I am seeing a lot of spiders in our house lately and this weekend I sawa few itty bitty spiders which tells me eggsd have hatched. We have four dogs an a 15 month old so I am hesitant to use chemicals. I put spider traps down (the glue boards) this weekend, but am wondering if anyone can recommend anything else to use.

Thank you for all the responses. A friend is bringing me a bunch of hedge apples today. I hope they work!

We went with a company called Remedy Pest Control. Its safe around animals and children. I cant seem to find the website or their phone number, you can look it up in the phonebook. It does work. We had ants and spiders and dont see any, but from time to time I will see and ant or spider and its guaranteed, they will come back in and spray if needed.

you could call a local "pest" company- the have many chemicals that are kid safe. I use a company and it runs about $69.00 to spray in and out the house- we have no spiders and have lived in our home for a little over 2 years.

Get some hedge apples and put one in each room in a place where your child won't get ahold of them. These really do work, and will keep the spiders away for up to 3 months.
If you can get enough of them, put some around the foundation of your house as well, and in your basement and attic. One per room usually works fine.
They are not toxic to humans, though they will cause vomiting if eaten. Some people get a rash from touching them, so you do want to keep them out of children's reach. Pets won't bother them. Set them on a piece of foil or plastic, as some will get a bit sticky.

J.:

OUr neighbors had problems with Spiders, and they sprayed the outside of their house (I don't know what they sprayed it with), and that seemed to take care of the problem indoors. I think they went to Home Depot, or Lowes, and talke to someone there.

I would for sure get rid of any cardboard boxes, like what your pop comes in, and anything else like that. C./____@____.com

One of the best things I've found to get rid of spiders is my cat. No, seriously...she loves to play with them (and ew, eat them). I had a similar problem when I moved into my current apartment a year ago, and haven't had any problems once she noticed them!

We use Terminex to come spray our house. I have 2 small children and a dog. They use a chemical that is safe around all of them. The reason I know this for sure, is because my mom actually works for them. When they came out the first time I was hesitant because of the chemicals and she assured me that every thing was fine.
Good Luck!

You can spray them with hair spray if you see them.

I would love to find a natural spider remedy as well. We do not use chemicals. I just do not trust sprays at all, especially with young children. I do not mind the harmless spiders. My sons enjoy watching them, then we catch them and put them outside. But my husband did get bitten by a brown recluse a couple of weeks ago. Thankfully, it hasn't spread with some of the natural remedies we've tried. We have only found one brown recluse in our basement. Of course, we killed it. But we keep watching for more and checking all clothing and bedding before we use it. But I have been wondering about natural spider remedies as well.

J. I know you are hesitant to use chemicals but professionals will work with you. Our first house we had two girls under two and we found ants, roaches, and spiders, none of which I care for. We got an exterminator and he worked with us so none of the chemicals would get on the girls stuff and hurt them. The spiders could hurt them worse than the chemicals. We even had a cat at the time and he was okay. Make the call and get rid of the pests. Good luck and God Bless.

I too grew up in a 100+ year old farm house, and we had brown recluse problems. We used hedge apples(osage orange)and they did an admirable job keeping out most varieties of spiders, granddaddy longlegs, beetles, and other insects. The brown recluse problem was solved when my parents had spray foam insulation put into the walls, killed those little buggers! :)

Don't kid around about those - it is August so I am guessing since you are in KS they are probably brown recluse. I am not trying to scare you but both houses I have been in over the past three years have had serious problems with them. I have a 22 month old and share your concern. The glue traps are the best - I have caught a dozen in the past month. I put them in just about every corner in the each room. (but of course try to hide them so the baby/toddler does not get into it) I also recommend Schendel Pest Control because they use a powder form of treatment that is sprayed into your walls at the baseboards. It is completely safe for kids, pets and you and the spiders track it around the inside of your walls and give it to their friends. I don't think it is chemical based. I am sorry for you and completely understand your problem. I even have them at my work!!! UGH!
