based off the responses does anyone have suggestions for a pediatrician? He is going to Dr. Downey and has also seen Dr. Burford for this as well. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So, I took my son to the doctor, again (it is a joke these days), and demanded (nicely) to see another doctor for a second opinion, and was told "We do not feel your son has acid reflux." When I asked for a referal to a specialist, I was told it was "unneccasary and cruel to put my son through those tests." I walked out!

So, I have an appointment tomorrow aith a different doctor (I have an HMO so I need the referral). The doctor is actually my docotr, but when I called and explained the situation she said she would write the referral. I will keep you all posted - thank you for the advice!

My son spit up so much when he was a baby. The doctor determined it was acid reflux and said he would grow out of it and he did. I believe he was 8 or 9 months old. But at the time, it was terrible. I would change his outfit 6-7 times a day cause it was so bad. My greatest concern was him not getting enough to eat, but the doc said that no matter how much he spit back up, he still kept some down. Don't know if this helps, but hang in there.

Hi T.,

My little guy had the same problem. It was acid reflux. I had tried everything, different formulas etc. When he eats solids he is fine, but when he has is formula is when the spitting up begins... if I were you I would demand the doctor to do the test, or get a second opinion. Because if it is acid reflux it can be doing damage and it will be much better on him to get it taken care of now.

Hello I would push the doctors to test him for the acid reflux. My son who is now 4 sipt up all the time and but was able to keep down some soild foods. I did the samething with all the formulas and that didn't help. He was able to drink a mexican rice milk. It starts with a "H" I am sorry that I don't know the name at this time i will find out for you and respond with that as soon as posible. He loved it and kept it down better than any other formula and the doctors said that it had everything in it that he needed. After a few months on that I started to give him milk and he did just fine. Good luck

Hi there. OKay. Dr Hadeed is AWSOME! Love him. He is in Clackamas. My son spit up too with every formula except Similac with iron. The cheapest stuff on the market. The soy stuff made him sicker than a dog. Breast milk worked best, but more solids you give him, the less milk he needs. Also, try givng him some water to help settle his stomach. If you do try milk, get whole milk and the organic kind. My son gets VERY CONSTIPATED with a bunch though. Which is even worse than spitting up. Make sure is he upright right after each feeding too and not laying down. At least for 15 minutes. It's hell, but he does get over it. At about 10 months, Ryan quit spitting up. Now, he never does. Good luck!

Another baby at my kiddos daycare had the same problem, and his mother felt the same way. Our daycare provider said it might be acid reflux, and when she asked her pediatrician, telling him what he should have told her, it turned out to be just that. He then prescribed some kind of small medication and since the little guy has not had as many problems, so bring it up to your pedi.

As for starting him on milk I too started my littl boy on the whole milk a little early, but not 7 mos. I believe he was about 10 mos. when I started mixing his formula with whole milk and then at 11 mos. increased it to 1/2 formula and 1/2 milk and by the end of the 11 month, he was on straight whole milk.

I was going to ask if he's been tested for reflux. And then I'd be shocked that two different peds hadn't thought of that yet!

Our pediatrican gave me an at home test, to see if DDs problems were related to reflux or not (he was NOT a fan of the evasive GI testing that some like to do). He said to give them 1/2 tsp of REGULAR strength malox after a nursing session/bottle. If no vomiting occurs, it's reflux. If they still vomit, it's not reflux.

Aside from that, has he ever been tested for dairy allergies? Generally, if they are allergic to dairy, they are also allergic to soy (as they have very similar protein strings).

Good luck... and honestly, I'd be looking for peds that are a little more experienced.

Good Morning T.~
I started each of my boys on regular vitamin D cows milk at 6 months old. They are fine and have no problems. Of course peds will tell you not too. However if you think back to our great granparents and the ones before them. There wasnt formula; its was breast, goat or cow. Doctors seem to forget that part. You have done excellent trying everything else. It certainly cant hurt. Using the Vitamin D is good as to it has lots of good stuff in it.

Good Luck!

I am not a doctor or anything but it sounds to me like your son is trying to wean himself off of the formula.I would say just try to go a day without giving him formula. Try giving him his solid food and juice and if he does not seem to cry about no formula then I would say he just doesn't want it anymore. Good luck!

One quick search on the internet got this hit. I haven't scanned the replies, so I don't know if I am repeating advice you have already gotten, but this website deals with what seems to be a textbook case in your son. The biggest thing to examine is weight gain and disposition. Is he failing to thrive(gain weight according to general infant health guidelines) as a result and is he chronically fussy.

