Hi I am new to the Dallas area and I need a good reference for a Speech therapy center for my 3.5 yr old son. He still speaks in mono syllables and was diognized with Apraxia a year back. I checked with UTD - Callier and they do not accept our insurance. When I looked online there are som many therapy centers that I am unable to make a decision. Any good personal reference in the North Dallas area will be greatly appreciated. Thanks to all the moms in the area!

I would highly recommend Richardson Speech and Language Clinic. They used to be located in Richardson, but several years ago they moved to Plano...they just kept the same name. I know them from personal experience with my children and they are awesome. Their address/phone number are: Preston Charles Place, Building #3
3608 Preston Road, Suite 205
Plano, TX 75093

Hope this helps!

Easter Seals was really great for us, and they may have a sliding scale that applies to your family. They accept most insurance.

My first recommendation would be Brenda Bliss, SLP for apraxia if she takes your insurance. She is in the North Dallas area and comes highly recommended from many of the physicians I work with.

You might want to call your school district. My son is in speech therapy and I got him enrolled by calling the school district and they referred me to their division that tests to see if they need it. then he qualified adn has been enrolled. He is now of school age (K) and goes during school but he was in a morning time program for a while. It has really helped him.

My son is 4 and has been in speech therapy for 2 1/2 years. When he first began our pediatrician connected us to ECI (early childhood prevention) which is a great program to help develop children with many needs such as physical therapy, speech therapy, etc. They take all insurance's that I know of but if they have to charge you at all it's a very low minimum fee like $20 a month if I recall correctly.

With that said, once he turned 3 they told me there program stopped for him due to age and that he would have to be seen through the school districts because they start developing them for the "school years". He has transisted very well and his speech has improved dramatically. Also being with the school district it is a free program. So, you can call the ECI program or just contact the school district in which you live in. I hope this helps you!!

Hello S.,

I have been a speech-language pathologist for over 15 years (a graduate of the Callier Center, of which you have already heard about, and is a wonderful facility). I would certainly welcome an opportunity to speak with you. Please feel free to call me ###-###-####), or visit my web site, www.startherapyprograms.com. That web site gives many details about a variety of my parent-child speech therapy classes. The Mamasource web site has several referrals about the program, if you would like to read those. I also offer private therapy.

I hope we will have the opportunity to communicate soon.

Best Regards,
S.

My mom saw Samantha at Matrix rehab. You might call and ask them who they would recommend. You could find the # in the phone book. It's off Coit and Beltline or email her at ____@____.com

She should be a great source of knowing others. She started a program with Parkinson patients that was incredible and it went nationwide

Good luck

Not sure where you are located exactly, but my 3 yr. old son is enrolled at A Therapy Connection in Richardson. It's off of 75 and Arapaho. He's been there for 8 months now and we've been very pleased with the progress he's made. His therapist is excellent and very kid friendly! Check out their website: www.atherapyconnection.com

You may be able to get speech therapy through the elementary school/school district your son will be attending for kindergarten. Call your school district and find out how you can start the evaluation process. My son has stuttering issues and will be starting Kindergarten in the Fall. He has speech therapy twice a week through the school district.

Make sure you receive speak therapy specifically for Apraxia. Traditional speach therapy is not effective for children with apraxia. There is a lady in Park Cities that comes highly recommended. My friend son goes to her. She does work with insurance but I don't know which ones. If you are interested in contacting her - let me know and I will contact my friend. Her son has made great strides. The lady will only help you if she feels she can after meeting your son as it is my understand that apraxia thereapy is around 4x per week. The book "The Late Talker" has a lot of good information esp about apraxia but you may have read it already.

The Callier Center is definately an excellent resource; however, I can understand given the insurance thing. When I spoke to them regarding one of their programs, they said some people pay up front and then file with their insurance. I don't know if that would work for you or not.

In any case... We've been very happy with Our Children's House at Baylor (who does file with our insurance). They're located in several areas and I'm sure there'd be one close to you. Our ST interned at the Callier Center and they all appear to follow a similar methodology (Hannon sp?) and were very aggressive with his therapy which has been helpful for us. My son also enjoyed going there which is important too.

I know they work with a very diverse case load so apraxia would not be something new to them either. I know our ST and the ST who evaluated my son had worked with kids with this since I was concerned about it at the beginning of my ds' therapy. The STs my ds worked with were all well seasoned and have advanced degrees.

Good luck!
