Sleeping with a Blanket

My son is 2 and has never liked any type of blanket or covering in his crib with him (except his small, thin blankey). We put him in his one piece PJs and turn the heat to 70 but there are still nights where i can feel him and he feels ice cold. If i put a blanket on him he will wake up within the hour and scream until he gets that thing out of the bed. He would wake up 6 times a night if i put the blanket over him 6 times a night. any advice on how to get him to sleep under a cover or should i just try again next winter??

What can I do next?

My son will not sleep with a blanket either and he's 3! I just put a onesie, socks, and a fleece pajama on him. He's plenty warm that way. :)

I don't sleep with the blanket on half the time and my son doesn't either. I am pretty sure that your baby will let you know if cold. I have to chuckle because my husband used to always cover my son up and then he'd kick the covers off and the cycle would start again.

Hang in there!

Even though you feel his skin beig ice cold, if he is not waking up, then let it be. He must be comfortable. It is ok to be a concerned Mommy. Just keep putting him in the sleepers and try covering him with his favorite blanket. It is ok if it is thin, because he has the warmth of his sleepers. Also a childs body temp rises higher than an adults does while they sleep.

Good Luck

Maybe try turning up the heat a little bit. We always have ours at at least 72.

Even though your son feels cold to your touch, I would think that if he were actually feeling cold, he would wake up and cry for you to cover him up. I would wait until next winter to try getting him used to being covered by any blankets. It is possible that inside his little body he does not feel cold like he does to you.

Little kids tell you what they need and it sounds like he does not need to be covered yet.

I agree that at this age layering is the way to go. A onesie and socks then a sleeper, and if its really cold a second sleeper in a larger size.

When my oldest son was a baby our house wasn't insulated yet and in really cold windy wintery weather I would even put mittens or socks on his hands and a hat on his head! It all helps, it made me feel better anyway!

I agree layering is a great idea. The only person it's bothering is you, though. He's not so uncomfortable that he's waking up. My daughter prefers to be cool. Yes, I consider her to be cold! You'll both sleep better if you just let him be.

In the winter, I put my boys in long-sleeve cotton pjs, then over that I put the one-piece, zip-up fleece pjs. My boys aren't really into their blankets, either. If he doesn't like his, don't fight it. But, he should be warm enough to sleep without it. (We keep our thermostat set at 66 or 67 in winter, and they never wake up because they are cold).

Hi D.,
Sounds like you have my son! You best bet..... let him be. If he was cold he would cover up. He may feel cold and believe me I know the feeling of wanting your child to be warm but he may just enjoy feeling cool. Myself I like to be under covers but my son, now 7 has always enjoyed feeling cool. even in the dead of winter he will always wants the "cold pillows" and the window cracked. Hope this helps you and if you want to talk further, message me!

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about the blanket. My daughter is pretty restless and always ends up kicking off the blanket. If I am concerned she might get too cold... I put her in a long sleeve onsie, socks and THEN the footie PJ's. She stays toasty warm and we do not keep the temp at 70. We keep it at 60 overnight.

Hi D. -

I have noticed that blankets are really useless at that age anyways! My son is 23 months and we do cover him when we put him down at night, but he moves around so much he nevers stays covered. With the tough economic times, I know turning the heat up isn't always practical, not to mention you might sweat! I would try layering him a bit more. Perhaps a long sleeve onesie and pants underneath some fleece footie pajamas (maybe get the next size up so they aren't really tight). I notice, too that their hands are often a bit cold, but the rest of their body is warm....just soemthing to keep in mind.

Good luck!

I would agree on layering and a hat too (or a hoodie over his footed pjs).
But one thing struck me as I read your post - his thin blanket - Is he attached to that specific blanket or the material it is made out of? My daughter loves her "cozies" but she doesn't care which one she has, as long as its made out of ultra cuddle fleece. So I went to the fabric store and bought a bunch of that material and made her a large blanket with it for her bed.

I had to get my daughter heavy, blanket sleepers with feet in them because she would kick off covers like this, and her room wasn't nearly as warm as your son's. She survived and is a mom with 4 kids now!

What about a cool sleepingbag that maybe he could pick out?

It's really cold in my daughters room, so I put her in a regular 2 piece pj set with socks and a footed one piece zippered fleece pj outfit over it so she has 2 layers. It's plenty to keep her warm, and it's certainly not 70 degrees in her room. Probably more like 65.
