Slightly off topic.....bathroom Renovation

Hello Ladies,

So my DH and I have finally reached a place where we can execute a long overdue bathroom renovation. We have had two previous renovations (the lower level and the kitchen) and are using the same contractor becaue he is awesome. We had our initial consultation today and now my head is swimming with possibilities. It appears, given the configuration of the rather small but important room, that the vanity top will be the focal point for the room.

My question is this: is there a superior countertop material that you would recommend. The superordinate goal is easy cleaning and easy long term maintenance. My contractor recommends granite. We used Corian in the kitchen and still love it. I know silestone is popular. It's not going to be a huge vanity top but, knowing that this will be the defining piece, I want to explore all options before making a final decision.

sorry to be so long winded but....well....like I said.....my head is swimming. :-) S.

What can I do next?

I love the shine of granite. I was told by the real estate agent that it is great for resale value and it lasts.

I bought my first pc of granite 15 yrs ago for a table top and it still looks great after all these years.

Anyway, I did my bathrooms in granite. If you do go w/ granite I want to warn you that the lighter color granite I have leaves a water mark under the soap dispenser. Go w/ a medium color or a dark color. In fact, I just put the soap dispenser under the sink to see if this water mark dries!

I'm with Jo-- if we hadn't used the marmoleum for the countertop (small counter and an upgrade from the weird rococco tile we had before) I would have used the stained concrete.

You should also check regarding corian and heat, esp.if you use curling irons.

When we get ready to do our bathroom again I we are going with cement counter tops. It is durable and I love the appearance.

We are very happy with quartz in both the kitchen and bathroom. Easy to keep clean and never needs to be sealed. Just choose a pattern that does not easily show smudges....... like a solid dark color.

We have granite in the kitchen and bathrooms and I love it. Low maintenance and it still looks good after 10 years. Lots of color and pattern choices. Find one that won't show white deposits if you have hard water. We went with a builders grade granite. Just as durable but we only had a choice of 6 or 8 colors in that price range, about half the regular $$ per foot.

We just put a black granite top in our bathroom. It looks great, but I'll be honest, it needs to be cleaned every morning and night. It shows everything. And granite gets water stains. I have granite in our other bathroom too, and to be honest, I think I'd go with another high end material that is easier. Not sure what it would be, but granite requires constant attention to make it look great. I looks terrific, but you have to work a it.

I love the easy care of Corian.
Think of what you use in the bathroom.
Soaps, tooth paste, rust stains (if you have hard water), lotions, hair dye, medicines - anything that could spill.
I like a non porous surface that resists absorbing and staining.
They have some very nice colors/patterns that resemble stone.
I do have granite in the kitchen but I really like Corian in the bathrooms.

I consider all topics to be acceptable!

& great question....our bathroom reno is on hold. Got sidetracked by a fantastic window deal for our bedroom. :)

Our bathroom plan is for either granite or quartz, both highly-patterned, low shine. Both criteria geared toward hiding stains. :)