Also, I think you could change to milk from formula. Try it for a day or two. If it doesn't help, you know it isn't what he is ingesting. It won't hurt him, and it may eliminate a potential cause without the expense of a visit to the pediatrician.

http://pediatrics.about.com/od/weeklyquestion/a/04_spitti...

I would recommend that you keep him well hydrated (water, not juice) to deal with any acid he may be burping up in his throat. That can cause irritation and may contribute to his discomfort.
Best of luck.

I also use to see Dr. Downey and although I don't think that there is anything wrong with him I just felt like I wasn't getting the attention I needed, he just seemed alittle over worked. I have a wonderful pediatrician off of Trop. and eastern. It is a Husband and wife team and they just frought in a third Dr. whom of seen on a recent visit and I liked her as well. It is a small practice so you get better one on one time, you never feel rushed. I started to go to them when my son was 7months old and my daughter was 4. Sean was suffering from ear infections at the time (seeing ur ped) and if Dr. Oshiro hadn't suggusted the tubes for him he could have been deaf. It was the worst case they had ever seen. Has for my daughter she suffers from asthma and was always in the hospital but since we have been seeing Dr. Oshiro she has only been in twice. I had flash backs when I read your problem. My son used to do that so much that his father if he was off to work he couldn't pick him up cause we knew that he would throw up as soon as you picked him up. What I found out is (as unmedical as I can) they have like a muscle in there belly and if he passes that line (muscle) when they move or cough or laugh or anything the milk will go above that line and come up. I started giving my son just a tad bit of cereal in his bottle to make the milk a little heavier and split his bottles more that way he had time to digest. Try that hope it works...

Dear T.,
I am not a doctor however I have five children. My 2nd to the youngest son had a protein allergy to milk and at first they were unsure what was wrong with him. Constantly spitting up, and other things. We had to have him tested for the protien allergy. The only thing that we found for formula that work was Nutromingen. I'm sure I spelled it wrong. He was on that until he was 15 months old. Then we had to put him on Sun Soy milk. He no longer has a problem with milk. I would ask your doctor about a protein allergy.

Have you mentioned to your ped that you started your kiddo on rice cereal when he was three weeks old? Not sure if that has anything to do with his spitting up but I understand that there is a possibility of creating food allergies if you start an infant on solids too soon. Every baby is different of course but 8 oz. of formula with cereal in it every hour seems like an awful lot for a three week old baby. I'm in Oregon so no advice for a ped, but you should definitely keep looking for a new one until you find someone who will address the spitting up issue. It takes babies a while to get used to new formulas and foods. If you are switching formulas too often without letting your baby get used to the change that might be part of the problem. Also, are you sure he's not getting too much formula??? Babies who are too full spit up a lot. I went through that with my first child (I have three). The sitter was putting too much formula in his bottle and he would projectile spit up afterwards. It was awful. And of course, once they barf it all out they are immediately hungry again. As for the cows mile, you need to do what you need to do, but I strongly recommend that you not give your infant cows milk. Good luck.

When my daughter was about 6 mos old the formula just didn't satiate her appetite, so we put more rice cereal in her bottle...making it thicker...and cut a bigger hole in the bottle. She never spit up after that...but it was tough to get her to take JUST formula again! She had to have that rice cereal in it. Good luck to you...and NO MILK! Too h*** o* tiny tummies to digest. Humans were really never meant to drink animal milk. Oh, and as far as formula goes, The Good Start brand is AWESOME and very inexpensive. It is so good on their systems and easy for them to digest...may alleviate some of the spit-up issues.

I would not take the advice to put him on cow's milk. It does not have the nutritional value and should not be given until after 1 year.

Have you tried mixing the infant rice cereal with his formula. You will have to get a nipple with a large opening to accomidate the mixture, but the thickness can help it stay down. I would try a scoop of cereal per scoop of formula, and go from there.

Also you need to note that a switch in formula can cause some problems in and of its self. You'll need to try it, but have some patience to see the effect, it may not be immediate, and most likely won't be immediate.

If you suspect acid reflux, make sure that he eats sitting up and then keep him sitting up for about 45 mins after he eats. You can use a bouncey chair, but I wouldn't recommend a swing.

I hope that helps.

