Sort of JFF - Do You Sleep with Your Door Closed?

So we normally sleep with our door closed but cracked opened. We have a window above our double doors to our room so usually if a light turns on at night, it wakes me up and I'll go investigate. And I think I can usually hear the kids with it cracked. But the last few nights the air conditioner has been causing our door to creek, which keeps waking me up. So I shut the door completely for the first time, which made me a little nervous. What if a fire started, or someone broke in? You know, typical mellow dramatic thoughts at midnight. Anyway, we have 6 kids ages 4 to 12. The 4 year old sleeps in an addition off our bedroom, so she has to go through our room to leave. But the other 5 (6.5 - 12) are on the opposite end of the house. They always wake up before us and if it's a school day start to get ready on their own, or just hang out on the weekends watching TV or playing on the computer till we get up. We have a pretty active love life so I feel like we do need to keep our door shut, but wonder if closing it all the way, all night long, is irresponsible with kids in the house.

What do you do?

What can I do next?

I leave the door open, because that's what I prefer. My son's bedroom is now at the other side of the house. I don't believe I could hear anything going on in his room, or on that side of the house.

ETA: If we are doing something we don't want him to see, we get up and shut the door. It's not that difficult of a task.

We never close any of the bedroom doors. Not all the rooms even have doors at this point.
Between the kids and the cats it's just not worth it or a good idea to close them.

get a monitor so you can hear outside the door and close it if that is what makes you comfortable. Get some sleep and don't worry. Certainly if someone broke in or someone got sick one of the other kids would hear their sibling and alert you.

I have become a fan of the baby monitor. Not for babies....lol.

We just got licensed as foster parents and due to the configuration of our house, it meant hubs and I moved downstairs, the 13 year old has our old bedroom and we have a bedroom with bunkbuds (those 2 share a jack and jill type bathroom).

We put a baby monitor in the hall upstairs right out off the bedrooms. we can't hear whipsering, but if anyone *talks* in a regular or excited voice we will hear it. Also if anyone needs help in the bathroom we would hear them if they call out.
We could also hear if goblins come in the house... unless they're the stealthy kind.
The baby monitor has done wonders for my peace of mind.

To answer your question.... no, I don't think it's irresponsible - especially not with kids your kids ages.'
And - we generally only close the door when we're having the monkey-love-time. However, one time my 13 year old rounded the corner to our bedroom in a full dead run of excitement to share good news about some celebrity or something-or-another and caught hubs (her step-father) with no shirt on. Now, she's seen him with no shirt on plenty of times, as we practically live at the pool all summer. But you'd have thought she ate poisoned poo by the look on her face. priceless. So, we were asked to close our door for *any acts of indiscretion* - Ah, gotta love a teenager with a large vocabulary.

We close the door. There's nothing irresponsible about having a little privacy. Kids can knock.

We leave ours open. The kids are 12 and 15, and we've always left the door open. So I can hear and they can come in without waking Dad up if they "need" something during the night. They always (when they were little) came to my side of the bed, and didn't even speak. Dad slept through, I dealt with the kiddos. He went to work/I was SAHM.

We still leave it open. If we need privacy, we close it and then re-open it again before going to sleep. It's not a big deal.

We also have a dog who follows me. She doesn't go in our room until I go to bed (husband turns in before me frequently due to his work schedule). She usually stays, but sometimes checks on the house and kids. And she will go in their rooms, too, and come back out.

Depends. If it's a little warm and I don't want to turn on the air-conditioner, I definitely keep it open to let cool air in. Even when the temperature is not an issue, I keep it slight open most days. But this is not because of my daughter or because I want to make sure I hear what's going on in our house. I don't really have a reason. That's just what I do.

My husband sometimes closes it when he wakes up in the middle of the night to use the restroom because our toilet is really loud and he's afraid the noise would wake our daughter.

We sleep with our door open.

If by chance one of the dogs gets blocked outside the door, we would not hear the end of it until we opened the door!

We have a security system with the babysitter alarm and we would know if any door or window opened but at the same time, our 3 dogs are good about alerting us to any unknown noise, etc.

