Son Keeps Throwing Up

On Sunday my daughter had a stomach bug all day, by Monday she was better. On Sunday night my son threw up, but seemed to feel fine on Monday. Then on Tuesday night he threw up again, yesterday he seemed fine again. He was eating, playing, seemed fine and then last night he threw up again! And not just a little, A LOT. He does not have a fever, seems fine again today. Is this just a stomach bug that is intermitent? My daughter has not thrown up again. THoughts? Ideas? I am tired of cleaning up puke and I have bleached and lysoled my house so much that it smells like a hospital. I have thrown away toothbrushes, sanitized towels, bedding (multiple times), on and on I could go.
Thanks
M.

Worth a call to the ped's office. Most likely its nothing more than him doing too much or eating something that's h*** o* his delicate tummy. But it could be something more serious.

My grandson had something like this a few months ago. My daughter did the brat diet with him for a few days to reset his system. No problems after that.

It sounds like he has a bug that needs to work its way out of his system. When you have a stomach bug, some foods are fine and some foods will make you sick. If I were you I would try to remember what he ate and drank before getting sick and what he ate and drank during other times that day. For now, stick with the foods and fluids that did not make him sick. Also, really push the fluids. It's great if he can eat, but fluids are most important.

I really wouldn't waste anymore time and energy with bleach, lysol, sanitizing, etc. He already has the bug. He's not going to catch it again. If he gets sick and some of it gets on his sheets, yes you should wash them. But the way you describe it sounds like a lot more work than just throwing one set of sheets in the wash.

Relax. It's a stomach bug. We all get them from time to time, and not everyone responds the same way. I tend to get sick, whereas my husband and son tend to get diarrhea instead. That's just how our bodies respond. I wouldn't worry just because your son responded differently than your daughter.

I would have him on a very bland diet for a few days. Here is the B.R.A.T diet that the doctors recommend:

Bananas
Rice
Applesauce
Toast

I'd call your pediatrician' office and speak with the nurse. I don't mess around with stomach bugs. Especially continuous vomiting spells. Dehydration can be very difficult to manage when they are vomiting like that.

I totally agree with Diane B. Don't keep bleaching stuff. It's bad for you all.

Do call the doctor's office. It's really important that your son is kept hydrated. Dehydration can affect the heart and the kidneys. You can't see blood in the urine but they can check for it. Dehydration can form crystals that cut the urinary tract when he pees. The heart has a sac around it and you don't want that fluid in the sac to be affected by dehydration.

The doctor is the best way to go. Don't monkey around with this.

And just to add, it is NOT rude to tell people that we aren't doctors. The person telling you this is NOT using a condescending attitude. It IS rude and condescending for a poster to call someone rude and condescending for that.

I will say that I normally do not clean with heavy chemicals but when someone has been sick (ie the stomach bug) the bleach and lysol make a breif apperence. My son was sick last week and I was the crazy mom that was making sure he washed his hands, wiped down electronics and such bleached the bathroom, changed out towels, etc It was a short lived virus however sometimes they can be longer lived. Just keep doing what you are doing and it will pass.

My kids sometimes seem fine, but then a day of school or playing, and whammo - back it comes. So I tend to do that second day home approach, whether they need it or not. We've had the relapsing illness many times. Also if they eat dairy. I like Osohappi's advice.

I'm sure you'll have him checked out if it continues or worsens. He may have a bad bug that your daughter only had a mild version of.

Good luck and I hope he feels better soon :)

M.,

We just had the flu and bronchitis in this house a few weeks ago. It was NOT fun. We took turns getting sick. Thank God - no vomiting.

I would get some pedialyte pops or freeze some gatorade as popsicles to ensure that he doesn't get dehydrated. It doesn't take much to get dehydrated when you are vomiting.

Too much bleach is a bad thing too. Inhaling it could make things worse for everyone in the house.

Hand washing is important.

If you are wondering what's going on? Call the advice nurse and see what they say. I don't think it's anything to rush to the pediatrician about. If you are really concerned? Give 'em a call. Otherwise? no more bleach, hand washing, popsicles to stay hydrated and the BRAT (banana, rice, applesauce and toast).

Good luck!

Anything they eat, then don't then go back to a day later, perhaps with mayonaise? like a potato or pasta salad or something? Sometimes those are not real good and should be chucked. I read all the other ideas, those are probably on spot but just thought of this.

Sometimes bugs just need to run their course.

Bleach is a VERY effective anti viral as well as antibacterial cleaner. Bleach at a 1:40 dilution is a standard disinfection protocol in both human and veterinary facilities. It is effective at disinfecting environmental surfaces from noroviruses (https://www.osha.gov/Publications/norovirus-factsheet.pdf) as well as many other viruses (and bacteria).
