I've noticed that there isn't anything for/about activities for kids who are ages 13-15 y/o. I was wondering if any moms out there know of any summer activities for my 13 y/o. It seems like all of the camps cut off ages are at 12 y/o and they can't get a summer job until they are 16! Please help this mother of a smart but bored 13y/o girl.

What can I do next?

Try the YMCA, or Torrance Parks and Rec. They usually have something. Salvation Army also has a day camp, maybe for that age?

Hi N.....my husband (well technically I own it too..but he does all the running of the camp) owns a surf camp pvsurfcamp.com They have a good amount of 14 year olds enrolled in the camp.... surfing is pretty awesome for girls... if you go to you tube and type in pv surf camp you can see a cute little video "surfer gir" that a 14 year old made from last year surf camp... if you call or email Leith he can tell you a week that has more 14 year olds enrolled...

Check it out...

I have your answer. Vintage Canvas in El Segundo is doing a painting geared towards kids. Here's how it works: Go to www.vintagecanvas.net check out Sunday's painting. If you are interested call and get a reservation. You and your child will be walked through step by step on how to create that painting and in only 2 hours you both will walk out with a finished 16x20 canvas to take home. This is the first weekend so they have a lower price point. Vintage Canvas is actually for adults, but they are trying to see if there is a need in the community for activities that kids and parents can do together.

Hi N.:

I have my grandaughter for the summer and have her working as a youth volunteer at a local community college. She thinks it's cool to wear a T-shirt that says "STAFF" and assist with kids younger than her.

Check your local community college, i.e. El Camino etc.

yo!

It may be a bit late, but my son has been a counselor in training at a local recreation center summer camp for the past two summers. He is 15 1/2 and really enjoys it, plus he gets paid!

Hi N.,

My daughter has also taken summer drama camp with Starlight Productions through the City of Torrance classes and had alot of fun. It has gone up in price, last year it was $125/week, this year it's $150 so I only signed her up for one week. The rest of the summer she is taking the sports camp through the City of Torrance. If you live in Torrance (certain zip codes) it's $115/week and if you are outside the area it's $125. It's only her first week but she's having a blast. You get to choose between Volleyball, Cheerleading, Softball, Basketball or Soccer. They stay active and they have a bus field trip once a week (cost included in price). They went to Wild Rivers yesterday. :) They also have walking field trips to the Plunge every Friday to swim and they go to Farmers Market every Tuesday. The camp is located at Wilson Park, right next to where they have the Farmers Market. I just checked it out and they only have 2 weeks for sports camp that has openings. Next week starting June 30th they have 6 openings and July 21st week they have 15 openings. The age range is 7 to 14 and your daughter would of course be put with kids her age. Starlight classes have a lot of openings.

Here is the link https://www.tprd.torrnet.com/RegistrationMain.sdi

Under category look for camps and then go to "sports day camp" and Starlight comes right after that.

Good luck!

I don't have kids this age, but try checking out The Daisy Chain ( www.thedaisychain.com ). It's full of information and ads for activities and camps for kids. Maybe you'll find something there.

One other suggestion, how about participating in their community? Find out what they are interested in and then they could volunteer their time. It might be animals, the environment, children, the elderly, homeless, etc. Could be a great growth experience and a lot of fun too.

I know what you mean I complained & complained about this for yrs with the parks dept. Try the big sisters organization, or enroll her at the YMCA program with the baby sitters program so she can start being a baby sitter next year, or later this summer. They do have some craft classes at the parks for her age, did you try to get her involved with the youth groups at the churches, my daughter went to camp at a local church 3 yrs in a row. She only attended the youth group meetings, plus she met new friends leaned a little about religion.

The programs are clean safe, you should of coarse always meet who is in charge. plus the church programs can adjust the fees for camp if you can't afford it.

Good luck

Hi N.!!

My daughter is 12 and we are in about the same boat... Fortunately, my daughter is very much into performing and being on stage, so she is taking a summer camp type program through Starlight Productions, which starts July 1... I would also recommend checking out the community classes in Torrance or any of the other cities nearby must have them. Rachel has taken dance, piano, guitar, and so on, for super affordable prices!! She has a great time!

Of course, there is always the option of seeing if she has any friends with SAHMoms who are willing to have another kid in the house... I know I would be super happy to have another 12 or 13 year old around here so Rachel would be less bored and (hopefully) watch less tv, lol...

Have a great summer!!

Huggles!!
