Hello moms!
My son has wanted a 'lizard' for a pet for quite some time, and my husband and I have finally decided that he is old enough (and responsible enough) to care for one. My question is, do any of you have lizards as pets? What would be the best kind to get? I've heard different things about different kinds, and am looking for some advice. I don't want one that will die in a few weeks (anoles, I know, don't last very long). He has been saying he wants a bearded dragon...I just don't know! I have a lot of researching to do in the next couple of weeks!
Anything is appreciated!

What can I do next?

We have a bearded dragon as well...they are pretty easy and can be pretty friendly-don't let the crickets scare you away. You get used to it. And he eats all of our vegetable scraps!

I second Bearded Dragons they make great pets and aren't aggressive, which Iguanas can be. Do a lot of research and head to the pet store!!! So much fun I can't wait to do all of that when my 2 year old is older!!

Just be very careful with any king of lizard that he understands that washing hands and arms after handling the animal is very important because of the diseases they carry. As you can probably tell not a big fan of lizards.

Good Luck,
S.

We just got a bearded dragon for my son's 7th birthday. He's been a GREAT addition to the family. Friendly, very easy for us (as long as you are OK with Crickets). My 7 and 5 yr old are VERY comfortable getting him out of the cage, holding him, caring for him etc.

I can actually say that even *I* enjoy him... they are WONDERFUL!

I can give you information for the breeder I used if you want.

My daughter (10) has a leopard gecko. He is a nice little fella, but all he really does is pee and squeak when we try to hold him. He eats lots of crickets (so we go to the pet store quite often, which is something not everybody likes to do) and we've watched him grow from about 3 inches to 10, so that's been fun. We do wash our hands really well after doing anything with him. Also we try to keep his cage clean to minimize disease. They really need their cages to be kept clean. I have heard the bearded dragons are nice too. I would just make sure that you know the full adult size of whatever you get. Sometimes they look really cute when they're babies, and then they get huge (i.e. iguanas).
