So What Happened?

So of course this happens right when we are changing to formula!! My little one got a hold of an incredibly bad virus. She was vommiting for about a 12 hour stint. Not good! well the doctor and I thought initially it was the formula then we decided it had to be a virus. It definitely was because the next day I was doing the exact same thing she was doing! My husband ended up staying home and taking care of the both of us yesterday. Be careful if you get this it can really wipe you out.

Thank you fr all of your advice on Soy. I grew up on soy also and so did my Dad. We both had milk allergies. We are both fine so I am sure everyones little ones will also be fine. If it happens that our little one doesnt go well with formula then we will switch her to soy. Our doctor gave us a ton of formula to try.

My daughter was on soy until one year old and never had any trouble going from formula to whole milk. She always threw up when we gave her regular formula, so we were given the soy recommendation too. As soon as she got on soy, she never threw up, and rarely spit up! The soy formula smells funny, but she was happy with it.

I used Similiac Isomil Advance Soy formula, and my son did very well. At about 10 months I began the switch to the milk based formula so that I could try to prepare his tummy for real milk a 12 mos. He did excellent, and I spoke to my doctor about a lot of the things I read on the internet about soy and was told that those "studies" are a lot like the ones which were just proven false wth regards to innoculations and autism. Don't believe everything you read on the internet, and just make sure that you and your doctor are communicating freely and openly. If we start buying into every new study that comes out telling us what is and isn't good for us, we'd all end up living like "Bubble Boy", dying from crazy new diseases and terrified to feed our kids or ourselves, or even to walk out of our stainless steel sterile houses. That kind of fear is no way to live. The only resources I listen to are my pharmesist, Doctor and Grandmother. If there's something to be worried about they'll let you know.

These will be helpful websites (in addition to Dr. Mercola's websites-given in an earlier response)
Babies fed soy-based formula have 13,000-22,000 times more estrogen compounds in their blood than milk-based formula. Female hormones inhibit testosterone. Later in life boys may have smaller testes, learning disabilities and ADD. Girls may show signs of puberty very early in life. This is serious!
Do your research and don't choose just because it is a convenience! Good Luck.

the only bad thing about it is that it stinks/ is smelly and it stains if you're not on top of spit up. My daughter couldn't hold down regular formula and her pediatrician kept wanting her to go back to regular formula to see if she could tolerate it any better as she got older and she never was able to. I didn't see anything wrong with it and she has no allergies to date for milk or lactose.. she is now 4 1/2.

Hi M.,
I too use the Similac Isomil Advance Soy Formula. I have had no problems with it at all. Both of my daughters, one who was allergic to dairy and one lactose intolerant, did soy formula and my son, due in April, will be on soy as well. My peditrician has said nothing but good things about it. Do not read what's online. I did that one day and called all the doctors that I could think of to check it all out. It's safe and healthy. Of course, thsy told me to slowly start intrudcing dairy to them after 1 and I have and it has been great. We all drink soy milk and what a difference.
Definately talk to your peditrician though.
Good Luck,
K. :~)

Interesting links. Things often appear "just fine". Many of the documented problems associated with soy formula don't appear until later. Also, these are real scientific studies, not some random person on a homepage talking about a feeling they have. There are MANY peer reviewed, published scientific studies about the dangers of soy. Any doctor who reads medical journals (which sadly isn't many) would have read some of these. It is a phyto-estorgen (why they recommend it to menopausal women). A baby completely fed on soy formula receives the estradial equivalent of 5 birth control pills a day. There is nothing ok about that.

We tried soy with my daughter and it didnt work. We ended up with Enfamil Nutrimagen, it has an orange colored label and is a little pricier but it was absolutely wonderful for her and its for babies that have milk allergies, we tried regular formula after I stopped nursing, then soy, and then ended up on this and she loved it and had no problems and if you join the enfamil site you will get coupons for it. Hope this helps. J.

M.,
I used the Nestle GoodStart Soy for my little guy, now 16 months. He was just fine. And don't believe the junk you read on the internet. There are lots of babies on soy formula for one reason or another. I even had my guy on soy milk from about 10 months til about 13 months. Then I slowly switched to regular whole milk. And he's doing just fine and is growing like a weed!!
I chose the Nestle GoodStart because of the "comfort" proteins that it supposedly has, but think with baby #2, I might try the store brand, like Walmart. I've heard that it is just as good as the "name" brand stuff, and much cheaper!!
Good luck!!

All I can tell you is that I only used soy formula with two of my three children with no problems. In fact I feel it may be healthier because cow's milk can be tained with antibiotics etc. Good luck!

If you are going to use Soy, you want to use organic Soy formula. The reason being that 75% of Soy is bioengineered. It is a GMO, genetically modified organism, along with corn and cotton. Also, Soy is estrogen based. So take into consideration the amount of estrogen your baby will receive. I hope this information helps.

My first daughter (now 3 ) was on Isomil from Similac due to a milk allergy, its the pink one with the teddy bear on it. When we had #2 4 months ago we started her on it as well, since we had great results with our first daughter. If you sign up on-line to the welcome addition club on similac.com, they will send you 5 dollar coupons like once a month. If you have any other questions feel free to send me a message.

Hi M.,

When my daughter was born, she was having trouble tolerating the normal Similac Advance, lots of spit up. Before we left the hospital, I switched her to the Similac Isomil Advance, Soy based. She was fine from there on out. She is now almost six weeks, and still on the Isomil. I have asked every doctor about the soy based formula, and all of them say it's fine as the "regular" stuff. Don't worry, I'd rather be getting 5 ounces of soy formula in a little one than, 2 ounces of regular stuff (and 3 ounces on my shirt).

My daughter has a dairly allergy and has been on soy formula since she was 6 months old. She is now 13 months and very healthy and happy. We tried the Nutramigen at one point but it tastes so bad she refused to eat for a few days after that. There are some long run downsides to feeding you baby soy vs milk but in the end you can't give them milk if they have an intolerance and you have to feed your baby. Its better to give them soy than nothing and from my research there's nothing definite about the long term effects of soy.

My daughter also had many problems with Good Start. You may want to try lactose-free formula first,((not the Good Start brand, though) and see if that works. I don't know why my daughter had problems with the Good Start. She just did, and it went away when we switched back to lactose-free regular formula.

Before deciding on a soy formula, make sure you do your research. The ill effects of soy on humans and especially infants is becoming more widespread. It's almost impossible to find a formula without soy, but there is one out there. The link below will give you more info.
