Smelly Situation

In summer I sometimes put the smelly wrappers in a plastic bag and stuck them in the freezer until it was time to put the garbage out.

I keep those items Frozen in the large freezer.
1. Use food
2. Rinse
3. Put in med size plastic storage bin
4. place in freezer in the garage

I put them in the same plastic storage bin all week and keep them in the freezer until garbage night this way they are still apart from my food (no contamination) and the scent is non existent. We have a lot of critters here we have to take extra actions.

This is simple. When I make anything chicken meats and I have left over or excess of the fat skin whatever, I put them in bags and freeze it. When trash day comes I toss it in the trash and it takes a while for it to defrost but by the time that happens it is gone! It has worked for me for many years.

Our trash was previously only collected once a week. We put the throwout stuff, like chicken carcasses, in the freezer. (in a bag) We took them out on trash day and threw them out. It was the only way, that our garage didn't stink.

I freeze all my stinky trash until trash day.

You could switch your chicken day to Fri or Sat then it would only be a few days till the trash was hauled away.

What I have done on occasion, is put the scraps into a plastic bag (or 2 or 3) tightly knotted, and stick it in the freezer until trash day.

The only issue is if I forget to take it out before the trash goes out to the street the night before pick-up.

Put the chicken bones in a ziplock bag.

If the container smells - sprinkle it with baking soda. Also ensure that the plastic bag you put it in doesn't have a hole in it and you tie it shut. We do this with our dog poop and it works.

However - what you can do is clean your trash can (I know - sounds weird) but if you clean our trash can and make sure that everything you put in it is in a bag - the smells will diminish.

We store our trash can just outside our garage door, in the back yard. Then the stink can just waft away on the breeze.

I also only have garbage once a week. Especially during the hot summer I keep a kitchen garbage bag in the freezer and add smelly stuff like chicken wrappers to it over the week. Then garbage day the whole frozen bag hits the garbage.

put the leftover stinky stuff into a plastic bag and put it in the freezer till trash day.... I guarantee that will work, provided you've got the space in the freezer. You could even put it in the fridge, it's probably easier to remember it in there... Just make sure everyone knows its trash. The stinky bacteria cant grow if you keep it at 40 degrees. That's the only real solution I can think of. You'll notice as winter comes on, your outside trash wont stink as much if it stays cool enough outside.

I had this problem years ago and to add to it animals would get in the trash when I put it out and it would be scattered all over the alley for me to pick up. So we started putting all smelly garbage in the freezer. I usually use the plastic bags that produce comes in. Sometimes I need the bigger grocery bags (Thanksgiving). I put everything in it - meat scraps, the trays that meat comes in, bones from the chicken or ribs we eat for dinner, anything that can't go down the garbage disposal. It works like a charm and the kids even know to put everything in the "bone bag". When I put the trash out, animals don't get in it because everything has to thaw and start to rot before it stinks and by then it has been picked up.

My solution is I don't put chicken in the trash...utilize your garbage disposal, if you have one. Not sure if you have bones or just chicken but if its just the meat, put it down your garbage disposal. I am a plumbers daughter...yes, its ok. In fact its best you use it rather then not. :) Takes care of that! You can put most anything down those things. Except potato skins, they tend to slip through the blades and clog up the one pipe under your sink.

I would double bag and tie tight first off. But can't you put your trash outside or outback on a porch, or side yard? Even if you live in an apartment, could you buy a little decorative trashcan with a good lid to place outside so you don't have to smell up the house?

I personally don't have freezer space for trash...so when I have lived in homes/condos/apts where the trash goes out 1xweek, I buy a thick black trashbag, place it elsewhere, like basement, laundry room, sprinkle baking soda in the bottom and always double bag the stinky stuff...

This is probably a dumb suggestion, but can you put the scraps in a plastic bag then put it in the freezer and take it out Sunday night? The chicken will only smell if it gets to room temperature, so freezing it would keep that smell off.

Also I didn't read the comments but what about a ziploc bag?

Like some of the other posts I read, I also put the chicken "remnants" into a Ziploc back or I tie them up in a grocery bag and freeze the entire thing until garbage day.

Baking Soda!!! This really works. Put some over the chicken and in the garbage can. Another trick is to put newspaper in bottom of can, Put cat litter on top of that to soak up drippings if a hole is in bag and then put baking soda on top if you want there is pet deoderizer baking soda powder that you can put in and you will have no smell.

can't you just buy a large trash can w/ lid and keep your trash outside?

I second the suggestion that you process your chicken packaging on Saturday or Sunday so you can put the trash out on Monday. Just take the chicken out of the store packaging and put it in zip locks or a covered casserole dish or bowl to put in the refrigerator or freezer until you're ready to use, and throw away the stinky stuff. I cannot stand the smell of meat packaging either. If I forget and have some the day of/after trash day, I have to take it to a dumpster before our next pick up day. We have an outside trash can too, but I tried sticking it out there and found that the smell was so strong, I could smell it when I would go out to my car and figured my neighbors probably didn't appreciate that too much. :-)

P., I always, always freeze the fat of the chicken or anything that may become stinky after several days, and then I take it out with the trash the same day the trash truck is coming.

Make chicken stock with the bones?

When you put your trash in the garage, do you put it in the trash can? I would just move the trash can to the garage, which has the lid on it, maybe through some baking soda on it or spray some febreeze or put scented dryer sheets on it. Then just roll it out on trash day.

We only have pick up once a week, and we just fill up the trash can and recycling can as we go - since we recycle too, rarely does either get too full. We just keep it on the curb.

I also freeze any of my stinky trash until trash day, especially trimmings off of meat, etc.

Gotta love Ft Worth garbage service! We started composting and that helped a little. But obviously it doesn't help with meat waste or diapers. We gave up and just moved the trash cans to the side of the house, behind the fence so it can't be seen from the street, of course. I still have to rinse and scrub it about every two weeks with it stored outside. Let me know if you find a solution! I'd love to move it back in the garage, especially since we are almost completely done with diapers! :)

I put things into used zip lock bags, that helps. Also if it is the fat or pieces that I trim off I put them in a bag and throw them in the freezer till trash day. The trick is just remembering to put them out in the trash!
Also, have you thought about adjusting your schedule? I buy bulk too, trim it, portion it into freezer bags and freeze and put this weeks portion in fridge. can you buy your bulk, and portion on Sundays? That way the stinky trash goes out with the monday trash?

Yep, freeze them. It helps especially in the summer when it gets ultra stinky. We just plain don't have room in the garage for ours so they're in the back yard concealed from the street gotta love that requirement when the carts are so stinkin' (no pun intended) huge don't ya? Our biggest stink causer right now is diapers but honestly I don't notice the stink when we're outside playing in the back yard until the lid gets open.

Put your smelly food scraps in a plastic grocery bag in the freezer until Sunday night or Monday morning. You can add to it all week with other food scraps that might start decomposing and smelling 3 days before pickup!
