My latest favorite has been a can of coconut milk, a can of blended pineapple and fruit juice to fill it out. Makes a great popsicle, and the kids have been loving it

I just use a banana(for thickness), fruit of choice, and some frozen strawberries or other frozen fruit(instead of ice). Add in some vanilla hemp milk, soymilk, regular milk or juice and blend. Add extra bananas for thicker smoothies or for freezing into ice pops.

Pink Drink

Ingredients:

1 banana (peeled)
5-6 medium strawberries
6 ice cubes
1/2 cup lemonade

1) Crush ice in blender
2) Add remaining ingredients and blend until smooth (you can add more lemonade for a thinner consistency, though you probably wants this thick for the ice pops)

Another Mama on this site gave me a recipe for a pregnancy smoothie that has saved the day! One banana, 8 oz. milk, 2 Tbsp. peanut butter. Blend in a blender until smooth. I love it!

We also love to use frozen berries, milk and a little bit of ice cream. You could leave out the ice cream if it's for breakfast. You can also substitute the super soft (Japanese style) silken tofu for some added body and protein. You can't taste it, and if you blend it up well, you can't even tell it's there. (Make sure you blend it well - I didn't the first time, and it looked like I was drinking really soft cottage cheese! It tasted fine, but the appearance was a major turnoff.) You can dump in the contents of the tofu box, water and all, raw. (Tofu is already cooked.) You can find silken tofu on the shelves at Asian or normal grocery stores. (Asian stores will be MUCH cheaper - less than $1 per package.) It will store on the shelf for about a year.

If they aren't allergic to yogurt, just put it in!!! Smoothies are so good, they may not even notice the yogurt and they can get the benefits of it!!!

Hi K.-

You can just use fruit (bananas and strawberries), with some ice and maybe a little juice. I blend it in a blender and it tastes great. This is the perfect time (summer) because all of the fruits are very sweet.

K.,

I know you said no yogurt but the recipe I have been using for sometime doesn't taste like yogurt. My kids thought it had ice cream in it! I make this every night as a snack for the whole family. 1 cup milk, 1 cup non-fat vanilla yogurt, 1 cup frozen strawberries, 2 bananas, 2 teaspoons vanilla extract & 4 teaspoons of splenda or sugar. You can use less if you want. Whip it all together in a blender until smooth. If you want it a little thicker, add more strawberries. Of course you can use any frozend fruit you like but my husband is partial to the strawberry banana combo.

I usually use orange juice as a base for my smoothies, and just throw in whatever fruit I want in it, fresh or frozen, and ice -- it works for me! Bananas and any kind of berries are usually a good combo. Good luck, hope they like it!

Hi K.!

You can make smoothies using milk and berries.

2 C low fat milk
2 C frozen fruit (I like fresh)

Just blend together and serve. You can add sugar if it isn't sweet enough. My kids love these!

(It is part of the Flat Belly Diet too!)

Hi K.,

My kids refuse to eat fruit, so I make them drink it! I make smoothies nearly every day, it's always different. I just put in what I have. I start with liquid (apple juice, or the syrup from a tin of peaches or mixed fruit, or for a treat I buy expensive tropical fruit juice), then I add fruit. I try to add 5 kinds of fruit, but some days I only have 2 kinds. I always make extra so I can make smoothie ice lollies, they go down a treat!

Some of the fruit I use often: apple, pear, stoneless cherries (jar), peaches (tinned out of season), banana, plum, strawberries, tinned mixed fruit. For us, it's purely a fruit thing. We never add dairy unless we are making milkshake.

Have fun!

Coconut milk is a great base. You can get it in a can in the international section of your supermarket. I add a cup of frozen berries and sometimes some almond butter and a banana, and any powders like powdered greens or fiber or healthy add-ins.

K.,
you could use sherbert. do these children not like yogurt because of taste or tecture? normally when you use yogurt in smoothies you dont notice the yogurt because of everything else that gets added. if they dont liek the texture it is going to change when ither items are added and if it is the taste you can use plain yogurt and add things for flavoring but you still get the benefits of the yogurt.

Smoothies are my specialty, having lived in Hawaii for a while... The #1 key to a real smoothie is frozen bananas. It is crucial to remember to peel them before freezing! I peel and break up the bananas into thirds, then put them into a ziplock to store in the freezer. For one large smoothie, use 3 pieces (about one banana) banana, a handful or 2 of fresh or frozen fruit/berries (fresh mango or blueberries are my favorite), then pour milk or vanilla soymilk (for a sweeter taste) to cover the fruit. Then blend! Blend in bursts so the frozen banana stays at the bottom to get fully blended. No need to add ice as the frozen banana makes it thick and cold. You can thank me later! (hehe!) Another idea is instead of fruit, add 2 tablespoons of peanutbutter to the banana and milk for a high protein shake.

Hi K.,

My husband makes us yummy smoothies quite often, usually using fruit that I buy fresh and then freeze for just this reason.

He uses strawberries, blueberries, bananas (sometimes), some raspberry sorbet, and a little white grape juice. Very yummy!

The consistency seems to get weird if they sit in the fridge, though, so I'm not sure if they'll freeze well or not.

Good luck!

Hi K., Last year I was on the hunt for some good smoothie recipes. I found some great recipes on allrecipes.com. Our favorite is Milk, Ice, bananna, sometimes an egg, vanilla extract, honey. You can also buy any kind of frozen fruit. Use a little sugar instead of honey. Tastefully Simple makes an awesome Orange Dream Chiller smoothie. Just add milk and ice. The produce section in most grocery stores sells packets that you can mix with fruits and ice. Also, I use to get a smoothie package in the frozen Fruit section of Target. I am not sure if they still carry it. It contained the frozen fruit and sweetner in the bag. Hope that helps! Enjoy your summer. : )

Our favorite is strawberries, bananas, and Orange Juice (I always add a little bit of ice too if you are planning on drinking it right away) - you can also substitute the OJ for milk. Be sure to check for any allergies to foods your visitors might have.

Good luck!

we use sherbert -- melt it and they love it or whip it up with fruit or milk or what ever you choose -- my grandchildren ask for it and it is not that expensive to do that -- we just let it melt and then put it in one of our pitchers from pampered chef that has the grate on the bottom to use for mixing and add milk or put it through the blender with fruit. they love it.