If there's one thing I can't stand, it's a doctor that blows me off. You know your son better than any doctor, and you know what is normal. This spitting up is obviously not normal. My nephew also had the very same symptoms you described, and his doctor diagnosed him with acid reflux. If your doctor refuses to do anything about this problem, then seek advice from another doctor. You are the only one who can advocate for your child, and the only one who is able to report medical problems. Sometimes you have to be pushy- and being pushy can be a good thing. Stand up for your baby, Momma! I do not take my children to a pediatrician. They see a family practitioner, and she is the most compassionate and caring doctor I have ever known. I used to take them to a busy pediatric office, and I too got the run-around, and blown off, like I didn't know what I was talking about. But since I ahve switched doctors, I feel like my kid's doctor really listens to me. She has the attitude of:"You're the mother, and I trust your judgement". A simple switcheroo may be all you need. Good luck!!

My son spit up non stop too! My pediatrician put him on Infamil AR. This thicker formula helped cut back on him spitting up so much. I see that you have tried putting cereal in his formula and it did not help. The AR stands for added rice, if you have not tried this formula yet maybe it will help. Also I breast fed for 4 months and when I switched to bottle I did not realize that it was different. With a bottle you cant let the baby drink it all down at once, you have to give breaks. Babies dont realize that they cant drink it all down within a couple of minutes. It is up to you to take it away every couple of sips otherwise they will get too much at once it will all come back up. Spit up smells great, doesint it? haha!
Hopefully some of this will help,

So, my question is...is this your first child? If it is, there is a high percentage of first born boy infants who have a hard time with spitting up, and it can be projectile. This has nothing to do with the formula that your child is eating. It only has to do with his stomach and digestion. My son was the same way. If he is the first child, he is not fully digesting his food, so when he is fed again, it is sitting on top of the formula already in his stomach and he gets too full and then spits up. It took my son a long time to grow out of it, but I worried as you did and tried switching formulas...I got tired of changing his clothes and mine about 10+ times a day. Not only that, but he was always crying as if he was gassy or in pain...that too passed with time, again with no help from the doctors. Just try feeding him smaller amounts or trying to space his feedings more. There is nothing wrong with him, and although it is frustrating he will grow out of it. Don't be surprised if you see remnants of it as he gets older. My son is now seven and if he eats too quickly he still ends up throwing up. The doctors are never of any help. Honestly, I didn't get an answer until I took my Medical Terminology class over the summer. I hope this helps and gives you a little peace of mind. Oh, and as far as formula....we just used the Enfamil with Iron...a yellow and white can. It's like $25 for the large cans.

This is deja vu for me. I kept telling the doctors he was spitting up a lot and they just said it was normal. The thing is is that it was everything he ate. Don't try milk yet. His little tummy may not be able to handle breaking it down yet. We started cereal and rice at about 3 weeks and that helped and lessened the frequency of the feedings. My son eventually outgrew this stage of spitting up everything at about 4-5 months. He still spit up a little and a lot if we were playing too rough. Your son may have an epiglottis issue. You know best; don't let doctors tell you otherwise. If you feel that there is something more here, please keep trying. Ask the doctor to do an epliglottis test. We also tried Zantac, but it made him so fussy. He just wasn't a happy baby on it so we quit after a couple weeks. I have found many answers on www.webmd.com. Best of luck to you.

I had this problem with my son as well. I breasfed and then used formula. He spit up both. You mentioned that he was eating an 8oz bottle every hour? That seems like alot. It sounds like you may be feeding him too often, babies love to suck and they don't know how to tell you 'no', so they eat and spit up if they have had too much.
What helped us was to feed him every 2 1/2 to 3 hours. You may have to initially use a little pedialyte to help between feedings, but once you get him on a schedule you won't need it. If you looking for a good pediatrician on the west side Dr.Weiner at Desert Pediatrics is great.

It's more common for boys to have reflux problems than girls. The spitting up may have absolutely nothing to do with formula or milk or whatever you put in him. The problem might be in his throat and stomach. A physcial thing. This is, in fact, so common, that your pediatrician should have it on the forefront of their mind when dealing with a boy baby and the symptoms you've described.

My experience with this: When we were living up at Doernbecher my son underwent a G-tube surgery because of the sever nausia assiciated with chemotherapy. He was so sick that he wouldn't allow anything to pass through his lips so he was dying of malnutrition. In discussion with the Doctors about his reactions to food and medicine, we discussed whether he was having a problem with nausia or a problem with the way his throat was working to hold the food down and into his tummy. They told me about an operation that can be done in throat to prevent vomiting (spitting up). With that operation, the person's body can actually contract to vomit or spit up over and over and over again, but with this operation... it prevents the food from comming out. This is the same operation that they commonly do to baby boys with the reflux problem. What they due is pinch the tube to the stomach a little tighter so that the food can't come back out, no matter how much their body contracts for the spitting up.

