Son Has a Bad Blackeye, Should I Be Worried?

My son (almost 2) and another little girl literally RAN into each other yesterday. At first just the side of his face had a small (quarter size bump) but overnight his whole eyelid and eye socket developed a pinkish purple bruise and it's swollen. He's never had a black eye before and doesn't bruise easily on his face. His eyeball is a little red but barely noticeable. He keeps pointing to it and saying "OW!". Do you think it's something I should be worried about? I'm satisfied just giving him some pain reliever because I'm sure it hurts--he's super tough, had some brutal falls and never cried so, if he tells me it hurts its because it really hurts.

What can I do next?

I would give him some Motrin, apply an ice pack and then call my Dr. Just tell them the situation and see what they think your next step should be. Poor kiddo, it must ache and be sore! Make sure to take a Picture and document his first black eye and it was from a girl! LOL j/k
Good luck with your little man xoxox

I would call the ped but first check his pupils - remember PEARL - Pupils Equal And Reactive to Light - do they dilate at the same rate when exposed to light (or the reverse when light is removed) - when you call the ped they will probably ask about his pupils - you should check this with any head injury. Also - you shouldn't give motrin with a possible head injury - it increases blood flow and if there is a possible injury you can make it a lot worse with Motrin. call a nurse line, nurse triage or his ped and see what they recommend.

I'd call the pediatrician just to be on the safe side b/c he's so young. The doctor will probably want to see him just to take a look at his eyes and make sure that everything is okay!

It is always hard to decide when to have it checked out or not. It will be hurting of course because bruises hurt. If it was right on the eye there could be damage and needs checked. My niece was hit with a paintball in the eye and it could have killed her if she moved around to much. She couldn't even watch tv or read for a while after. I am sure that your son's injury isn't like that though, a head is a lot bigger then a paintball. I think your mother's intution would work for you if you listen to it. Do you think it needs looked at? Take him in. Always remember that when you aren't sure it is always better to err on the side of precaution.
