I would talk to the school and the bus driver. Bus violence can be really serious. If the problem persists, can you drive him to school?

I think that this is an on going issue that needs to addressed in our school system, bullying has gone on since i was a child and probley before that. I think that schools should have stricker policies on bulling so that it is not favorable for children to do so any more. Other states have programs in thier school systems that deal with bullying children, I think it should be used in this state also. L.

I would suggest he sit in the front seats, near the driver. The close proximity to the driver should hinder any violence.

My sons are not school age yet but this is one of my biggest fears.
I know you do not want to teach your son to be violent and I agree with that. Both of my sons are very small for their age and I have put them in Parks and Rec karate type programs. It deals with stranger danger and bullies. It really built up their confidence. That will work for future problems but I know you need a more immediate answer.
Can you talk to a teacher about the kids he is having a problem with? I usually find that when my pre-schooler has a problem with a child, it is because the child is not treated well at home. It may help your son to understand why the kids are being bullies.
Are there any kids in your neighborhood who he could buddy up with on the bus?
I would address the issue. I know you do not want to be over protective but if the bullies know you are watching, they may pick on someone else. I know it is hard when you work- I am a working my myself- but can you be at the bus stop in the morning or afternoon and somehow make eye contact with the kids? Let them know you will not put up with their behavior.
If there is anyway he can pretend it does not bother him, that will also deter them. That is easier said thatn done! If the kids do not get a reaction out of him, picking on him will not be fun anymore.

I just read Sasha's response and that is a GREAT suggestion!

one way to discourge bullying, and i know from what you wrote thats all you are wanting to happen, is to have your son join a sport or club, or group, for something he is interested in. such as art of soccer. this may not seem true but it really is, kids who join up with other kids with similar interests are much less likely to be bullyed, and they make firends because they like the same stuff. if he is really into art or books and the school doesnt have a club for it talk to the staff and start one, it will be worth it not only for your son but the kids around him that also like the same stuff. (some kids are not in to sports, thats the reason for clubs.) do not take NO for a awnser, and we just dont have the funds is also not a good reason. if the school is haveing a bullying problem and your son is the vic, there are others and the school needs to fix it.