We used to sleep with everyone's doors opened a crack. Then we found out my husband and son had a cat allergy. Now all doors are closed at all times. Plus now we have a dog that my husband doesn't want sleeping in our room. We have wooden floors and so there's a crack on the bottom of each door. I've never had a problem hearing the kids if they need me.

If we closed our doors all the way, the cats would scratch at them and whine to be let in. :D We keep our doors open enough so the cats can get in.

We keep out door open to hear the kids. I do leave their doors only open a crack.

If we have sex, we do it in the family room or in our locked bedroom.

I sleep with the door shut. We have two dogs and they sleep in our room, I rather they are not all over the house all night. When ever my dogs hear a door open in the hallway they alert me and I know if I feel the need to investigate I will and they settle back down. It is actually supposed to be safer in cases of a fire to sleep with the door closed, this is why we practice escape routes. I actually do not know many people who sleep with the door open, my parents never did.

We always sleep with our door closed and so do the kids. If we left the doors open then the cats would be in our beds at night. I also like to have some privacy. Our house is not so huge that I can't hear what's going on outside my bedroom door when it is closed.

We keep it wide open. We get up and close it if we are being "romantic"... Which we only do after they are asleep anyway. Then we open it again when its all over.

I prefer to have full access among the rooms at night. But my kids are small still (3 and 6) that may change when they get older and want their own privacy. I would feel very strange at this stage with my little ones in a closed door room.

Yup, door closed. We have cats...huge cats...who snore...loudly! I have weird "spider-sense" mom hearing. I always hear the kids, even though the door, our rooms aren't that spread out either.

We also use gates at the kid's doors, to keep the cats from "knocking" while the littles sleep. They make noise to move too so it adds to the " mom hearing".

I think it depends on your kids. It sounds like you've got some good ones. You said you can trust them in the mornings to get ready for school/ entertain themselves safely. Close the door if you like or not...no big deal either way. You're not locking it so what's the difference that split second going to make in turning the knob if there is a break in or fire? If it makes you feel better, start up a buddy system in case of an emergency your older children grab your younger. Not sure what the ages are exactly, but the idea is that you grab the 4 year old, your 12 year old gets your next youngest, then your next oldest gets the next youngest and so on. Do they share rooms? The oldest in the room is in charge of getting the younger ones out? Just a few ideas. :)

We sleep with it closed. We have a security system, so that helps me know that nobody is getting in or out without me knowing. We also test our fire alarms monthly, so I know they are working properly.

Kiddo still sleeps in our bed (UGH), and we close our door. I sleep better with the door closed for some reason. On the rare occasion Oliver has slept in his own room, we keep the door cracked open so that he can get in (Our door is harder to open, you really have to push it).

We keep it open when sleeping. I guess it is a habit from when the kids were little. They are now 15 and 10. We have an alarm too so I would know if anyone came in the house or if someone went downstairs.

i sleep with it open now because the critters wander in and out. when the boys were small we usually left it cracked, but often slept with it closed. i don't think it's irresponsible. if something happens, you'll hear it (unless you sleep unusually heavily.)

Right now, it is just hubby and I (kids are all grown and out on their own), but we keep our door closed..... we used to have it open, though.

We use window air conditioning units, so we have one in our bedroom, and keep the door closed to keep it cooler in there.

As far as the argument about wanting the door open in case of fire, even fire officials recommend keeping the door shut... if you have fire alarms, you will be able to hear them easily through the door, and that slows the spread of the smoke and such throughout the house. All bedroom doors should be shut for safety in that instance.

We sleep with all doors open.

That being said we had a fire chief come speak to our MOPS group, and his advice was to sleep with all doors closed. Because if a fire starts it gives you more time once you wake up to be out of the smoke...because your smoke alarms would have gone off and the bedrooms are more smoke free.

I have always thought he was right, but we still sleep with them open because the kids don't like them closed and I Iike the kids to sleep and stay asleep.

Open when we're in there or the cats will be stuck and not able to get to the letterbox. Closed when we're not in there or the cats will use the bed as a litter box. D__N cats!
