I was in the room with my ex husband. It was vendication.

I loved every minute of it...um...wait...sorry...tangent.

He had some complications because he didn't follow dr's orders to the letter and instead of being out a week, he was out for nearly 3. (There was an issue getting to the tube on one side as well).

Smiles and good luck to you and yours.

We used Dr. Stroud at DFW Urology. He was great. My hubby healed fine- he was sitting around for a couple days and couldn't lift our three kids for a week, no problems. Just follow the doctor's orders.

Make sure how your insurance works, in looking into it for my husband, I found out that our insurance covers it at 80% (after deductible) if done in office and at 100% (after deductible)if done at the hospital. We haven't paid a deductible on him yet so it will be a "Happy New Year" celebration - hee hee! Best wishes and I look forward to reading your responses for more suggestions.

Follow ALL Dr. orders. It is a quick, painless office procedure, or at least was for my hubby. The Pain hits later after the "snip"

Stay on some type of birth control. It took my hubby 6 months to be "clean". Even after that I stayed on the pill until my hysterectomy years later for fear of an oopsie.

Best wishes!

My husband just got this done. Congrats on getting to this point :) There were a lot of conversations in our house; then a pregnancy scare. That is what actually got him to make the appointment. I would recommend going to the consult with your husband; I wish I had gone. My husband said I didn't need to; so I didn't make a big deal about it. However, I really wish I would have gone to ask questions and just hear from the doctor what to expect. I did go to the surgery with my husband even though I had to wait in the waiting room. My husband did it on a Thursday and took Friday off of work; then rested through the weekend. I bought him a bunch of magazines that he likes and made him very comfy on his favorite chair. Good luck!

I'm helping my husband build courage to get his done. But I want to say I LOVE the responses.
Especially the "it won't hurt you one bit."
FUN!

Make sure that he takes it easy for at least 48 hours! Several men told my hubby beforehand to rest up... they had learned the hard way and "felt a little better" and got up to do things like mowing, etc and then were off their feet for several days more. We rented about 8 dvds for my hubby and he just spent two days either in bed or in the recliner and everything went well (except for a bit of post-op bleeding). Another hint... bags of frozen peas make fabulous ice packs! Buy two or three (they are cheap) so that they can be refrozen and reused, then toss them out when he is done with them. Good luck with the surgery!

By the way... I watched the whole procedure in our doctor's office...

My biggest advice is, "Don't Delay!" I got pregnant between the time we decided my husband would have the vasectomy and the time it was performed. Of course, we can't imagine our lives without our littlest one. Anything can happen til the doctor gives the all clear!

I have even more love and respect for my hubby after he had his vasectomy.

Dr.Dan Johnson is an excellent urologist, which is (I think) the kind of doctor you need for this. Good luck!!

I don't have any suggestions about doctors, etc. But I really want to share with you a TRUTH that many men/couples don't 'hear' when they are told. Some Vasectomies are not successful. The only way to know they are successful is to WAIT UNTIL THE SECOND SAMPLE TESTING that your husband will give at the doctors office AFTER the vasectomy to confirm it worked. We have 2 couples that we are friends with that 'got together' before the 2nd testing and had additional children. I also used to work in a lawfirm and my last case (I was a litigation paralegal)was a woman who had life threatening health issues and wasn't supposed to get pregnant- same situation as I described above, and she almost died before giving birth. It's just important to know that while the procedure is considered common and rather simple, it is still very important to do what the doctor says and go to follow up appointments. Good Luck!

It is so easy for them (men)!

Get it done in the morning, and he spends the rest of the afternoon on the couch with the remote in one hand the his other hand on the bag of peas on his crotch.

The next day - he is fine!

Get him some junk food and some movies... done!

One big, important step for you - make sure he goes in to get tested when he is supposed to!!! It will take the worry out of the whole ordeal!!

Go for it! It will improve your intimate relationship significantly! Just make sure he takes it easy for a day or two. The kids and I went to the store after we got him settled after surgery, came home and found out "macho man" mowed the lawn. Bad Idea!!!!!!!!!!

Dr. Bush in Plano was great. We both loved him. Make sure your husband follows all doctor's orders and he'll be fine. I think I took my kids out of town the weekend after the surgery so he could heal in peace. My husband did it while awake and I got to watch the whole thing. Have lots of ice packs and lots of TLC and he should be fine. Good luck!