But, with Hunter we decided to do as little as we had to with him. They placed the G-tube and we pumped only 1 ounce of formula into him per hour, 24 hours a day. If even that small amount of formula wouldn't stay down, then we would consider the other surgery to pinch his stomach to make the food stay in it. Unfortunately, Hunter was still nausiated even with the small dose of food, sometimes more often than others and he ended up on IV nutrition... he was even too sick and unstable for the second operation. Then, he bounced back (praise God) so miraculously... that the operation was not neccessary.

I completely understand how alone and powerless you must feel, screaming out to Doctors to "figure this out" and they just breeze over your complaints. But, you are the one living it... and seeing the struggle that your son has. I just encourage you to stay up in their face about it. Keep describing symptoms to them. You are the most important part in sustaining his life & THE QUALITY OF IT. It's a very important thing for your son to have his baby days, playing and feeling good, not spitting up w/ an empty weak stomach all the time. You keep advocating for him and let them know that you are willing to do whatever it takes.

By the way, I even did speak to another mom while up at the hospital who did have a baby boy with the spitting up problem. After a year of it, the Docs finally did the operation on him. I just remember her saying, that after a while they just got used to the smell of spit up on the carpet. She said that the house stunk...but, that's just how he played. He would crawl around to play, and vomit everywhere spitting up on just about everything. They figured they'd just get new carpeting when he grew out of it... if no one was going to listen to her. I don't know if you can relate at all. If this sounds like you, I'd talk to the Doc about maybe it NOT being a formula problem.

God Bless, YM

Have you tried breast milk? Obviously, after 7 months your own is not an option (unless you are willing to go on some hormones, ugh) , but there is a breast milk bank in the west somewhere from which, I think, you can order. It is pasturized and tested, totally safe. If you call Primary Children's medical ctr. in Salt Lake, they may be able to help. Good luck!

Hi Tawney,

I agree with almost everything that has been recommended so far. I work with WIC and have done so for 12 years. Though I am not a doctor, it does sound like reflux. I have vast experience w/ my 8 year old. She still needs to be medicated to this day.

What is gerd or acid reflux? Gerd stands for ....gastrointestional esophagial reflux disease. This basically means that a muscle that is in our throat is immature and not working properly. It is called the spixter muscle. As the foods grow thicker the spitting up will decrease. I definately feel that formula should continue until 1 years old. Cows milk doesn't have the vitamins (especially iron) and can cause stomach bleeding if introduced to soon. With the stomach bleeding and lack of iron sources, that will put your child at risk of low iron or anemia.
The medicine that everybody is mentioning...zantac.... it is an acid reducer. It will not stop the throwing up but will aid in making him feel more confortable. Think back to when you were pregnant and suffering heartburn. Well, that basically what reflux is. Acids and other stomach materials coming back up again. The zantac is usually only recommended if he is a fussy child. Usually we are all fussy if we do not feel well. They only have crying and colic as a form of expression. I would call your pediatrician and ask him if he has ruled out reflux?
There are medical tests that can be done for diagnosis. The first thing thta will be medically done is an upper GI. That is when the baby drinks barium amd the take xrays and watch the barrium reflux up the throat. The radioactive die is very easy to see on the films.

Another thing to keep in mind. Usually this is not considered a major (medical) concern unless the baby is not gaining weight adequately.

By 10 months my little puker was no more. I stopped the meds and at 12 months she started putting her fingers down her throat and make herself throw up. I made repeated trips to 3 pediatricians and no body felt any concern until at 15 months she was loosing weight. I was originally told I was not giving her enough attention by 2 different Doctors. When she was refusing to eat and started loosing weight I took her back to a third Doctor and he said it's reflux. I felt so stupid. How can I teach other people about reflux and not recognize the symtoms myself. Well, thats part of the reason Doctors don't treat thier own kids is because we miss alot, when they are ours. Or we diagnose the worst posssible conditions and worry until we are told otherwise. As I said she is 8 years old and we still need to medicate. She will do well for a while and then get the stomach flu, start puking and continue. She also gets what we call puke burps. She still complains that they burn and taste nasty. Another possibility with reflux if it continues....then your child has a greater risk of asthma. So thta is also something I would watch for as he grows up.
I would recommend a pediatric gastroenternologist. I would make an appointment w/ your regular pediatrician and then ask for a referral to the pediatric gastroenternologist. Do not take no for an answer. Thank the doctor for his/her opinion and get the refferal anyway. Nobody knows everything and you would n't go see a foot doctor if you were having heart problems.
As she gets older we can sometimes get away with just tums but if it continues then a medication that heals the erotion of the throat lining may be needed. A lifetime of reflux could lead to throat cancer. So if this is what it ends up being. Keep your eyes open for continuing or reoccuring symptoms.
I am in the process of scheduling an appointment for a throat scope. This will help us to know if any damage has been done to the esophagus yet. This is something she will probably have monitored all her life. At this rate if its not gone by now, then it probably won't go away for my child. But most people/infants out grow it and never bothers them again.

