Because of medical reasons, I recently had to stop breastfeeding my three month old and transfer to formula. He is currently on Similac Soy. What are other's thoughts about needing to go with organic? Is it possible to change brands easily for my son? Does anyone know if there is a large difference in quality between brands? Thanks!

Good morning L., everything I have researched about soy products isn't good. i would not give my baby soy. You can go on line and research soy, to see what I'm talking about. J. L.

My son is almost 3 YO and when he was 1 YO (we only supplemented when my health required meds) his Pedi recommended moving away from Soy products on a regular basis. According to him there was not enough research done to disprove the possible issues with endocrine development and thus being a cause for early puberty in many young kids.

I did my own research and found several alternatives and we ended up with Enfamil LactoFree. Had all the same components of Milk and Soy based formulas. I think Organic is great and today I give my son Horizon Organic Lactose Free Milk and we love it. My only issue was that the formulas only came in powder form and for some reason my son was very gassy with it. But, really just find one you like and transition over a few days. Watch for signs of gas or discomfort and of course check with your son's doctor.

Hi L. -
Both my babies were on soy formula and I got "Earth's Best" organic soy formula. They both did great on it! I read up quite a bit on Soy. What weighed heavy on my research was what the American Academy of Pediatrics had to say, because if you research 'soy' - you are going to get a lot of OPINIONS on it too. So, go to sites that have done studies and have facts. At one year, I did change from soy to organic unsweetened/rice milk. Not that they don't have soy on occasion but too much of ANYTHING isn't good for anyone (same goes for dairy). I would suggest getting organic because I did read that approximately 60-70% of all soybeans are genetically engineered (in the US). I also discussed the use of soy w/my pediatrician and he had no problem w/it. Ask your pediatrician and do some research of your own. Good luck! :)

After the baby turns one a great product we used was Soy Good which is dried soy milk powder and when mixed with water makes a delicious milk-type product and is dry so it's much easier and cleaner to travel with it throughout the day.

Good luck

if you have the option, and it really bothers you I would then use the organic brand. I had to stop breastfeeding as well and used similac Soy and my daughter did wooooonderful on it. She loved it. It really depends on your baby how easy the transition would be. I think something others have mentioned about soy not being good for kids--i've heard something like that but I think it relates to toddler boys consuming only soy... like havcing tofu everyday (due to a vegetarian diet perhaps).. and it's not even confirmed.. just a speculation.

I love Earths Best. Does it have to be soy? Try tasting the difference. I use Earths best but not the soy for my baby girl. It is not as sweet as a couple of other organic formulas I tried. Taste test is the best.

Estrogenic substances should not be used by or fed to boys or men. There are too many estrogenic sources in our environment already that are affecting everyone such as petrochemicals and fertilizers.
There was a study done when they found young men growing breasts. What they found was that each of them was using grooming products with estrogenic substances... lavender and tea tree. When those products were replaced, the breasts went away.
Check out www.westonaprice.org and you might change your perception of soy.
If I were a young mother these days, I would probably opt for whey protein as it has immune boosting properties and much more.
Good luck...

miss L.~
a month after my daughter was born i had to stop breastfeeding as well, my little girls stomach would get so upset with my milk that she was in constant pain after eating. Lily is now going on 10 months and has been using only similic soy, with great results. The nurse pratctioner stated that there is no difference in brands other than the lable. The FDA has strict guidlines on this sort of thing. I wish you all the luck with your son,it seem that motherhood comes with lessons for the mommy and baby =>

when i had to stop breast feeding my daughter i put her on good start. it has many different kids including soy and i believe an organic. in my opinion the break down of formula is all the same no matter what type you get (soy, standard etc). what i do notice is how different brands are harsher then others. my daughter started on infamil that didnt agree with her so we tried the simalac that didnt agree with her so we put her on good start and that was great! also a fyi the parents choice and target brand formulas are infamil formulas. if your looking for a very gentle formula i would go with good start in my opinion its as gentle as breast milk. good luck!

Organic is definitely better. Think about the concentration of the formula and realize if it is not organic it has concentrated levels of pesticides and other toxins. I've paid attention to recent studies that found traces of jet and rocket fuel in formula. Don't forget about the recent melamine scare in formula. These things haven't been changed. Also, something like 90% of soy is is gmo - which has been shown to be harmful in animal testing. Organic is definitely better all the way around.

I highly recomend anything organic. It means it is grown with out synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. You really need to read up on Soy. There is a book called "The Truth About Soy." It says that soy is bad unless it is sprouted. The traditional soy that the asians ate is not what we are getting here in the US. We are getting highly processed and usually genetically modified soy. At drmercola.com there is a video clip with a doctor and she tells how bad soy is for children.

I do know of a better alternative than formula. Let me know if you are interested and I will send you a dvd. It has no additives, fillers, chemicals. It is pure and highly nutritious food. It definitely doesn't cost anything to look and it is very important to get educated. Deciding how and what to feed your son is a decision that will impact his health and well being.

God Bless!
J.
