Small Impromptu Birthday?

hey mamas! well my big boy turns six today. *sniff*. this weekend we spent the night in a hotel and did a space museum and had a GREAT time. but since he's ONLY six, he is not quite getting the "that was your birthday" concept. so i want to do something small for him tonight after work just to say "happy birthday". he knows today is his birthday.

i was thinking of picking up a small birthday cake (walmart has those tiny individual sized ones that will be great for the three of us) and maybe some balloons. problem is we both work and he has school, so it will be very short and small by necessity (and obviously, due to budget, i'm not going to spend much after this past weekend.)

any brilliant ideas mamas? i think a cake (maybe some ice cream) and singing will be great for him, just wondered if anyone has any cheap/free, brilliant, *wow* ideas :) any ideas welcome, thanks!

So What Happened?

thanks mamas! well, as often happens, i make plans, and god laughs lol. it was a great night though, nonetheless. a girlfriend of mine at work spent her lunch hour shopping for a birthday present for him (she is so stinking sweet!) so after i got off work i zipped over, picked him up, and took him over to meet her to get his present. he was over the moon :) then we were bad and splurged on dinner out, and he was able to get his birthday cake and ice cream. problem solved! thanks again!

We always do some sort of party thing the weekend by their birthday. For the actual day (if it lands during the week) I do a dinner of their favorite food, a cake, balloons and I put up the Happy Birthday banner. We also do our gifts on the actual day of their birthday so that would be gift night too.

Our kids are two years and two weeks apart. A boy and girl who we combine into one party. But on there actual birthday we get two cup cakes. So on our sons 4 birthday actual day both kids have a cupcake and we put a candel in the sons cupcake and sing to him. Then a big party on one Saturday then a week or so later we do the individual cupcakes for the girl 2 birthday on the actual day and sing to her. Its just our family. They LOVE it. I think the only thing I would add was a small gift but they already get so much from Christmas and then there birthday right after! Its almost too much.

Many places offer a "freebie" on someones birthday. Our local go-cart track offers a free go-cart ride and an ice cream on your birthday. Some restaurants offer a free meal, or a free dessert. Check on-line and see if there are any borthday freebies in your area. Our birthday tradition is to go out to dinner and go for the free go-cart, because they never have their party on the actual birthday.

Cake and something VERY little to open. For children that age, cake and present = birthday. I was in Toys R Us this morning and they have their board games and other decent toys on clearance to make room for the holiday stuff. I bought my little guy "Sorry" for $10! We'll put it away until Christmas, but that's typically a $20 game!

Our parties are always on the weekends and rarely fall on the actual birthday. For the actual birthday we do dinner at home, decorate with balloons and banner, we sing happy birthday, blow out candles on small cake, followed by family game night. Our daughters love to pick out which game we will play and the birthday girl always gets to go first :)

We get the girls 2 gifts each year, 1 smaller one for during the party and their big present they open on their actual birthday.

Peace and Blessings,
T. B

Yes that's what did for my son's birthday. His birthday was on a weekday and the party was on the weekend. So it was just 3 of us on his actual birthday. I was at home, so spent the day baking a cake, tried to decorate it like his fav cartoon character(which he liked). Gave him a card that morning from mom and dad. He was too little to understand the concept of birthday cards, but I found one with his fav cartoon and had music when opened. He absolutely LOVED it :) I am sure a 6 year old would love a musical card too. You can record a song or message for him in your voice as well.
You can decorate the room a bit with a simple banner(handmade would work too) and lot of balloons. Cook his fav dinner. Have him blow six candles on the cake while singing happy birthday. Also make sure you have party hats for all three of you, and also click pictures. Also, if you can, buy new clothes and a small gift for him to open.

I think it's fine the way you're planning it! My daughter had her big party on Sunday and her actual birthday was the following Tuesday so I let her choose if she wanted to go out for dinner or out for dessert and she chose to go to Ben and Jerry's. It was perfect! And I didn't have to do any more baking or anything! ;) Also if you go to Toys R Us on their birthday they give them a crown and a free balloon, it really made my kid's day! :)