The thicker the foods the less throwing up. Thtas why the foods stay down and not the liquids. It also helps to keep upright in the carseat or swing or elevate the head of the matress in the crib.

I remember everybody would ask me if the way I was holding my child could increase the symptoms and my answer for them was no.... she is just going to throw up on you instead of me. I used to hold her at the hip facing outward.

If you have any other further questions, feeel free to email me apersonal message. I will let you know if I don't know an answer and what kind of doctor you are looking for.

Good luck, offer thicker foods and call the doctor again. If it is reflux then no changes in formula is going to make any difference. Changing formula's only help if you are allergic or your body can not break down the formula. Reflux will happen on everything including breastmilk. So remember the thicker the better, offer tablefoods if you have already introduced the fruits and veggies.

I haven't read through all the responses, so hopefully I'm not repeating something already said. Honestly, it sounds like his little belly is getting too full. I went through pretty much the same exact thing. My son was a bottomless pit - or so I thought. He would take a bottle anytime I offered it, and then he would promptly hoark it all up - all over me. It got to the point where we left the carpet cleaner out and at the ready because we knew the carpet was going to get re-christened....as well as me. Well, a little mom advice from others and talking to his pediatrician, we discovered he really didn't need as much as we were feeding him, but he really just enjoyed it so much he didn't know when to quit. We quit feeding a full bottle and not quite as often. He was still just as happy, and mom and dad were MUCH happier not having to clean up the object of his rejection. Oh - and he had problems with the Similac and Enfamil but did famously on the Carnation Good Starts.

Hi T.,
My son had acid reflux as an infant and just to let you know once your child gets up and moving it should go away. With our son he was 8 months old when his went away. We had went to the GI specialist at Valley Children's hospital finally at 4 months old cause our Dr thought colic and I demanded it be checked cause none of the formula worked.
We go to Dr Roldan which seems to be working out. i have also heard that Dr Suen is good too. I wish you the best, I know your pain. Hopefully this will subside for you like it did us. If it does like our son you don't have much longer to go. We were also on Nutramigen that helped a lot too. He was back on regular formula at about 9 mo and off mdeicine at 8 mo. He is now on milk and has been for about 2 1/2 months, is 13 months now.

My boy spit up alot and I found it was because I was overfeeding him. I know you said you have done 1 oz every minute. You could try 2-3 oz period until he is showing hunger signs again. Also I am sure you have been told, be sure not to play with him (jiggle, throw in air, etc) until a while after he eats.

My grandson was that way. The dr put him on something like zantac because it might be acid reflux. It helped some but he continued to spit up some but not in such copious amounts. He outgrew it. We always burped him several times during feeding and did not lay him down for an hour or so after feeding him. You can put him in a car seat.

My granddaughter, who is older, also spit up a lot and a change in formula helped her to stop completely. They tested her for allergies and learned that she was allergic to milk and soy. She used Neutragema or something like that, I think. Alternative formulas are also available through WIC if you qualify.

I strongly suggest that you not start him on cow's milk before he is a year old. It has some negative consequences. I can't remember what they are for sure but I think it's related to it not having the complete nutrition that your baby needs and that it is apt to create allergies. Check with your doctor.

