Speech Therapy Advice

I have two year old twin boys that are not talking yet. We have been getting services from ECI since they were 18 months old but have not made much progress at all where speech is concerned. We have decided to kick things up a notch and get an evaluation from a clinic so they can get speech therapy in a more clinical setting. I would appreciate any information on clinics that you have used and your experience with them. Their pediatrician suggested looking at Our Children's House at Baylor Grapevien, Cooks Childrens in Hurst and Therapedia in Southlake so any reviews on those would be great or other suggestions in that area. Also if you had kids with speech delays any advice of particular things you did that got great results would be helpful. Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for your responses. I was able to get my boys scheduled for speech evaluations at OCH Grapevine. The appointment is February 19th, so hopefully we will finally see some progress. Thanks again for your help and encouragement.

my son goes to cooks, in hurst. his situation is different bc he has severe cerebral palsy, however, they have made great progress! you could get an eval. and then when they turn three they can also get school services. i still have my son go to private therapy as well, bc i feel the more he gets the better.

My youngest had has speech delay when he was 2 he started him with cooks because i wasn't seeing any improvement with ECI at all. Then at 3 because thats when our insurance stopped paying for private care because the schools picked up care services for him because his services wasn't cause of an accident he had. Since 3 he has been going to KISD twice a week which is awesome by the way..... HE will be 5 at the end of summer and well there is still room for progress he has came such a long way from where he was.

Dear K. R,

Our grandson went to Cooks Children in Hurst, and he was talking in no time! They were great to work with, and after the first or second visit, he actually began to look forward to going to his sessions!

My 26 m.o. son has been @ OCH in Grapevine for speech and physical therapy. I can't say enough wonderful things about everyone there. He has been doing great, and his speech has exploded this past month. They are wonderful. I gave ECI a try but was not impressed at all. I think it takes awhile to get started as a new patient, but it's worth it.

I highly recommend ____@____.com son went there for speech, occupational, and physcial therapies. Everyone there is wonderful! Before taking our son to OCH, I asked his pediatrician who he recommended (and he works in Cook's network), he highly recommened OCH. Good luck.

My son went to OCH in Coppell. They are much more aggresive than ECI. In fact, I doubt my son would have even qualified for services with ECI to begin with since his receptive language was on one extreme end of the scale and his expressive was on the other putting him at normal if you averaged the two. I remember the therapist who evaluated him (who had worked for ECI for years) said that at home therapy is good for some, but at home the child is in his kingdom and can get distracted, etc. In the clinical setting, it's easier for them to focus.

My son was in therapy 3x a week and loved it. The staff are extremely experienced and well trained. If you don't like your therapist, you can simply change -- no guilt necessary. We loved our therapist btw and had the opportunity to meet others when our son was first evaluated and while his therapist was out. All of them were great. They involved me in the therapy so I could continue to do things at home. I think this is essential to your child's progress.

When we started with my son, we were told to use more sign language (we only used about 4 signs at the time) when communicating with our son. This was extremely helpful for us and I think helped my son with his speech. Reading books and having them point to things is really good. Try and limit all television too. TV does not help at this age.

I can't think of too much else (too early!!). Good luck with your boys.

I don't know of speech therapists in the area, but have their ears been checked for fluid? I'm sure that was one of the first things, but just in case. My twin brothers had horrible fluid in their ears when they were little, which meant they couldn't hear the language around them to learn to speak it. Just a thought. Tubes in their ears and then a few years of speech therapy completely corrected everything.

Good luck, with the speech and the twins! :)

My son has been with Therapy 2000 since he was 9 months old for OT, PT, and ST. They are awesome! At 2 he is almost out of PT (and has been out of OT for about 6 months) and is greatly improving on the speech part. It took awhile to see results (his started not only as speech delay but problems with eating- he would choke and only eat certain textured foods). It isn't that they need a more clinical atmosphere (although I am sure that will work too) but ECI is not the best therapy place. Our pedi. recommended Therapy 2000 over ECI, b/c ECI doesn't see the kids as often, doesn't make up sessions for holidays, etc... She said she had heard some kids being seen only 1x a month b.c of illness, scheduling conflicts, holidays. Therapy 2000 saw my son 9 X a month- whether he was sick, they were sick, or there was a holiday. He was seen 2-3 times a week at his school or home, by both the OT and PT.
I have also heard of good things about Our CHildren's House and there is another called the Calliet Center that does small ST groups. I think it is offered by Univeristy Texas at Dallas.

Good luck.

Been there, done that...I also have twin boys, now 4. We went through ECI too, which was useless. We had the worst speech therapist and she ended up getting fired towards the end of us using them.
We started using Our Childrens house at Baylor in Grapevine when my guys were almost three. It has been great! There was SO much that they have also taught me to help the boys learn. My boys love going there.
Good luck! I would call asap to get them evaluated. they get pretty busy over there. The sooner you get them started the sooner you will see results. : )

My son has been with ECI since he was 18 months and is now 2 also. While my ECI therapist is great, she felt like he was getting distracted at home. He might do better somewhere that he knew he had to work. I've been using OCH Baylor Coppell for 3 weeks and I think we will switch from ECI. He is getting more word repetition and is trying harder. I did find with my son that once he started speaking, it grew on itself. He realized how much he could get when he used words.
