Every kid is different. With my son we waited until he was three. With my daughter she was ready when she was two. I still keep some sippy cups for car rides, but we are slowly transitioning to water bottles with the sport caps on them. I'm with you...I'm tired of putting those things together!

I got rid of the cups when mine turned 3, but we did it in the summer. They thought they were all grown up to be able to use regular cups, and any spills just got hosed down. I got rid of all but 1 each (maybe keep 2 in your case). At first the cup could only be used at meals, then we cut breakfast, then lunch, then dinner. Then we only took them with on hot days since they would need water. After a couple of months, they were fine without them. When summer was over, they "disappeared".

The weaning idea is good or try a cool big girl light up cup/something fun for the transition. My girls are 7 and 10 and we still use covered drink glasses! They come in handy for play dates, when they are sick in bed watching TV. Funny, I kept a couple for a long time for those uses, now we use short covered coffee mugs, might try that for the transition as well.

That's about when we got rid of ours. I just pour tiny amounts in their cup to start until they are really good at drinking without a top.

We've been using the plastic restaurant cup with lids and a straw for all our kids (8, 6, & 3) the 3 year old has been adjusting well. We started her about 6 months ago. We keep a couple sippys for when the kids are sick. Just don't use the suction filters anymore.

What about the car? The living room? We use only open cups at the table, but we have various kinds of cups for the level of "damage control" needed in different situations. They also get a sippy cup in their beds when they have a sore throat.

Sippy cups are not just for babies. If you are concerned about her attachment to them, then inform her that they are only for certain times.

Toss em. We bought those plastic colored cups from IKEA - perfect kids size.
You'll have some spills, but it's a pretty quick transition.

My daughter is 3 and we started transitioning to the "big girl" cup. My daughter loved it. We have a 2 year old, so the sippy cups are still around, but it isn't a problem. We use the big cups whenever we eat. I still give her a sippy at times (ie: in the car on a long car ride, etc)We kept a rule that the cups had to stay at the table. She is funny because if she doesn't want to sit at the table and drink she will ask for her "cuppy" (sippy), but if she is at the table she will ask for a "glass" (regular cup). Also, about the time we transitioned her dad found some insulated cups at wal-mart and they have straws and a closeable top and hers has princesses on it which she loves!

My 3 year old also use IKEA cups. I limit drinking to the kitchen table. There are still occasional accidents. I usually don't fill it all the way up. If she does well, switch her.

Hi C.,
It is time to switch. I do a daycare out of my home and per the food program and my own beliefs, when my children are about 2 1/2 I start them out on a toddler cup. I bought mine from Target in my hometown, but there just plastic cups but there small. The main thing you have to do is make sure that your little one stays at the kitchen table when they drink any liquids, it is not as assessible as the sippy cup where they can walk wherever they want to. Good luck!

I do daycare and I have my kids start with regular cups when they turn 2, just start with a little and go from there, they always sit at the table and if they spill oh well, it cleans up. I never let any of the daycare kids or my own kids run around the house with a sippy cup, it could be dangerous if they fall, they always had to sit at the table with them, so then it wasn't as hard to transition to a regular cup when they turned 2. You asked if it was too late, I believe the earlier they start the easier it is. Same goes with getting rid of the pacifier, bottle and potty training. Good luck.
