"Sleeping" Fingers After C-section

I had my second son via c-section almost 3 weeks ago and since my surgery, my middle finger and ring finger on both hands have been "asleep". I never got any feeling back in them. I have asked my OB and my home health nurses (my incision is had fluid trapped and I now have a wound vac to help it heal faster) about this and everyone tells me that once the fluid retention goes down, the feeling will come back. Well, I have lost a lot of fluid (28 pounds) and still no feeling.

I am afraid that they hit a nerve or something when they did my spinal! Has anyone had this experience???

Thanks!

What can I do next?

J.,

As a matter of fact I did have the same thing. Almost 6 yrs ago when I had my son thru C-sect. There was not time for an epidural, so they gave me a spinal. For months I had no feeling in my pinkys on either had. It has worn off a bit, but my hands do fall "asleep" of they are bend at an angle for to long. Hope your's Fades!

I had a C-section about 9 months ago and for about a week afterward I had no feeling in my right ankle and toes. My Dr told me the same thing and it did go away. But it was gone before 3 weeks. Obviously keep a close eye on it and test areas of your fingers to see if maybe it's letting up a little bit?? I'm not Dr. but I would be concerned also. Ask your Dr about how long it should take??

I have never had a c-section, but I did have an epidural with my second son. He is five now and to this day the outside of my left thigh is "asleep". It is a constant bother. It sometimes even hurts a bit. I asked the Dr. about it, and he said it normally fades within time. Mine did not.

I didn't have quite the same result as you but I too had a C-section and experienced a scary situation. After my doctor had closed the incision, they were trying to move me from the operating table to my bed. The anesthesiologist told me to cross my arms across my chest as if I were to hug myself. I could lift my left arm but not my right-in fact, the entire right side of my body (down to my waist) was numb. He had no clue as to why that happened. I was probably numb for a good 8 hrs and I was FREAKING out. By the night, feeling was gradually coming back. The next day, everything was fine, back to normal. The only conclusion was that the anesthesia somehow made its way

Your situation is the first I've heard of, being that it's been 3 weeks and like you wrote, you've lost quite a bit of fluid already. I do hope you come through with no problems, that too lasting! I would get after the doctor and/or anesthesiologist!

I delivered my twins by C-section in July 2006 and I was quite concerned about my slightly swollen fingers (I couldn't wear my wedding rings) and lack of feeling in them as well. I asked about it at my 3 week check-up and was assured that it would go away in time. At my 6 week check-up I was still having the problem (again I was assured). Soon after that 6 week check-up I realized that my fingers were back to "normal" and I could feel them, move them easier, and wear my rings again. I forget the reason I was given for the problem but it did go away in time. I would imagine the length of time is probably slightly different for everyone.

I didn't have sleeping fingers, but I had a tingling sensation on my back for about 3 months after my 2nd c-section. I think they hit the spinal wrong on it, but my OB said just to give it time. I basically got used to the numb feeling. Sometimes even now, almost 3 years later, I still get the numbing on my back. I would say just give it some time.
