Small Prenatal Pills (Easy to Swallow)?

Can anyone recommend any small prenatal pills for someone who has a hard time swallowing large pills? My sister in law is now paying $40 a month for her prenatal pills that are by prescription only because she has a hard time taking large pills. She wants a regular prenatal and a DHA pill.

Thanks!

I've taken Target's brand of prenatals - they are about $12 or 14/month. The multi is the same size as a normal women's daily vitamin (One a Day or Centrum type) and then the DHA is a bit larger but is very smooth and, at least to me, goes down easily. I take mine at night right before I go to bed and have never had an issue with them. That way my vitamins are balanced out as I take a Vitamin D supplement in the morning as well.

I am in the same boat. I was able to find some 5 yrs ago when I was pregnant w/ my first and now I can't seem to find them anywhere. I did find some gummy fruit flavored prenatal vits at Walnart last night. I was so excited when I saw them and they are really good too. I think they are pretty popular...I snatched the last bottle of them! One bottle was $11.88

She could try the banana trick with larger vitamins. Take a bite of a banana, chew it up, then pop the pill in before she swallows the banana. The pill will go down easy when she swallows.

I have a high gag reflex and pill anxiety and I can get past it by putting the pill on a spoon filled with peanut butter. I even brought my own peanut butter to the hospital for my second daughter for all the pills they would ask me to take for gas or pain. Something about simulating eating lessens my anxiety. Hope that helps.

Oh man, that brings back some nauseating memories :) I loved the NatureMade vitamins found at any store.

If hers aren't the gel tabs, she could cut them. I did it with mine. I bought a pill cutter.

I suppose you could grind them into a powder and add to a smoothie to get them down. I cant swallow horse pills either. I find it irritating that so many of the vitamins and supplements are so huge... it's pretty ridiculous.

I have a huge anxiety about swallowing any and all pills. I was actually hospitalized when a pill got stuck in my throat. When I found out I was pregnant, this was a huge concern of mine. I ended up not taking a prenatal vitamin at all. My doctor o.k'ed this. I expressed to him that I eat really, really well (a ton of fruits, vegetables, grains, good protein). I took folic acid daily (broken into 2 small pieces). I just felt I could get everything from my diet and I was good about exercise etc. I had an awesome pregnancy and delivery. I had an 8.5 lb. baby. I'm sure many might think this is a bad idea but I felt comfortable with it and my son has been in the 95th percentile for 2 years. I hope your sister in law finds success.

Chewable vitamins, I could have sworn I seen them at walmart(prenatal) but I know for sure you can get them through a prescription.

I could never keep my pills down so I went to Wal-Mart and found chew-able prenatal vitamins. I love them, it's so much easier for me to take and they never make me nauseous. I highly recommend then and a bottle only costs around $10-12 dollars.

Hi A.,

I doubt there are any small ones simply because they are supposed to have so much nutrition in them. A chewable is an option but please don't let her get anything at Walmart or the drug stores. The quality is so bad in "drug store" grade vitamins that they are actually dangerous. They create free radical activity that causes SOOO many dangerous diseases. An overabundance of antioxidants is already needed for the toxins we get from everyday living. You would need so much more than that.

I know of one that is a little smaller than most and there is also a chewable with an adult dosage that I would feel comfortable recommending. They also have a 90 day warranty on them so if she doesn't like them she simply returns them for a refund. If she's interested in looking into it, PM me and I'll forward the info.

My sister and I both had difficulty with the prenatals making us sick. We both took two flintstone chewables (not gummies) as an alternative. It was supported by our ob/gyn (each different dr.s). That might work for her but certainly check with her ob/gyn.

I have always only taken a regular multivitamin, not a special prenatal vitamin. I don't know if they're the same size or if prenatals are larger and take the DHA separately. This is my third pregnancy, and the first time I've ever had any problems taking the vitamins. I used to take them first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, but this time around I have to take them with food. If a regular, non-prescription multivitamin is still to big for her, maybe she can split the pill and take it in 2 swallows rather than 1?
