I have a daughter that is 2.5 now and I remember dealing with the sippy cups. Honestly, a lot of parents have trouble with switching from bottles to cups but the sooner the better! I would just keep introducing the sippy cup to her. I would maybe start with one meal at a time and keep doing the same thing for a while. If she doesn't want to use it, it is fine. But still keep bringing it out, put water in it and maybe just let her play with it and get used to it. Eventually she will get the hang of it, it just takes time! Don't give up on it though.. I know a few moms who still have their kids on the bottles and they are over a year old! The longer you wait, the harder it is! I hope this helps.

I have worked in Pediatrics for over 15 years. My best advise to you is to continue to give it to him. When he is eating put it on his high chair, set it on the table in the living room He will eventually pick that cup up and drink from it. I promise you that.

Does it have handles? They are easier for them to hold on to. It also takes time time for them to get use to the switch. I had the same problem with my kids.

well i wouldnt push him. mine just turned one last month and he kind of uses it but spits more out. i think there are some that help make the transition from breastfeeding or formula bottles i saw at the store. my son has one with two handles on it.....he does ok but i am not that worried about it....as long as he gets a drink that's fine by me...i figure he wont be using a bottle by age 5 anyway....i get tired of trying to keep too schedules for this and that that others are doing. i just do what works for my children.... maybe you use it sometime....that may help...they like to mimic us anyway.... lee ann

Try giving the sippy cup to play with in the bathtub to get used to. Offer sippy cup first before bottle may help. They do make sippy cups that are similiar to bottles. If you haven't already tried one of those. May try offering juice or water instead of milk in cup...Hope this helps.goodluck

Both my kids were this way... they were very mad that I was even trying to take their bottles away. It really took time for us. I would try everything. I put juice in the cup, but my daughter is not really a sweets person so that did not work for her (it did work for my son though). I just kept trying and trying. I think I bought about 6 different type cups until I found one that worked for her. It had a soft top like a bottle. Once we were trained on those, then I moved to a hard top (less spills). Hang in there! He will do it!!

Boy is this a fun thing to do. My daughter is fourteen months and still has a hard time. I went through about 5 different types of cups before she took to one. Anyways, keep the cup handy at all times. Let him play with it throughout the day. Eventually he will try to drink out of it. Good luck.

I tried a million cups, and the only one that worked for me was the nuby straw cup. My baby loves it! Before I tried this, he wouldn't even look at a sippy cup. Give it a shot.

Have you considered using just a regular cup? My 16 month old drinks her water out of a cup with no lid.

My friend gave me this tip and it worked like a charm.

When you sit the baby down at the high chair, put the sippy cup on the tray with water or milk or whatever in it. Let him figure out what it is, play with it, etc. When you think he's had enough time to adjust to it (he's picking it up and actually drinking from it) then switch over to it full time.

Honestly, I was so worried when we switched over at his first birthday but he took to it without skipping a beat. We also give the 'drink' with the 'meal' too instead of having him finish the sippy first (like we did with the bottle). I thought about it and came to the conclusion that I don't drink my drink first and then eat the food at the meals, so I just started treating his meals the same way that I did mine.

My son was the same way, but I matched his stuborness and refused to give him a bottle, he could have a cup or a sippy cup. I used juices to show him that there was something "yummy" in the sippy cup. He got thirsty and within 2 days he was drinking from the sippy cut. I didn't let him get dehydrated, I would feed him water through a cup, but quickly he learned that the sippy is what he wanted. :) Best of Luck!

We had the same trouble. My son never took a bottle and didn't understand how to tip a cup and use it. Try different types. My son loved the Nubby straw-type before he learned to tip the regular sippies.

If there is a particular character, color, etc. that he likes, get a few sippy cups with that.

It might also be that he wants to use the cups you do. See how well he can do with a normal cup, or get a set of cups with lids, make sure he sees you using them, and then introduce them to him. Who knows, you may just get to skip weaning him off the sippy cup!

Hey there J.,
I had this same problem with my son. It's like he couldn't get the concept of the sippy cup. So, what I did was tried a straw in a regular cup for a couple of days. He seemed to get the hang of the straw a lot better and then when we tried the sippy cup again, he could do it!!! Hope that helps!

We took the bottle away at 1 year and had the same issue. With kids their age, they may not be interested one day (or minute) but the next time, they may be interested. I would suggest trying the cup and if he won't take it, try again tomorrow. Eventually he'll take to it, and then no more bottles! GOod luck.

You could try introducing the sippy cup FIRST thing in the morning before his bottle (when he's really thirsty HA)...

Just keep trying...he will eventually catch on! Smile!

