Hello mommas! I was hoping to get some ideas on what to buy our son for his first birthday (he'll be 1 on March 24th). There are so many different things to choose from that it makes it really difficult to know which ones are worth the money and are something my little guy will actually play with. Any help or advice you can give would be greatly appreciated. :)

What can I do next?

I always have to respond to this request because I think i have the perfect 1st bday present. the radio flyer small push wagon, it is not cheap ($90ish). but my son recieved this for his 1st bday and he still uses it and he is 6! it is a fantastic 'learn to walk' toy (we always piled it with books to make it even slower) and it really grows with them.
highly recommend!!

A nice Radio Flyer wagon is my opinion...we did that for my first son's first birthday and it has been used many miles for festivals, parades, farms, zoos...LOVE it and are still using it often in the summertime when my boys are now 3 and almost 5. We got the all wood all-terain one and LOVE it. :)

Fisher Price Learning Home is always a winner. The kitchen one is cute too, but the Home is the better choice. My son plays with it everyday. My friends have them for thier kids as well and it is a hit. Worth the price for sure.

Also, if you want something that lasts, the little tikes brand seems to. One friend of mine has a 16 year old daughter who had a little tikes garden toy (could go inside or out) and it is still like new (she has a new baby that uses it now). Also another person has a 20 year old little tikes dump truck and now his grandchildren use it! Both have held up so well that when I do purchase outdoor/indoor toys, that will be my brand of choice!

Just take a lot of pictures! Those will be the most important to him when he gets older!! I wish I had more of my first bday! Enjoy!!

we got a wagon and it was the best investment. you do not always have to get a "toy" he will get little things from guests if you have a party. my son just really wanted the boxes to play with, he could of cared less what was in them. i have a 16 step son and a 2 yer old now. my oldest will even take his brother for short walks in the wagon.

We bought a family membership to the zoo. We go every other weekend from spring to fall and usually pack a picnic lunch. It's wonderful family time for us. Also, what about a bike trailer so that you can take him riding around with you? Our daughter loved that! I am more into gifts that will last and involve time together than the plastic toys they outgrow (though we have our fair share of those!). If you want something for your son to unwrap, I would suggest a sand/water table. Lots of fun for more than one summer :)

Congratulations! My son just turned 1 and he LOVES his Radio Flyer wagon. We've been pulling him around the house in it since it's too cold to go outside.

What about opening a bank account or setting up a trust fund that will teach him to save/invest and will give back far beyond any toy? Think ahead to college, a down payment on a house, etc.

Couple that with a small toy he can play with now but won't cost a ton and put the money into his future.

How about a plastic slide for outside (or inside)? We have a few and the kids love them. He'll of course need help using it, but he'll love it as he gets bigger.

My son turned one recently and got a few things he loves. He has a wagon that for now is inside but will go outside when warm enough. He loves to ride in it and be pulled around and pulls his toys in it as well. He also got the Fisher Price learning home and plays with it for long periods each day. The home was the best gift in my opinion because he will play with it on his own while I cook or do laundry!

My son's birthday is that same week. We got him one of those ride on cars with a parent handle. I think he'll love getting wheeled around in it all summer.

This is so simple it's laughable. Buy a good set of stacking cups (more than just 3 to stack). Not only will he learn about stacking but when he gets older he'll use the cups for various other building purposes. It's not at all a "big" gift, but it's a guaranteed great gift.

M.,

When my son turned 1 his grandparents gave him a red fire engine (plastic w/sounds) and even though he was too young to have much of a preference for toys---he was really wowed by it. All the kids who visit us, ages 1-5 love that truck. It is from Sam's Club and it came with 2 firemen--the firemen action figures really were a hit when he was 2 and 3. He was a little young that first year to use all the features so we kept the ladder tied down but was still drawn to the noise and color. They sell them at other stores like Target, Toys R Us, etc.

Don't know how much you are looking to spend, but my son received a swing set for his first birthday. It's not a big fancy wooden one, it more of the old fashion metal with a slide, 2 swings, glider I believe it was purchased from either Walmart or Toy s rus it was not too much more than $100.00. Maybe you could get grandparents to go in on it with you. They should be getting them soon with spring coming.

Invest in some good wooden blocks, These will carry you through many hours of play! If space is not an issue a play kitchen is worth every penny boys and girls love these.( you can find self contained plastic and wooden all over the internet and resale shops) Happy Birthday to your little enjoy the day!

As far as toys go I do not have any great ideas. My daughter recently turned one as well and we went to Color Me Mine and painted her a special birthday plate as a special memento. We put her birthday on it, painted a little picture and signed it. I have it on display in her room and hope it is something she is happy to have as she gets older. Just another idea, maybe in addition to a great toy!

Hi M.,

This may not be at all what you have in mind, but for a first birthday, I think it is really nice to give the child both an inexpensive toy gift to play with but also a lovely momento that will last his entire life. For my daughter's first birthday, we bought her a baby comb from Tiffany's and had it engraved with her name and date of birth. We know it's something she'll cherish forever and that will probably get handed down to her children and grandchildren. Then, of course, we bought her a baby doll to play with, since she won't actually appreciate the other gift until she is much older. If this sounds like something you would like to do, there are tons of cute, inexpensive toy items you can pick up at Target. A favorite amongst both boys and girls is the Parents toy cash register. My daughter is 3 now and still loves that thing. Also, Fisher Price (I believe it is them) has these things called Geo Trax. My nephews can't get enough of them!

Hope this helps! Congrats and happy bday to your boy! : )

Our son turns two this year on March 8th. For his first birthday we got him a Radio Flyer Rocking Horse. He LOVED it and still loves it! It's nice that it still gets used pretty much daily. This year we are getting him a wagon and I think that a wagon would have been an equally appropriate gift for his first birthday (although I might have made a different choice of the TYPE of wagon then). I stick with radio flyer products since I think the quality of their products is worth the money (you definitely want something that lasts). Most importantly, I want to convey that the first (and I'm even realizing that the 2nd) birthdays are mostly for the parents and the family. The baby has NO idea it's his birthday and just enjoys the attention and that first cupcake! So, really a big box would keep him entertained!

I have two sons. One is 4 the other is 18 months. They both love trains by Fisher Price called Geo Trax. They are virtually impossible to break and great indoors. If you are looking for an outdoor idea a Cozy Coop car by Little Tykes is loved by both as well.
