Sitting Up - Farmington,MI

My son has just turned 6 months and is starting to be able to sit up on his own, though he is not very steady yet. He has pretty much outgrown his infant carrier and we are getting new carseats for Christmas. My question is will he be able to sit up in those wooden high chairs at restaurants yet? Once I stop using the carrier I will need to rely on those when we go out to eat, unless I hold him the entire time! Does it make a difference if I use those cloth covers on the high chairs? (I have one already) We are having a lot of get togethers over the holidays which will be at restaurants/banquet halls and I would like to have a good idea of what works/doesn't before I get there! Thanks!

What can I do next?

I agree with what another mom said about the floppy seat. That worked wonders for my daughter. Plus I would shove several blankets around her to prop her up.

Hi, We were able to use the chairs as long as we proped her up. It worked out well in the winter because we just took our scarves and wrapped them around our daughter after she was in and she was able to sit up without any problems. Also we definately would use the cloth covers because most of the time even in really nice restaurants the high chairs didn't seem to get cleaned really well (one we even had to ask it to be cleaned first! it was gross!) and then if they are busy they just do a quick wipe and give it to the next person.
Happy Holidays, hope this helped

You could also try bring your own chair. If you want to do that, try the Chicco Hippo Hookon Chair. You can get them at Babies R Us. This way you can try it at home and see how you would prop him up in it if needed. And then you will know for sure how to do it everytime and not have to worry about what kind of highchairs they have. I used this chair for my son. I can't remember how old he was when I started using it though. It hooks right on to the table, and it is very sturdy. It folds up too so it isn't too hard to take with you. You can get disposable place mats that stick to a table so you don't have to worry about that being dirty either. Another option is to just bring your stroller in. If you have one that reclines, that would be perfect, so then he could maybe fall asleep in there too. Of course, I am sure plenty of people will want to help you hold him if need be too. Most of the time my kids don't even end up sitting on their own at gatherings because everyone wants their turn with the babies! Have fun!

My daughter was the same way at 6 months old. As long as he can sit up without your help then I was ya to the highchair. If he can't, then you can take the car seat in with you and he can sit in there. If he is not ready yet then I would suggest getting the Bumbo Baby sitter chair. They are a life saver. It's a mold to where it holds the baby up so you don't have to and you can take them to restaurants. I used mine since my daughter was 2 months old. My daughter could go in the highchair around 7 months or so. Those padded things for the hihchair are a pain in the butt. You can even get the buckle to go through the fabric. They are more work than necessary. I do love the ones where they go in the shopping cart. Well I hope I helped!!!

Try the Fisher Price Healthy Care Booster Seat. It is pretty inexpensive and comes with it's own tray. It helps them to sit up on their own better. My daughter can sit up on her own now, but we still use the Fisher Price Seat.

Hi there H.

I would be carefull using the Bumbo Baby sitter chair as another mom suggested. There was a recall on some of them http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml08/08046.html not to mention http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=7on_your_side&am.... I would say maybe you could use the woodend high chair but put one of those Shopping Cart Covers to help make it more snug and padded.

or mayne try-Chicco Caddy Hook On Chair- it's a high chair that hooks on to the table. Designed in Italy, the Caddy Hook On Chair weighs only 7 pounds and folds compactly for easy travel and storage. It is for use on tabletops up to 4 inches thick with up to a 6-inch collar. The removable, padded seat is easy to wash. Rubberized grips won't mark tables or pinch fingers. A 3-point safety harness is also included to keep baby secure during mealtimes. Recommended use: For children 6-36 months and up to 37lbs.

We had this problem too! It turned out that with the cloth cover (I got the one you can use in the cart's too...I think it's called the floppy seat cover) we could belt my son in and that helped him sit up pretty well.