You might need to try different styles of cups. I went through half a dozen before I found one my son would use. We ended up with the Nuby brand, they have the soft tip (more like a nipple) and they also make the sippys with a straw top!!

My daughter too had trouble going from the bottle to the sippy cup. The doctor finally said that if she gets thirsty enough she will drink. I know it sounds harsh (my eyes about bugged out of my head when he told me that -lol) but it only took about 2 1/2 days and she started taking it fine. In the mean time I was just sure to feed her food that already was high in fluid content; lots of fruits. My second one doesn't like the sippy too much but we got his a cup with a straw (by Nuby) and he loves that. Good Luck.

I began trying to wean my then 10 month old from breastfeeding and she would not take a bottle or sippy cup. I tried EVERYTHING. Finally I just started offering her a sippy cup with every meal and it took awhile but one day she just decided to drink the whole thing. Nothing I tried worked, so I think you just have to offer it to her frequently until she gives in. My son was the same way, not quite so stubborn....Good luck.

My daughter just turned 1 on the 15th and I got rid of all the bottles and all she gets is her sippy cups with milk (she still nurses in the morning and at night.)

I started her off with a sippy with a straw and she figured that out very quickly!! Lately how ever she really won't use that one anymore,( I started her on a sippy kind of early) so I have switched her to the avent cups they have a soft spout and she is using them fine also. There are so many cups out there with tops that mimick a bottle one brand that comes to mind is Nuby I used a couple of those when my daughter was 6 mos old to give her water.

I really like the Avent ones myself they have the handles on them for easy grasp and all of my children took to them very well, there are however so many different kinds my best advice would be to get a couple different ones and let him figure out what he likes. In the long run you really won't be out any money because eventually he will use all of them!!

Try using the ones that are more like a nipple instead of a spout or straw. I think they call them "transition" sippies. You can find a wide variety at Walmart.

Don't offer anything else. :) Like the other mom stated a bit ago, I'd let my little one sip from my glass of water ... or pick up the sippy cup. Now I wouldn't hold the sippy cup for him... if he wanted a drink, he'd grab it.

When the child realizes it's still a drink and he's thirsty, he'll go for it and adjust. Good luck! Your battle shouldn't be too long!!!

given no other alternative, he will drink from it. Don't offer him a bottle, breast, just a sippy cup. You may have to try several types before he finds noe he likes. Fill it with something he likes to drink. I had a hard time with my oldest and she eventually got the idea. Don't stress out, he won't go thirsty.

with my oldest it was trial and error to find one he'd use. We spent a fortune on sippy cups. With my second I just gave him the playtex sippy's that his brother had used and he was fine. With my youngest (almost 10m) she started on the soft tip Nuby sippy's at 8 months!

I couldn't get my son to use a sippy cup if it saved my life. I was told to try any cup possible...I landed on one made by Gerber that has a softer top than the starter sippy cups. The actual naem is the Gerber Spill Proof Transition Cup. It comes in 7 ounces and is $5.49 at Walgreens. I know other places carry it, but I always get mine at Walgreens. From there we moved into the Gerger soft starter and since then he can use any sippy cup. I was told that the reason they deny the cup is because for some it is so hard for them to learn to suck on a harder surface not like a bottle. Good Luck!

-you may think this sounds mean, some of my friends did- but my Pediatrician said it was just fine! That said, I got rid of the formula and bottles and started giving milk in sippy cups. If he wanted something that's what he got, there were no more bottles in sight! It took about a week before there was no fuss about it, but it worked. Also really small cups and ones with handles seemed to be what he liked best. And a valve in it to keep it from just pouring out also seems to give them more control. Hope you get your little one switched without too much struggle- it is stressful for us momma's!

We gradually introduced sippy cups to my daughter. First, we continued to give her milk in a bottle for a few months. We would give her diluted juice in a sippy cup and we would give her water in a sippy cup and we would just always have the water out for her and she'd go for it whenever she wanted it. It took her a while for her to really start liking the milk...but once she started drinking it very well, we just phased out the bottle. We only let her have the bottle at night, just before bed with milk...and then after a little while of doing this, I just put all of the bottles away and we only used sippy cups. So...to shorten my answer:
1) start with water in a sippy cup and diluted juice in a sippy cup...while continuing to give milk in a bottle
2) gradually decrease the frequency of milk in a bottle and narrow it down only to the last milk of the night
3) hide all of your bottles and just give fluids in sippy cups
Your little one will start drinking out of them
I hope this helps :-)

They sell some with a softer, flexible clear plastic spout that is more similar to a bottle nipple. Might make transition easier, my kids used them. I don't remember what brand makes them but you can find them at any store that sells good selection of kids cups. Just be careful as baby gets older and gets teeth she may chew the spout, so then you will want to get the harder kind.
