Hi everyone,
My 9mo old daughter is learning how to use a sippy cup. But she seems to spill more down the front of herself then acctually drink. Right now we are Nuby soft tip cups. My question is are there any less messy sippy cups, and easy to take apart and clean.

What can I do next?

I have a 2 1/2 year old and 9 month old. My advice is to hold off on the sippy cups. She may have an easier time and less mess for you if she's a little older and more ready. Also, I started my daughter (now 2 1/2)on the born free cups. They were a pain to use, but seemed like a good transition cup.

We LOVE the Playtex, BPA free sippy cups. They don't leak, and are very easy to clean. DD loves the characters on the cups.

I don't know why, but I have heard it is better for their mouth development to simply use a real cup. I started doing this, holding it for them at 6 months. I only use water, of course. It depends on the kid, but my oldest was soon very adept at using a regular cup, and if you always tell them to put it up after, very young children can learn to do that.

I started out with the Nuby sippy cups too. And yes, my son spilled a lot down his chin and chest. But the one thing I liked about the Nuby sippy cups was that he learned how to drink out of the sippy cups. The other cups were just too hard for him. Once he got used to it, I switched over to the Avent sippy cups. Now is is pro at them.

My babies are 18 months and still make a mess with those sippies. We got the Gerber cups that have handles and a soft spout. They work great! Playtex are good as well.

One thing to look for that we have noticed in our house is sippy cups that have adjustable flows. We have several, and some are even the Nuby brand. When you unscrew the lid there's a clear plastic thing inside the lid that makes it "spillproof" but some of them you can turn around and there's a slower spout or a larger one that lets more liquid through. It could be worth checking yours to see if they also have this feature and making sure that they are on the slower spout that lets the liquid through more slowly for smaller kids. Good luck!

I use the Playtex ones. I think they were for 12 month and older they have a hard plastic top and a valve that is removed for washing. They don't drip or spill. I hate the Nuby ones because they always spill and leak.

YES! Nuby are pretty much the messiest ones becuase if they chew on the tip they can get tons of liquid out. My favorite ones are Gerber learner cups. They have ones with handles and soft silicon tips. The valve comes out easily and we've never had trouble getting them clean.

I really liked the nuby ones too -- but had the same problem with my son. I switched over to the platex sippy cups or one with a harder spout and the spilling stopped! Good luck.

Hi R. - pretty normal for her to spill more than she drinks at this point. A bib will help with that. My son bit through the soft tops of every Nuby so those didnt last long around our house. What we have had terrific luck with is the First Years disposable cups with lids and straws. My son took to those a lot faster than he did to a sippy cup. They wash well and the straws are sturdy and they seal tightly. First years sells a sippy cup but the lids crack easily. The "Baby Einstein" straw sippy cups are good too. The valves clean easily and they dont leak so they are diaper bag safe. A speech therapist friend mentioned that sucking on a straw exercises certain facial muscles that sippies dont.

You may have to experiment with several kinds. Good luck!

R.,
It's not the cup. Our daughter was doing the same thing and I tried all sorts of cups, straws, regular cups, etc. It's a developmental thing — she's just not making the connection yet and it's ok. Our doctor said our daughter should be transitioned off a bottle and onto a sippy cup by 15 months so that was plenty of time to try things out. Keep trying and be patient — she'll get it when she's ready.

P.S. We use Born Free bottles and they have a series of interchangeable parts that can be used differently as your child grows. The training cup nipple and handle bottle seemed to be the best transition sippy cup for us. She will now drink from anything with minimal spills. I DO NOT recommend the Born Free Drinking Cup nipples (branded as 9 months and up). They have a free-flowing opening on the top and when our daughter turned her sippy cup upside down, it drained like a faucet.

We also had great results with the Camelbak water bottles. Don't ask me why but our daughter really took to them and loves to drink out of them. It taught her how to essentially drink from a straw but it has a nice silicone part on the top that she sucks from. (http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?produ...)

Just keep trying and good luck!

I really like the Think Baby Trainer Cups. My daughter loves hers. The top is soft, so it seems more like a bottle. I think it eases the transition.

put a bib on her...I really liked the nuby cups, cheap so I didn't care if we misplaced one and they have a no spill when you turn them upside down. make sure she hasn't chewed a hole in the top, my dd did that a lot. lol.
right now we use ones that have a straw but you have to suck below a line so I don't know if a 9 month old could get the hang of that one...

Ditto the Gerber. I've also tried just about every sippy on the planet, and the gerber ones are absolutely the best for not spilling. Now, I'm talking about spilling when tipped upside down or dropped. Your daughter may be just spitting it out. My youngest would do this, especially when she wasn't really thirsty anymore. For example, I would give her a cupful and she would ask for more. The second cupful, she would suck some into her mouth, then open her mouth and just let the milk or water (whatever was in the cup) just fall out of her mouth all over her clothes. My twin boys would actually spit it out forcefully. So I think it's just the age. If she's spitting, it's not going to make a difference what cup you use. If it's the cup, try the Gerber. They have them with hard spouts, and softer spouts that I think both work better than any other at keeping the liquid in the cup and off her clothes! Good luck. Oh, and by the way, I don't think she's too young to start a sippy cup. If she likes it, do it. If she fusses and fights it, then wait a bit. The poster who mentioned the regular cup is also a good idea. It's just way more involved and a lot messier for the first little bit. But if you want to, you can have her "cup trained" a lot quicker that way! Good luck.

My daughter really likes the Nuby with the straw (she's also 9 months and has been using the straw sippy for 2 months now). She had the same problem with the other kind of sippy--where she'd suck it out and then let it all run out of her mouth. With the straw one she hardly ever lets any water back out of her mouth (and it looks so cute when they drink from a straw!) Hope you find one that works for you :)

We used the Nuby cups to transition my daughter but not until she was 15 months old. Now, after trying every cup known to man, we only use the Gerber cups. They are the only ones I have found that really don't leak.

Kids who are learning to eat and drink are going to make a mess. Its a fact of life and I think its ok to clean up. Ditch the sippy cups. The sooner they learn to use a cup the better. My 2 girls 4 and 2 started at 9 months with a shot glass. Of course it was messy but we absolutely bypassed the sippy cups and went strait to regular cups after they got the hang of it. I now have a 5 month old son who will also learn to drink like his sisters.

We like the Gerber ones. My son seems to spill the least with those. The avent are really bad and so are the munchkin (although he really likes the munchkin). Is she spilling it or just spitting the water back out? My son just loves spitting the water back out. Good luck!

I will ony buy the Gerber cups they are the only ones we have ever tried that dont truly leak. (we have tried alot!) My youngest daughters favorite cup was Nuk gerber cup it has a soft spout/nipple. She never even asked for a bottle again after giving it to her. They have been more difficult to find a store that carries them and are a bit more expensive but worth it! Very good for a younger infant because they control the flow of the sippy and they are super soft, similar to a bottle nipple making them easier to transition (she was about a year old) Gerber also makes some bottle/sippy's that have interchangable spouts so you can use the bottle nipple or a sippy nipple (they were my sons favorite) thay have all then transitioned between the gerber toddler cups as well with no fuss! Got to love Gerber!