Hi T.,
I know EXACTLY how you feel... My son will be 8 months on Friday and I've had the same problem. At first the doctors were telling me the same thing they are telling you which not only didn't help, but frustrated the hell out of me so I did research on my own and took it to them. My son has an extreme case of reflux...Which usually goes away when they are about a year old. I tried every formula when he first started throwing up and realized I needed to do something. At first I just gave him less formula more times a day, but that left him still hungry, then I read that in Europe mothers would thicken the milk with a little bit of cereal... i started thickening his milk and he got better, but what really helped was that i added poi to atleast one of his feeding instead of rice... I hope this helps you, I know it hurt me to watch my son suffer like that... Be Blessed and know that this is just temporary and he will grow out of it.
Sincerely,
M. S

I see you've recieved many responses. Here are 2 suggestions. My son had the same problem and my pediatrician put him on medication for acid reflux. That was not the problem. I discovered that he was lactose intolerant. He was not a formula baby, he was breastfed. Despite what people tell you about what does and does not pass through breastmilk. I can guarantee, in my case that whenever I had dairy products, he threw up. It was not just a little spit up. It was forceful and plentiful. First try lactose free, then try Nutramigin which is whey free. Give things a little time too. As with many of the other stories, my son's problems passed too.

Good luck, Peggy

I has the same problem with my daughter until she was about 10 months or so. She DID have Acid Reflux and it was very severe. We tried every kind of medicine and nothing worked. I found that Enfamil AR formula was the only thing that helped. She finally just grew out of it though. Her doctor was very good about finding out what was going on. He sent her in for tests and it was for sure Reflux.
I hope that this helps a little

HI T.,

I too went through a very similar thing when one of my daughters was about 4 months old. at first i just thought it was the time change, we went on vacation to Missouri, we lived in CA and had no idea why she kept spitting everything. when we got back we took her to the docotor's and they started her on Nutramigen, you have already tried this it is really expensive but it helped and she was only on it until she had surgery. I know it sounds harsh but she has a refulx disorder,in which her espohagus did not close up after eating causing her to throw up. Keep after your doctors dont give up, you know your baby better than they do. Oh and she stayed overnight in the hospital, i stayed with her the entire time and she got to go home the next day. she is now 13 and the problem, according to her a similar issue comes and goes, she is doing good.

Wish you all the luck,

Hi Tawyna, I live in Gresham and both of my kids go to Dr. John Calcagno in the same area as Mt. Hood Hospital (building 1, I believe). He's a great doctor with the kids and very helpful (easy on the eyes too but that's just my opinion). Dr. Fenell is also in that office and my oldest saw him when we all lived in Albany. He's the only one that stood up for me when she needed minor surgery so I recommend him too. As for spit up, my first daughter spit up so much that I actually got used to the smell of it & stopped noticing. I tried several formulas as well as the gas drops. It never fully went away while she was on formula but it did help. I can't say I'd try cow's milk yet. Have you tried smaller feedings but more often? Hope some of this helps & keep us posted.

I am a daycare provider and two of my babies have had this problem and were diagnosed with acid reflux and put on zantac. First of all, I'd switch pediatricians and then I'd ask about acid reflux. Do some research on line about it and see what you think. They can outgrow this and not be on meds anymore...it just depends on how bad they have it. Best of luck.

Something doesn't sound right. Could it be the bottle? I notice my little one will spit up if I let her drink the full bottle w/Dr. Brown. If I have her stop every 2 to 3 gulps, the spit up is less. I then slowly put her over my shoulders and burp until I hear something. Sometimes it takes awhile but it does come. If it doesn't lay her down for a moment and pick the little one back up and try burping again. It could be the way the little one is drinking the milk. If it is too fast, she might have a lot of air bubbles inside and then the big spit up comes.

Hope this helps.

I havent had a chance to read through the other responses, so this may have been said. and....I never had much of a problem with my boys spitting up when they were young. Is it possible that when he drinks a full bottle, with the cereal in it, he drinks more because its a "liquid" and then settles in his tummy like a solid and is too much? Have you tried taking out the cereal or limiting his intake? Like 2-4 ounces at a time? Have you tried changing the cereal? Hope some of this helps. Good luck mom!

Hi T., I first would like to say you are not crazy, you have been put in a really difficult situation, that you cannot control. The fact that this man does not want to be a Father to his own son is an upsetting reality, but i applaude you in staying optomistic on your situation. I do however agree on he should be finacially responsible if nothing else. I do not know where you stand spirtually but I do believe in God, and I believe in the power of prayer very much. I do not know if you even would want him to be involved at this point given his outlook on what is going on, and is unfortuntley is missing out on something spetecular. But bottom line you can not control what he wants, or what he will even do emotionally for you or your son, it sounds like you are an Indepenent Woman, and just keep your head up high cause you will do good. On the formula my son did the same thing and as i get older i believe more in homeopathic care not that i have anything aganist western medicine i just have been through so much and found i like holistic care more, so that would be my suggestion on that.
