Son and His Shorts

My 13 yr. old guy just informed me that he's the only one that wears briefs. He says when they change for P.E. all the other guys wear boxers.

Well I want him to fit in and be one of the guys...I wish he'd have said something sooner!

Do most tween guys wear briefs or boxers these days? Maybe I'm out of the loop on this one!

What can I do next?

Most boys I know, and I know lots of them because I have son, prefer boxer briefs.
They give more support than a standard boxer.
My son hasn't worn briefs since he was 8 or so.

How interesting.

Well, there are 'boxers' nowadays, that are like briefs. But longer.
Is that what he means? It is called "boxer briefs."
If you go to Old Navy online for example, and click on the "boys" category then type in "boxer briefs" in the search box, you will see what it looks like. And you can show him and see if that is what he means or wants or likes.

These are the more updated "boxers" that guys wear now. NOT the "Grandpa" type looking boxers.

My 13 year old wears boxers and has since he was 11. His choice. He says they are more comfortable than briefs. And I think they are slightly more modest ( less "revealing" if you will) when you have to change in a locker room full of boys :-)

well, our boys wear briefs, boxers OVER the briefs, then shorts. They all wear them, even in the winter time. We can have snow, freezing rain, whatever, all the boys are in shorts, well most of them. Oh, and mom, don't forget the black Nike socks that they have to wear too. That's the IN thing too.

Middle school and high school = boxers. Changing in front of the guys in the locker room = boxers. They are the garment of choice, and also provide more camo with the loose fit.

interesting question, my 11yo prefers Boxer briefs and my 9yo loves his tighty whities, (they both have been dressing out for PE since 2nd grade (now 6th and 4th) my 11yo is more of a conformist and will want to wear what everyone else is wearing, but my 9yo is a trail blazer he is going to do his own thing no matter what, and he is very popular too, it's just his style, and he doesn't care... (yet) I figure it's underwear, I'll let them wear whatever makes them happy as long as they are wearing underwear. now about my 6yo, he still wears printed underwear and printed boxer briefs, but I'm sure that will change soon enough

My 12 yr old wears boxers. He started with briefs while potty training. Then to boxer briefs when he was 3/4, then to boxers about age 5. I tried to buy boxer briefs but he says no. my husband wears boxers too and says he has always wore them. I think most tweens wear boxers but im not in the boxs locker room either, lol

my sons both preferred boxers over briefs by the time they were ?10?

Briefs were worn for sports only, until they discovered boxer briefs. My older son is back in boxers, but my younger son is sticking with the boxer briefs....which is my preference for him too.

All of this is much better than the teen girls (& older) who like to go commando regularly. Just don't get that one!

My 13 yr old wears boxer briefs. Started doing so about 2 years ago.... his first year in middle school gym. LOL
I actually like them better for him too... And they tend to not be washed with the white clothes b/c they come in colors! So ALLL his stuff almost can be tossed into the same load of clothes: jeans, tan/grey/brown/forest green boxer briefs, khaki shorts, black no seeum socks...lol

p.s. no need to go to Old Navy or whatever... pick up Hanes or Fruit of the Loom right at Walmart or Target. They come in packages just like the tighty whiteys, only there are sometimes less pairs in a package.

Never even thought of this - glad your brought it up! My 9 1/2 yr old went to boxer briefs around age 6 because he wanted to be "big like Dad". My 6 year old still wears briefs, mainly because that's what I have chosen to make it easier to tell their laundry apart! But I plan to ask him when he grows to the next size what he would like me to buy. It's funny, I never even really consider plain boxers because I figure they would bunch up in the pants legs, and that would make ME uncomfortable!

I have a daughter, so I don't know what boys' underwear styles are these days. But I do know that with my daughter, I bought her whatever kind of underwear she asked for, whether it was bikinis, boy shorts, or thongs. I figured that anything as personal as underwear should be what SHE liked, not what I liked.

Hey -
My son is younger, but he wears boxer briefs. I think that all of the boys think just briefs are uncool.

Why don't you let him pick out what he wants - try boxers and boxer briefs.

Good luck!

I think they outgrow briefs for the most part when it's no longer cool to have Scooby Doo or Cars or Starwars on them. Your post gave me a giggle since I know I'll be there in a few years with two boys. Who knew it'dI be sucha a biggood deal? Boys and their underwear LOL.

I have two boys (17 and 13) and they wear boxers and so do all their friends, from what I can tell. There are also boxer briefs, that fit tighter but are long. In listening to conversations, none of the boys would get caught wearing "whitey tighteys".

I have one son (18) and two step sons (19 and 17) and both have different tastes. One wears bikini briefs, one briefs, and the other boxer briefs. I would let your son choose what he prefers. As he gets older, his preference may change. Everyone should be able to pickout what they want.

my son wears boxerbriefs. My hubs always said a growing boy needs that support.... tmi but he had a airforce buddy who grew up on boxers and he had some issues down there with sagginess or something. So when he didn't want briefs anymore-we went to boxerbriefs. Helps that dad wears them too. But just so you know...boys tend to exaggerate that they are the only ones! like my son was the only one without a phone. funny i talked to a mom the other day and her son says the same exact thing :)

My son decided at 4 he was too big for underwear and he wanted boxers like dad. He said underwear were for babies. That rocked on for about a year. Recently I bought him boxer briefs and he loves them. They are his new favorite. They fit snug and stretchy like briefs, but they cover like boxers. Best of both worlds.

Glad to read you didnt say he was being made fun of. Reason I say this is because my son is 11 and has been wearing boxer briefs for a few years now. He starts 6th grade on Tuesday which means now changing clothes in the locker room for P.E. classes. A few moms who have older kids in middle school informed me that if your son wears 'tighty whities' they will more than likey be made fun of in the locker room.

My son wears boxer briefs - longer in the leg, but jersey knit. He loves them. He tried briefs, then regular boxers, then discovered these. When he tried "commando" he had a little, um, zipper incident, and gave that up pretty quickly.
