Skin Problems After Having My Baby

I am a mom of a soon to be 4 year old and an 8 week old. I had no problems with my skin with my first born, but when I was pregnant with my second, my skin became extremely oily. I thought nothing of it and just washed my skin more. A few days after having my son, my skin did a 180 and is now acting strangely. I have dry patches all over my face that flake and hurt. They become red and inflamed and no matter what I do, they just won't go away. I have just been caking on the lotion in those areas in hopes that it is just dry skin and will go away soon. I can't even wear makeup because when I put it on, you can see even more clearly these problem areas. It looks like I have something crusty on my face. There is no medical history of exzema in my family and I have never had a problem like this before. I was wondering if there are any other moms out there who have had his same problem and maybe my hormones are just still a little out of wack since having my baby. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I had the same experience as Amelia B., only my doc recommended using my dandruff shampoo, otc nizoral, on the patches before spending a fortune on any prescription meds. For me, it worked great. About a week later it cleared up. I still use it once in awhile when it flares back up, but overall it doesn't bother me anymore. Hope you find something that works for you!

Hello,
I don't know if it will help, but I just recently had a baby that I take care of with similar skin problems and the doctor prescribed Aquaphor and 1% hydrocortizone cream mixed and applied avery couple of hours. It would be a pretty inexpensive thing to try.
Also the more you wash your face the more oily it will be to over compensate for the oil loss. You should always use a moisturizer after washing your face. You might also try popping open a vitamin E pill and applying that to the patches.
Good luck, hope this helps.
Also congratulations on your new baby.
Michelle

I knew someone with almost the same problem and it was mainly on her face. She tried lots of different expensive creams from the doctor, but nothing helped that much. She finally tried Nicole Miller skin care products which cleared her face up almost immediately! Just amazing! You can only get NM from Melalueca, and the prices are great. NM products go A LONG WAY, believe me! I would definitely try them, you don't have anything to lose. HAPPY EASTER AND GOD BLESS!

Yes, I agree with Shel...Aquaphor is amazing! Our pediatrician recommended it for my son when he was a baby and he had very dry patches of skin on his arms and face during the winter time, it literally got better overnight. Just a couple applications makes a huge difference. We use it all the time now, it works great on diaper rashes too. Just remember it's a little like vaseline...a little goes a long way!

Well, you may have developed exzema even if there's no history. Or it may be in response to a drug...did you have epidural or another pain reliever that you hadn't had before...or maybe a pain reliever after birth that you've never had before? Either way, I'd definitely start using a very gentle hypoallergenic face cleanser like Cetophil and their lotion, and don't over cleanse your skin. (only once/twice a day, and with warm, not hot, water) I would really suggest seeing a dermatologist, but if you can't for whatever reason look this up on WebMD or another similar website. But it sounds to me like exzema.

ps- ok, i just read the other responses. cetophil is a lot like aquaphor. very gentle no fragrance. i agree with the vitamin e idea too. vitamin e is very very healing. when i had my nose pierced that's what they told me to put on the piercing, straight vitamin e. i would buy the capsules and just break it open. it's like a miracle drug that works for everything like neosporin. but don't put neosporin on your patches! also, i would suggest not trying to scrub or sloff of the rough spots, you might just irritate them more. maybe only very gently with a soft wash cloth once in a while...good luck!

If I were you, I'd make an appt. with a dermatologist. I myself have exzema with no family history of it, my son unfortunately has it also. Mine noticed mine the most while I was pregnant, and have a few "spots" every now and then that take a while to clear up. I read the comment about thrush also. If its something that isn't cleared up by cleaning and applying a good lotion too, then definitely seek a doctors advice, it could be something simple to clear up. Good luck and let us know what you find out.

I have eczema, but what happened to me after my second child, was not a flare up of eczema, it was something worse. And it sounds similar to what you have described.

I had thrush, on my face and arms. I was breast feeding, and my daughter developed thrush, I contacted a breast feeding consultant (instead of my doctor) because I could tell something was wrong with my breast, I had gotten the thrush on my nipples (Very Painful, like that first week of breastfeeding) She told me to continue to breastfeed, it wouldn't hurt. When my face wouldn't stop hurting, I went the doctor, the thrush had metastasized into my blood. The doctor said I should have stopped breastfeeding, we were only transferring back and forth. After five rounds of diflucan, my face cleared up but my breastfeeding days were over.

I have discovered that my daughter is VERY yeasty, for over a year, if she kissed me on my lips, my lips would break out again.

I had the same problem, went to a dermatologist, and he prescribed an antifungal facial cream. That took care of it, applying once a day, in three days. Sometimes it starts up a bit, and I use it again for a day or two. I was mad that I waited so long to do something about it!
